I am not a big pan lover but this is my all time favourite in terms of pan music......that piece of Tassa and the intro laaawwwddd have mercy.....sweeeeettttt music!!! I'm jealous of anyone who heard that live in the Savannah the night it was played.....
OMG,,,,,,MOST AMAZING PAN ARRANGEMENT I'VE EVER HEARD! Absolutely stunning! One of my favorite songs...completely renovated and brought to justice....WOW! How could this performance not have won?
I remember going almost every night to the pan yard listening to them practise the song. I remember them having trouble with timing and having to use two durm kits and hire a conductor to help. I fell in love with it. On Panaroma Finals night they mashed up the place. The judges were not ready for this tune at all. They placed fourth. In my eyes the were simply number one.
This is one of favourite Panaroma arrangements if not the best ever. I think 23/24 years ago, Trinidad and the judges then, were not ready for so much curry and tassa in a panarama tune. If my memory serves me correctly this was the first time tassa was introduced into a panorama tune so effectively and sung by a local "Serian", the Mighty Trini. This is my humble opinion.Des
Oh my goodness It's 1:37 am and I have chills just from listening to this. Orgasmic!! That's all I can say "Wow" what a throwback I was back in the savannah.
So much can be said about this arrangement...when you hear the tassa at 8:37, you figure thats the climax....then when the pans come back in at 8:45 simulating the tassa, you are sent completely over the edge, over the top, wild..genius stuff
Nostalgia! The meaning of Panorama finals back in the day was Trinidad All Stars! I could listen to this perfomance 1000 times again and still be electrified by the sound.
I remembered back in the day drewing every panorama season, I will look forward to listerning to bands like ,Trinidad all stars,Renegades, Despa's, Phase2 pan grove, Starlieft, I can go on and on. This is what makes panorama the greatest show on earth.
Steel-ban music at its very best!...Where else can you go on this planet for a better performance by any steel orchestra? That's right no where!.... this is all time classic....arrangers will study this piece of music for decades to come. Pay attention!
The greatest panorama song ever. After all these years, I remember every note of this rendition by heart. They did not win because they went pass the time limit which was 10 min.
The best performances and music seldom win in trinidad panorama....I'll name a few phaseII's Pan Risin, Birthday Party, Misbehave, Ming Yuh Business. Magic Drums, Fonclaire's Pan By Storm, Fire Down Below. All Stars' Curry Tabanca, Despers' Party Tonite,
I honestly believe that the year preceding this PhaseII was robbed and All Stars won. All Stars got the shitty end of the stick this time around........
Only one who truly appreciates pan music can understand the historical relevance of this masterpiece!!!! Love it!!! I was only 9 years old at this time!
I was in the Savannah for the entire show , up to the results announcement. I cried like a baby when this did not win , I was 19 years old. Every single time I hear it , i want them to go back in 1987 and give this band it's due WIN !!
I mostly remembered the intro( night before finals, everyone had to play solo) and the last jam before the end. My best friend never liked steelpan but he fell in love with this tune and I had to gave him the final night uniforn. Unmatched Experience!
The intro and from 8:00 on was more than enough to win. Should have been between Renegades and All Stars. I had no problem with either one winning, but for All Stars to finish 4th was a bad joke. I listen to this and Renegades "Pan in a Minor" all the time...never gets old. This is music!
Its all Leon 'Smooth' Edwards- That guy always comes up with something thats UNMATCHED;whether he wins or lose..... the guy have music and rhythm overflowing from his head. He's getting older now- a few younger ones should figure whats in his head and learn from him because the day he leaves this earth, I dont think Trinidad will see another pan arranger quite like him... Thats the Michael Jackson of pan arrangement. I wish him a long long life...that for sure.
History again! Dont wory about judges. They just were not prepared for this! But it was not new. Remember, it was All Stars who started a trend when they dropped de bombs 'Minuet in G' and 'Melody in F' when I was a little boy and won me over. [I used to play 'The Fleets In' as a kid. I am now 65 and still proud of them. Boogsie and Ray [Holman], and dem fellers are all great and have done marvellous tings on pan.. But this may still be the best performance of a calypso ever by a steelband
This is d reason I luv All Stars 2 dis very day. I ws 4yrs old wen I saw them play this 4 panorama in 1987 n it made such an impact on me, I hd 2 join the band. I'm 26yrs old now n I proud 2 say that I've played 9 panoramas so far wit d best band in the world! Long live ALL STARS!!!
That is how I still refer to them.I broke nuff biche to come into town to hear them.I was there for every rendition of this song too.I was most upset when this rendition with the mid-tassa session in the final did not win.Jit was a master with that arrangement
Dis was meh 1st yr @ panorama.....hear de awesomeness @ 0:33 & 8:40 de shudda win wit dat OMG ! ! ! sweet pan dey get teef with deh "Tassarama"....lol
Probably the greatest performance of a calypso by a steelband. They are truly a pure calypso steelband. Throughout pan history there have been five pure calypso steelbands [imo]. By that I mean a steelband built to execute calypso as calypso. Not classic calypso. They are top three!
The last 2 minutes and 41 seconds of this is the single greatest piece of music ever played at a Panorama - and I was right there in the North Stand (R.I.P) to witness it. 4th place my ass!
The best Leon Smooth Edwards arrangement of the 1980's ....and that's saying a lot because he also did Uknown Band, Woman on the bass, Heat, Rebecca, Doh back back, Suck Meh Socouyant, The Hammer, and Pan In Yuh Rookungkertungkung, and could have easily won all of these panoramas...trust me.... each and every one could have been his
i was still in primary school when i first heard this song and that made me reall fall in love with our national instrument.up to today i cant understand how they lost, i heard the winning song and all i can say is that the judges got it totally wrong,i also believe the judges did not accept change as this was not a "traditional" pan song.still hats off to all stars you were the winner that night.
This performance was placed 4th by the judges in 1987. The winning performance according to the judges was Phase 11's performance of 'This Feeling Nice'. It was awarded 14 points more than All Stars' 'Curry Tabanca'
when i hear them practising on the track final night, tears came to my eyes, music just cant be that beautiful, after i went into the grand stand to watch the performance, those 4 phase 11 women supporters danced to their music, when phase 11 played after they just stood still, after they told me all stars won, but they should have told the judges
i remember in the prelims listening to them in the north stands their performance of a song that no one considered a panorama arrangement, and after they played a dumb rock rasta put his middle finger up at them , i cussed him bad , he was a phase 11 supporter
Dis is one of Allstars best performences ever..even though i wus not born yet....jus t the harmony between the double seconds and the tenor when they play the chorus is breathtaking!!!
I am not a big pan lover but this is my all time favourite in terms of pan music......that piece of Tassa and the intro laaawwwddd have mercy.....sweeeeettttt music!!! I'm jealous of anyone who heard that live in the Savannah the night it was played.....
