I did not like Old Forester at all. Gnarly stuff. That stuff was younger and more harsh tasting than any bourbon I'd tried. From Old Crow to Wild Turkey to Evan Williams Single Barrel(s). Yuck! Great review.
Just got a bottle of this christmas as I have been wanting to get into whiskey. I made a whiskey sour with this in it the other night which was decent but I can't get over the alcohol level in the nose and taste. What do you recommend?
@OmahaJoe12 Are you referring to the alcohol on the nose within the cocktail of when sipping neat? Use a couple splashes of water to tame the heat if you are drinking neat. It will calm some of those vapors and make it easier to sip and nose. If in the cocktail, stir the cocktail in the ice for a little to ensure proper dilution.
Thanks for taking the time to produce a well ballanced and informative review. I've drunk many single malts here in Scotland and tried this product at Christmas just for a change. It was the very pretty bottle that caught my eye tbh. Anyway I would just like to say what a wonderfully pleasant suprise. Its a fantastic smooth drink but to me it was the delicious sour end taste (very different to the scottish malts ive tried) which had me going back to the bottle time and time again. £25 here
i dont understand how butterscotch, green apple flavors can be possible in a bourbon, its put in a charred barrel and aged, and thats it, so how can this happen?
@gtb08 Great question. There are many factors that affect flavor in a whiskey - the barrel is a big one, so to is the amount of time int he barrel and of course the grain and distillation method. All of these factors impact what flavors the end whiskey has. Many times elements of fruit, sweetness, spice, and wood show themselves in varied ways. In this whiskey - that's what I'm getting. It's buttery sweetness and certainly fruity.
@jmpyle1 So far I've tried Gentleman Jack, Old Grand dad, Jim Beam Devils Cut, and Woodford, its fascinating being able to detect these flavors, which becomes easier as you go along. Back in highschool we would unknowinlgly be doing shots of high end bourbon we snuck around in waterbottles, tasted like bad medicine and rebellion back then haha. Id be mortified to see someone pour my bottle of Woodford into a waterbottle for chugging purposes now.
@AUSSIE1PRIDE I'm glad i read the reviews before commenting, I was going to bitch about that as well! Good bourbon for the price (that we have to pay).
Great comments! I, too, got butterscotch and tart apple on the nose. I thought the taste confirmed these and added cocoa. Did you not taste the cocoa? Great vids.
I believe Woodford Reserve does bottle their limited edition releases at higher proof (at least their Seasoned Oak Finish from last year was 100.4 proof). Not sure what proof their recent Maple Wood Finish is but it's one I would love to try.
I picked up a bottle of Henry Mckeena 10yr bottled in bond whiskey last week. I was expecting it to be a interesting drink at 50%, and single barrel. I have too say I am not all that impressed with it. It tastes very generic to me, there's nothing about the taste or smell that really sticks in my mind. For a price point in the upper $30 range its disappointing. Just wondering if you have tried this whiskey, or have any thoughts on the Henry Mckeena line?
@guyinhead I honestly don't have much experience with it, but I have a great friend with excellent taste in bourbon. He purchases a bottle and did not feel it was anything special. I certainly want to try it, but sounds like you and he are both of the same opinion. Thanks for the comment.
Interesting bit of information on the old forester. I had no idea it shared a mash bill with Woodford. I want to get a bottle of it now to see what kind of differences the changes is barrels and aging can make.
@guyinhead This is not uncommon with larger brands/distilleries. For example the Heaven Hill distillery has a single mash bill they use for Elijah Craig 12 and 18. The age, where it "sleeps" in the warehouse, and which warehouse it sleeps makes a huge impact on the final product. But I think there's definitely some resemblance between the two that comes through.
@joeyheadset Joey, it's just about trying and tasting a lot of bourbon. I can promise you that if you take 2-3 of your favorites and start sipping them in side by side tasting, interupted by sips of cool (not super cold) water, you'll see flavors that pop out from each. Try doing these comparisons first and then I think you'll see it becomes easier to pick core flavors up.
@jmpyle1 once I did get hints of blueberry and sandalwood from a bourbon. But not from drinking it, so much as from getting hit in the face with the bottle and then hallucinating for a minute. All in all, I'd still give that bourbon a 7.5!

I've tried many bourbons but always come back to Woodford Reserve. This stuff is the nectar of the gods.
