@bette1908 It chimes everyday at every hour night and day and every 15 minites after the hour, but only a little. the mains ones every hour (like this).
Big ben is one of the great landmarks of London. I was born and raised in London and have lived most of my life in the city. At one time I had a flat that was within hearing distant of Big Ben. I remember at night time when I used to go to bed I could hear the chimes in the distance. If you ever come to London - enjoy yourself and have a peaceful time. Bearhug. Tx
"Now Big Ben is sometimes used, strictly-speaking incorrectly, to refer to the clock, the tower and the bell collectively, although the nickname is not universally accepted as referring to the clock and tower." It's pretty much a synecdoche.
I may have been half-right about the lights; it seems that in recent years the building's external illumination has been turned off at midnight to conserve energy. I am not able to confirm this personally, but it makes sense with regards to this video. (For some reason, I cannot include the link, but you can find the page if you Google "Floodlighting at the Palace of Westminster".)
Our school has a clock tower (well, a replaced clock tower...), and it goes every hour, but it's nothing like this. It used to have a real bell, but now it's just a recording.
Same here...well..i live two streets away from a catholic school church and sometimes if you listen closely you can hear bells (sounds more like the Westerkerk though)
Well, as far as I remember, there's little or no houses in the area, regular commuters are used to it and tourists love it, so it doesn''t really disturb many people :-)
I wonder why the lights would be turned off; they're supposed to stay on until sunrise.
(Also, as other people have observed, the tower's just called "Clock Tower". There actually is a St Stephen's Tower, on the other side of Westminster Hall; it's where the visitors' entrance to the Palace is.)
You find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.
@PicandPiku= And then. \Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan fall of and land safely in the Queen's coach. She's not amused. And Clark Griswold drives by for the millionth time, laughing like a madman, sayng. "Look kids, there's Big Ben, Parliament." I love that bell.
I think the tower's just called the Clock Tower, not St. Stephens. Nevertheless it still sounds as magnificently imperial as it must have when there was an Empire.
I live 130 miles North of London in Birmingham. And I love making trips down to London as it's such a brilliant place, especially Big Ben, it's so beautiful. I'd love to be there on the turn of New Year. I bet thats good.

@MrJoshbumstead Incorrect. Big Ben is the bell, but it also refers to the clocktower itself.

My community has a clock at the
courthouse with a chime. But it
doesn't even compare to Big Ben"s
gigantic chime.

The clock tower's official name is St Stephen's Tower. Big Ben is the Great Bell.
The other large square tower at the other end of the palace is called Victoria Tower..
