  • Perfect. Beautiful rendering of my favorite Tom Waits song.

  • thank you mr. Waits for writing.....

  • In this video you can see Tori Amos reaching for the stars and falling flat on her face. Now I have to go watch the real version. Do yourself a favor and fast forward to 3:51, that's when it's over.

  • 10 years ago....wow

  • anyone who relates this song to 9/11 is a tool. This song is better than that. of course Tom Waits > Tori, but as this is a lounge song, hearing a lot of covers should be part of its appeal.

  • Very nice. But still not even so beautiful compared to Waits' voice.

  • I want so much to prefer the original but Tori Amos really did this song justice. She was certainly at the height of her craft and looking (naturally) beautiful in those days.

  • No, no the oppesit!!

  • i like it better then toms version

  • This makes up for Scarlet Johansons butchery of Tom's songs... This is what a cover should be.

  • Tom Waits compared to him this is nothing.

  • Tom waits is the man.. But this is very good... Big up Tori..

  • I lost two important people in my life this year, my grandma who have been talking care of me since I was a baby, and my junior in school whom I treated as my little brother.

I don't know if there is some power in this song that will heal me... or just the emotion Tori put into that live performance makes me feel like there are still people understand what I been going through... I don't know, I just listen and listen, when the world outside are saying "Merry X'mas"

  • I've looked for this for a while and then gave up trying to remember the song. And now that i've found it, such an awesome performance, and perfect "time." I'm not a Tori Amos fan at all I just the remember her on; waiting every night to see what Dave would say about 9/11 and she was on. Bravo!!!

  • Beautiful

  • Thank you tom waits, for your beautiful music that others can interpret with their versions equaling the beauty of the originals

  • such a lovely hug at the end

  • please tori make another CD like little earthquakes...we need some music to think about these days...

  • This could easily be the most breathtaking performance ever. All the emotions, all the passion... It makes me cry every time I watch it. Perfection.

  • the end.

  • Tom Waits doesn't have to be ashamed of this cover

  • oh my.

  • @LandoftheShanks

uh huh. hope your comment makes sense to you at least.

  • @demon658 ^zombie8484. uh huh.

  • ayer aprendí que Tori Amos tocó este cover de Tom Waits <3 and i loved it

  • You are RIGHT!!! Lovely, "just beautiful," for sure....

  • A lot of these comments may be missing the setting in which this performance occurred. this was Sept. 17th, 2001, letterman's first show after the terrorist attack. Dan Rather was first guest and he broke down in tears during the interview while commenting on the events taking place in NY. Every lyric of this song is a metaphor. Listen again for the wind making speeches and "its raining hammers its raining nails", the shadow boys are breaking all the laws. Know what thisperformance is about.

  • @JeffreyJaguar That's what makes this performance all the more haunting as well all the more beautiful.

  • @JeffreyJaguar

I will never forget 9-11 it still hurts bad, but the song was written years and years before 9-11 by Tom Waits.

  • 2:45 - 2:51 I just fell in love

  • Just an incredible cover. Tori has always been a favorite of mine and Tom Waits is a genius. What an absolutely beautiful cover. Thank for uploading it.

  • While nothing compares to an original Tom Waits version, nothing highlights what a genius, beautiful, and completely underappreciated songwriter Tom Waits is than a cover.

  • The worst kept secret in the universe; Tom Waits is a genius.

  • AMAZING.

  • darkness always finds it way out of darkness with words... not light that blinded its own soul of darkness where peace is its own rest.

and words which echo against the walls of soul

and words like guide in search of love

Tori Amos is quite correct or Tom Waits before...It is time to love...

  • The music of Tom Waits is so personal to me I'm always borderline shocked when someone else declares knowledge of it much less covers it. Tip top cover here, she brings her own style to this song while honoring the original, that is how covers should be done IMHO.

  • hot and talented girl singing tom waits, no way to go wrong

  • loved...we need try......

  • a beautiful performance of a beautiful song

  • I just love the way she speaks -- instead of sings -- the last word "time." I probably watch this video at least once a week; it's chillingly beautiful.

  • I do too. She also has a way of looking at the camera that is like no one else. I can`t describe that look but i like it.

  • 1:58 chills....

  • Great Waits cover

  • So incredibly beautiful... I've never before thought that there would actually be someone to make a Tom Waits song justice... But when Tori puts her magic on a song there's not much that can compare with it at all...

  • I get such chills hearing this...maybe b/c it was right after 9-11 it was such a sad and poignant performance from her. She and Dave were about to cry straight to commercial to compose themselves. I cry every time I see this.

  • I'm sure it was already mentioned on here, but this was Dave's first week back after the 9/11 attacks, and Tori was his first musical guest after the attacks. The song will always bring back the thickness of that month for me. I dont know about anyone else...

her performance was just beautiful and touching

  • yes, i agree!

  • I'm forgiving Letterman all his sins for that last bit ))

  • funny....... you wrote this before Dave got busted for banging his assistants so i`m wondering...... what were his sins?......... supporting Obama?

