It should be noted that nowadays in modern world countries this condition is regognised straight away by heelprick tests and people with PKU lead very normal lives, other than having a special diet. PKU children will run alongside the average child and you would never be able to tell they're any different. With so many children with allergies and intolerences nowadays they really aren't that different.
