Anyone else notice that most well made fanbased series stopped after that so-called crappy new star trek movie came out. Strange?? I think not, the fan series most likely got a legal order to stop. Paramount didn't want the competition
This has a more authentic feel to it that Phase 2. No God awful over acting and facial expressions. Don't get me wrong Phase 2 is good but this one is more polished.
I don't know how you managed it, but the production value looks as good as it did in the 1960s. My only complaint is the gold rectangle on the uniforms that should be the starfleet insignia. Faved.
@leshpar No... If watch the original series starship had their own insignia so did the star bases. Watch "The Omega glory" episode the insignia is correct.
@jhatc1 -I'm glad you brought up the Omega Glory, because in that episode Ronald Tracey was Captain. Garrovic was captain of the U.S.S. Farragut. He died while fighting an alien cloud. There was a young lieutenant on that ship, however. His name was James T. Kirk.
I could be VERY wrong, but the impression I got from TOS was that the Andorians did not have ears like ours. That's what the antenna are for. That's why the ends are cup shaped and why they tended to tilt their heads forward when spoken to, so that they could hear you better. Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
Perhaps the thing to be most proud of the EXETER project for, is all the other fan produced trek that has followed it. The fact that so many have been willing to go to such an extent to put out these films shows that people want to see more good trek. let's hope the best trek is yet to come :)
The goal of TTI was to make the best TOS style show we could in hopes of getting a studio to take another look at retro style trek. In my mind this suceeded, since the next trek movie was a harken back to the retro trek. There were problems with TTI, most notable is that the last act has yet to be assembled and released. I also wish ithis story had more room for character development. even so, I am very pleased with what we were able to do.
My name is Joshua Johnson, I co-created STARSHIP EXTER along with my brother Jimm Johnson. All shots of the ship are original, nothing was grabbed from a TOS episode. The ship FX were done by Dennis Baily, who also penned the script which was based on a story concept by Jimm and I. Dennis was one of the writers for STNG. The sets for this episode were all built in austin texas and have nothing to do with NV or James Cawley.
@reppiksjd It's not uncommon for a starbase to be planet-side. For example in the TOS episode "Courtmartial", the Enterprise visited such a planet-side starbase.
I m sad they havent made any more , this is a masterpiece although Jimm neads to relax into his "acting". The english accent is a bit painful to those who know..
But otherwise perfect VFX great sets and costumes and shooting style and lighting WoW!
Starship Exeter is the real deal! Of all the TOS-era fan films, this one is the most true to the spirit of TOS, IMHO. The acting is okay at best, but everything else is just phenomenal. Very nice story. Interesting characters. Love the Andorian B'fuselek as Communications Officer. Also love seeing Commander Harris seated confidently in the captain's chair! Excellent visual effects. The sets, props and costumes are spot on! OOPS! Ensign Richards gives us a peek at her Starfleet panties at 3:03!
This is DA shit! It's as close to perfect as perfect can get. They're not actors, I'll give that up, but can you imagine what these people went through to produce this? Some real Star Trek fans to say the least. If they even had the million dollar budget that Next Generation had, imagine what they could do with it. Mr. Johnson is a pursuer of perfection, and he got damn close. This is the BEST recreation of TOS that I have ever seen, James Cawley be dammed.
You have got to this... the acting isn't as bad as some fan made trek. the effects are good. Well done, PLEASE keep it up... And the opening... Wonderfully done.
The sets they're using are from the Phase II productions. Paramount gave them all the blueprints for making authentic reproductions in return for a promise that they would derive no profit from the productions. As to a comparison between the two, I side with Phase II after seeing To Serve All My Days, World and Enough Time, and Blood and Fire.
@dibblerton "The sets they're using are from the Phase II productions"
....actually, no. These are sets specifically constructed for this production. I know for a fact because we recently aquired them and are restoring them to like-new condition for our production, "STARSHIP: AJAX" I am "AJAX" Properties Master and also set advisor. Mr Johnson was kind enough to allow us to pull the EXETER" set out of mothballs. WE HAVE (nor did EXETER) NOTHING to do with Mr Cawley's project.
@dibblerton "The sets they're using are from the Phase II productions"