  • Yeah, I know more than the usual people [mysterious music]

    :^)

No, that was just a figure of speech ))

  • Simply beautiful. Doing great justice to one of many amazing Tom Waits songs. Not too big on Tori's cover songs, as a huge Tori and Tom fan I'm glad to see that she did this masterfully.

  • Letterman seems so protective of her.

This is my favourite version of the song -- so raw and vulnerable. She's incredible.

  • This is one brillant performance. This album was made to fullfill her her old contract and its amazing how she didnt compromise herself or the music to do it. If you havnt seen her live...its very climatic and moving. Shes the BEST!!

  • 3:09 tuh IME

    haha

  • This is so heart-rippingly good breaks me in tears every time. Tori playing Rattlesnakes on Letterman's is of the same quality.

  • Painfully beautiful.

    Born to play the piano.

  • Deeply passionate performance ... inspired by Tom's brilliant masterpiece lyrics, a modern poetry classic.

  • Really great, but I still prefer Tom Waits' original version over this one. Nonetheless, a great cover with deep passion in it

  • Whoever keeps making this song get taken down from the Letterman people, can you kindly let this one stay up? It's too amazing not to share.

  • Death is the only thruth

  • she was in ny 9/11. this is just a week later. she is dressed with american flag colors.

  • Tori does a very good job with this, unlike a lot of people who cover Tom songs. If you want to hear another great female cover of a male original, listen to Price doing "Nothing Compares" and then Sinead O'Connor's cover.

  • my birthday is on 9/11, and i cry every time, i see this beautiful video...hope Tom waits is proud over tori's version, cause is so beautiful.

  • Sweet song, sweet video.

  • "she's death. I think everybody gets to pick how they see death. So to me, she is the Grim Reaper, and I saw her. Because time is ticking-Tori."

"I thought about taking this to the organ, but I stripped it back... It's from the point of view of Death, so I felt like you need to feel like you are sitting on the piano stool. No masks, no effects, it's right here, dry, with a little compression on the vocals." Tori Amos.

  • her best cover,and a classic waits song,lovely stuff

  • nice cover... waits voice is unreachable though... ;-)

  • oh god i remember this...like everyone said she was the first musical guest . a day or so after 911 and i caught this on t.v, and cried for the whole time. f'ng gorgeous soul of a woman.

  • never used this extremelyyyyyyy beautiful Tom wait's song in a movie ????????

I'm very very very surprised !!!!!

    Peace anynone

  • This was. for me, one of the most heart-wrenchingly stunning performances EVER...

I'm sure that, for the 4mins she performed, there was an incredible sense of healing and deep sorrow combined...at that feeling stayed with me long after she finished singing...

Tori, you are a light in a dark world...

  • It was as heart wrenching then as it is now.

  • this just rips my heart out... remembering Tori made her debut on Letterman with Crucify in 1992, and then coming back with Cornflake Girl and all the fire of Pele and that performance of Spark... and then this beautiful performance just after 911 and Dave gets all choked up...

could anyone be more badass than Tori? :)

  • have to say that I am a massive TOm waits fan but this really is very beautiful, she put the hairs on the back of my neck up

  • How she underplays the vowels and makes consonants so pronounced: "This won't hurt a BiT..." WOW! +swoon+

  • I Love Tori... is amazing!!!!!

    Tank you :-)

  • I was shocked when i listend this song though it is really soft.

    Tori is an amazing girl!

  • Still great. What a wonderful song.

Watch as Dave loses it after shes done.

  • Tori Amos has been one of my favorite singer/songwriters from the moment I saw the brilliant video to her very special song "Silent All These Years". It's not often that I am riveted by a performance the way that song took hold of me. I am hoping to attend her show Tuesday night in Charlotte, NC (I live in Durham, NC). It would be my first Tori Amos concert.

  • It's a beautiful song and Tori does an amazing job

  • Some people have no idea how historically important this performance is! (Present company excepted) I went online to get tickets to see her in LA, and I was scared to fly. She made me feel ashamed of myself, and I know I would have regretted missing her concert!

Took my high school sweetheart. Best thing I could have done. Tori was born to be a healer of emotional wounds.

  • i saw this when it aired; sometime after 9/11 and i was at my friend's house TOTALLY TRYING NOT TO CRY in front of them. i was interpreting all the lyrics to relate to 9/11 and i was losing my crap. Tori is powerful stuff.

  • I know some may disagree, but from a woman's perspective, I say she does this song better than he does. Thank you for adding it.

  • Very nice.

  • I got told about this because i'm a tom waits fan... gotta say bravo. If only i had the vocabulary to praise as much as i wanted :( ah well...BRAVO.

  • she performed on the first david letterman right after david letterman. this always makes me smile just a little bit.

  • This is a great song from "StrangeLittleGirls" but I have to say I'm more than impressed with her version of "Real Men" (her version is exceptionally brilliant).

  • Tori Amos is probably the most talented singer/songwriter today. Such an amazing talent, writer & person. I love her music.

  • While I agree about her being a very talented singer and songwriter, this is a cover of a Tom Waits song.

  • Thanks for loading this up

  • thank you
