In this video you can see Tori Amos reaching for the stars and falling flat on her face. Now I have to go watch the real version. Do yourself a favor and fast forward to 3:51, that's when it's over.

anyone who relates this song to 9/11 is a tool. This song is better than that. of course Tom Waits > Tori, but as this is a lounge song, hearing a lot of covers should be part of its appeal.
I want so much to prefer the original but Tori Amos really did this song justice. She was certainly at the height of her craft and looking (naturally) beautiful in those days.
I lost two important people in my life this year, my grandma who have been talking care of me since I was a baby, and my junior in school whom I treated as my little brother.
I don't know if there is some power in this song that will heal me... or just the emotion Tori put into that live performance makes me feel like there are still people understand what I been going through... I don't know, I just listen and listen, when the world outside are saying "Merry X'mas"
I've looked for this for a while and then gave up trying to remember the song. And now that i've found it, such an awesome performance, and perfect "time." I'm not a Tori Amos fan at all I just remember her on; always waiting every night to see what Dave would say about 9/11 and she was on a week later. Bravo!!!

how many people cared about new york or the twin towers before it was attacked out of curiosity? how many people mentioned haiti in every day conversations before the natural disaster struck? same with japan, louisiana etc.? I wonder this every time I see all the comments from everyone about 9-11 and various other occurences throughout the years.
And I do not care for her version of this song at all. It sounds like any other woman could sing it. Sorry, not a bleeding heart.
A lot of these comments may be missing the setting in which this performance occurred. this was Sept. 17th, 2001, letterman's first show after the terrorist attack. Dan Rather was first guest and he broke down in tears during the interview while commenting on the events taking place in NY. Every lyric of this song is a metaphor. Listen again for the wind making speeches and "its raining hammers its raining nails", the shadow boys are breaking all the laws. Know what thisperformance is about.
@JoeyNavinski "I will never forget 9-11 it still hurts bad, but the song was written years and years before 9-11 by Tom Waits."

We all realize that about this song and Tom Waits is one of my favorite songwriters. But as Tori performed this song and we received it, the meaning became different and perfectly expressed.
Just an incredible cover. Tori has always been a favorite of mine and Tom Waits is a genius. What an absolutely beautiful cover. Thank for uploading it.
While nothing compares to an original Tom Waits version, nothing highlights what a genius, beautiful, and completely underappreciated songwriter Tom Waits is than a cover.
The music of Tom Waits is so personal to me I'm always borderline shocked when someone else declares knowledge of it much less covers it. Tip top cover here, she brings her own style to this song while honoring the original, that is how covers should be done IMHO.
I just love the way she speaks -- instead of sings -- the last word "time." I probably watch this video at least once a week; it's chillingly beautiful.
So incredibly beautiful... I've never before thought that there would actually be someone to make a Tom Waits song justice... But when Tori puts her magic on a song there's not much that can compare with it at all...
I get such chills hearing this...maybe b/c it was right after 9-11 it was such a sad and poignant performance from her. She and Dave were about to cry straight to commercial to compose themselves. I cry every time I see this.
I'm sure it was already mentioned on here, but this was Dave's first week back after the 9/11 attacks, and Tori was his first musical guest after the attacks. The song will always bring back the thickness of that month for me. I dont know about anyone else...
Simply beautiful. Doing great justice to one of many amazing Tom Waits songs. Not too big on Tori's cover songs, as a huge Tori and Tom fan I'm glad to see that she did this masterfully.
This is one brillant performance. This album was made to fullfill her her old contract and its amazing how she didnt compromise herself or the music to do it. If you havnt seen her live...its very climatic and moving. Shes the BEST!!
Tori does a very good job with this, unlike a lot of people who cover Tom songs. If you want to hear another great female cover of a male original, listen to Price doing "Nothing Compares" and then Sinead O'Connor's cover.
"she's death. I think everybody gets to pick how they see death. So to me, she is the Grim Reaper, and I saw her. Because time is ticking-Tori."
"I thought about taking this to the organ, but I stripped it back... It's from the point of view of Death, so I felt like you need to feel like you are sitting on the piano stool. No masks, no effects, it's right here, dry, with a little compression on the vocals." Tori Amos.
oh god i remember this...like everyone said she was the first musical guest . a day or so after 911 and i caught this on t.v, and cried for the whole time. f'ng gorgeous soul of a woman.
This was. for me, one of the most heart-wrenchingly stunning performances EVER...
I'm sure that, for the 4mins she performed, there was an incredible sense of healing and deep sorrow combined...at that feeling stayed with me long after she finished singing...
this just rips my heart out... remembering Tori made her debut on Letterman with Crucify in 1992, and then coming back with Cornflake Girl and all the fire of Pele and that performance of Spark... and then this beautiful performance just after 911 and Dave gets all choked up...
Tori Amos has been one of my favorite singer/songwriters from the moment I saw the brilliant video to her very special song "Silent All These Years". It's not often that I am riveted by a performance the way that song took hold of me. I am hoping to attend her show Tuesday night in Charlotte, NC (I live in Durham, NC). It would be my first Tori Amos concert.
Some people have no idea how historically important this performance is! (Present company excepted) I went online to get tickets to see her in LA, and I was scared to fly. She made me feel ashamed of myself, and I know I would have regretted missing her concert!
Took my high school sweetheart. Best thing I could have done. Tori was born to be a healer of emotional wounds.
i saw this when it aired; sometime after 9/11 and i was at my friend's house TOTALLY TRYING NOT TO CRY in front of them. i was interpreting all the lyrics to relate to 9/11 and i was losing my crap. Tori is powerful stuff.
This is a great song from "StrangeLittleGirls" but I have to say I'm more than impressed with her version of "Real Men" (her version is exceptionally brilliant).
Perfect. Beautiful rendering of my favorite Tom Waits song.