This is great stuff, even better than Cawley's Star Trek Phase 2. I will say they certainly have their finger on the 'feel' that TOS had. Also love the Star Fleet Battles references to the U.S.S. Kongo and Captain Kosnett. In the SFB universe, he and his ship are as famous as that other guy and his ship..
@skyblazer7 Agreed. I can barely sit through 4 minutes of Phase II, mostly because of the horrible actors they've had playing Spock.
One would think that before they spend all that time and effort obtaining the original blueprints so that they can recreate all the sets in excruciating detail, they'd find somebody who can even remotely look and sound like the most iconic character of the series!
NOw that was impressive. The problem with a lot of trek fanfilms is that they usually go for the Next Gen era, but nothing they do can match the look and feel, so it just looks completely amateur. This is really good though, and I think mostly because you put it in TOS era, so anything you do looks as good as if not better, than effects from TOS. I like it. The acting is even decent. And that redshirt girl with the brunette "wet" hair is one hot bitch. Hope you'll tell her.
Really love the series! By far the best story I have seen from a fan based series. Did a great job of capturing the feel of the tos both in action and characters. Only problem is that there does not seem to be any new episodes. After vastly improving from savage empire I can't wait to see more from the Exeter!
I can't get over how much better this is than Savage Empire. This is just great work. The acting is far better than Phase II and the story is far, far better than Of Gods and Men. Farragut is good and getting better, even though they don't have Phase II's resources. Phase II reminds me of the rich kid whose dad bought him the best instruments and he only made mediocre music.
@FLAME4564 I think hollywood is run bya bunch of morons who care about a fast buck. IMO that's one of the reasons people won't spend the money to see a piece of crap movie.
viewer beware, the last bit of this isn't posted. with that said, when they finish it, this particular episode will be THE BEST original crew trek fan-film EVER. great story, great effects, great sets, everything to make a trekkie(like myself) gush. this episode is better than cauley's phase two(they actually go down to a planet). here's hoping they push forward in production and keep up the quality. phase two is the real competition to this, the rest are second rate except 'of gods and men'.
of course he's no james kirk. James Kirk is the only captain to bring his ship back to base after a successful 5 year mission with the ship intact. :)
This is very exciting to watch it's like a dream come true for TOS fans wanting more! I love Starship Exeter! Don't stop making them and thank you all for making this happen. Premium Trek product!
This is very well done. The only critique I have is that the actors don't seem to be playing their parts naturally. They seem sort of tense and robotic as though they are just simply reciting their lines.
Yes it is, but it's also a very good one. They have put so much effort into things like, editing, set building, music scoring and story writing. The actors just need to work on their character development. Which I fully believe they are capable of doing. Based on the what I have seen and read in other posts these individuals have what it takes to make a real Star Trek TV series. A lot of people watch You Tube. Some of them may be producers from Paramount, I just might be one of those people.
Don't get me wrong, as far as I'm concerned Exeter is probably the best one in production. But something that is lacking in just about every fan film is the acting... I guess part of it comes down to the "since I'm paying for the movie, I want to act in it and be the Captain" syndrome.
I've seen impressive things in fanfilms, honestly! Acting usually isn't one of them.
Need to remember though that an awful lot of the "genuine" Trek actors were also very awkward in the first season or two before they "became" the character.
Hmmm... I know what you're getting at but it's a huge exaggeration. It didn't take a season or two - more like a couple of episodes, and even then the characters were pretty well nailed down (except for Spock, but that was more to do with the network not wanting him there - until his popularity took off, of course!)
If the planet was that messed up, how would they breath clean air? Wouldn't there be toxic fumes and noxious gasses about? Also, if the planets present state made sensor readings "indeterminate" , how could they get a stable enough lock for a transporter transport? Don't you have to have rather stable data in order to transport? I know,I know.I'm knit picking. Can't help it. I'm one of those continuity/error spotters.
I think the acting is up to a decent standard and will be better than that re-booted garbage Abrams is foisting upon us in May. Exeter is Star Trek at it's best. Jimm Johnson, Dennis Bailey (Who wrote the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Tin-Man" hope that "Paramount " will recognise their work and just how popular "Starship Exeter" is with fans, therefore commission it as the next Star Trek TV Series. I hope every Star Trek fan on "You Tube" will support them!!!
any hope for a new series will rely on the success of the new film. I for one think it looks rather good- the franchise needed to be moved along to attract new viewers. The fact they managed to get stars like simon pegg involved shows the potential it has. Things like this can be entertaining yes, but they will never be able to compete with the huge budget series that everybody is used to. If i film does well (which i think it will) it will no doubt spin into a new series
Well I must say I'm a bit torn about these fan films. The effects are great... if only TOS could have had them, but I'm sorry to say the acting is terrible. Dial that in and I think you have a good thing going.
This video is the first time I've seen anything from Starship Exeter, and it's like going back to my childhood. The production values are completely spot-on, the ship shots are the most realistic I've seen since the original, and even the music has the classic period style. I can't believe it. This is stunning work.

This is great. It shows what can be done by people who actually know and like Star Trek. I hope they complete the episode.

The Johnsons rule. I just wish Paramount would hire them! This would make a killer series!

This video is the first time I've seen anything from Starship Exeter, and it's like going back to my childhood. The production values are completely spot-on, the ship shots are the most realistic I've seen since the original, and even the music has the classic period style. I can't believe it. This is stunning work.
