  • This is brilliant. I watched a documentary on Jake many years ago and they said that other musicians (trained musicians I guess) would watch him play the guitar in awe because they had never seen or heard many of the chords that he played.

  • @danbs07 Hi Dan ... I think I saw that doc, and yes guitarists were queueing up to comment on his influential guitar style, and rightly so. I was in my young teens when he used to be on That's Life of a Sunday night, and I'd always be spellbound by his playing.

  • Songs?

    I think...

Salvation Army Girl? Sister J? Leopold Allcock? Lah de dah?

People forget that JT was a phenomenal guitarist.

  • @chap666ish Thanks for watching and commenting - I don't get too many views on this vid so I'm chuffed when I get a comment from another Jake fan. The four here are The Black Swan, Sister J, Isobel Makes Love Upon National Monuments and La-Di-Dah. He really was a fine player, self taught but he had all the chops and a great ear for harmony. Must definitely do another one of these medleys...

  • @ironmonger100 If you do another medley can I put in a plea for Go Little Swale? Judging by the way you play I take it you've not just picked up the guitar recently then. Do you play for a living?

  • @chap666ish Hi, I teach mainly, but I do gig fairly extensively, main gig is in a Country Band of all things, but some solo engagements too ... Will have a listen to go Little Swale and see if I think it'll work ...

  • great guitar playing and you really bring out how beautiful Jake's chord structures are, irrespective of his lyrical brilliance. Thanks for posting.

  • @tobydarling Thanks so much, appreciate that very much. That was what I was trying to achieve - to show that Jake most certainly knew his onions when it came to composing music as well as lyrics.

  • This is a tops preformance mate, I recently started playing guitar with the firm intent to get good enough to play the brigadier by far my favorate song. Your my new favorate youtuber =D

  • @pedipanda Hi Nathan, really appreciate the comment, thanks - and it's great to hear from a Jake fan. To be honest, The Brigadier - in my humble opinion - hasn't got an interesting enough melody to work as an instrumental. The songs charm is those lyrics and the way Jake delivers them. But I'll try and do another Jake medley over the summer. Cheers.

  • @ironmonger100 I whole heartedly agree with you on that its the lyrics that make the song, as i say im trying to learn it and i found Sister Josephine far easyer after watching you play it =D

  • Loved it. Quite superb!

  • Glad you approve :-)

  • @ironmonger100

I sing a lot of Jake's stuff myself, but in his style of playing. You play the guitar so very well. Is there anywhere I can actually find the music to have a shot at playing the tune like you?. Mind you my playing will need to improve very dramatically, but I'd like to try.

  • that was just fantastic.... just fantastic ....i really , really enjoyed your version of these great jake thackray classsics please do some more.....

  • Wow, thanks for taking the time to listen, and to comment. R.I.P. Jake! Glad you enjoyed my tribute :-)

  • You certainly succeed in illustrating the musical qualities of Jake's work. The Black Swan is particulary convincing. Any chance of adding these to the arrangements you are selling?

  • Thankyou:-) ...well, I can transcribe Black Swan if you'd like it .. I'll let you know when I've done it, it won't be for a week or two, I've got a couple of others to do before then. Cheers.

  • That would be great - many thanks.

  • beautiful playing. They look really tricky to play. Youdidn't do my favourite "on again" though :-)

  • Thanks! It's my favourite too but there are just too many quavers in for me to get my fingers around!!!! Cheers from Kent :-)

  • Does anyone know where you can still get sheet music dor Jake Thackeray's musinc- with or without words?

    Stephen Old

  • Hi Stephen thanks for listening! I used to be a member of a Yahoo forum on Jake's work - I know it still exists as I get email updates from time to time. Anyway, some of the people on there used to exchange chords/tabs etc, so I guess that'd be a start. Cheers

  • Thanks a lot Ironmonger 100, I have got the music to some of Jake's songs and will investigate the Yahoo forum. I saw Jake play live on at least two occasions and have a couple of LP's/CD's of his. Thanks for revivin gmy interest in him!

  • wow, that was great, would love to hear you sing the words as well, lol!

  • Me sing? I don't think so lol .... actually, thepoint of this was hopefully to highlight what fine tunes Jake wrote, he wasn't just a brilliant lyricist. Thanks for watching :-)

  • just fine listening to you playing that lovely instrument,an absolute joy.

  • Maestro

  • Really enjoyed this Shaun, so hopefully spread the word a little further still by blogging it at the knackered hack.

    Cheers, Tim

  • Thanks a lot Tim ... had to google the knackered hack as I haven't come across it before :-)) best wishes, Shaun

  • Fantastic! Thanks!

  • Hey Julie, thanks for the lovely comment - I think you must be the only viewer from outside England to look at a jake thackray posting :-)) .. best wishes.

  • Thanks, Shaun. My friend, Paul (Gangly1), introduced me to Jake T, a brilliant composer, musician, and lyricist.

    Best regards,

    Julie

  • Lovely playing Shaun.

  • A lovely sound you've created. Thanks

  • Lovely sound here. Thanks.

  • A wonderful tribute to one of my unsung heroes!!

    Cheers,

    Paul

  • hi there , beautifully played , jake wrote some superb songs and played, to be fair not as good as you but to play how he did and sing was so under estimated ,, i had the great fortune of being his support act back in the eighties and was just astounded at his ability , thankyou for your portayal

  • Super performance and arrangements which highlight how beautiful some of Jake's melodies were - something often overlooked.

  • Thanks - that's the reason I posted this, they are such great melodies.

  • Well played. It's easy to forget the music, as Jake's words were so exquisite. How could he have died a broken bankrupt in Monmouth? He was an utter genius and should be as high in this country's pantheon as his hero George Brassens is in France.

  • Thanks for that. It's an absolute mystery to me too. The word Genius doesn't even come close.

  • Hi Ironmonger 100

Thanks for your email. Yes I would b einterested in your transcription of Black Swan. Tell me what to do next!

  • I think you always sound as if there were two people playing or as if you had a guitar with twelve strings. Very pleasant to hear, as usual. Thank you. V. from France

  • Great playing and arrangements, Shaun, as usual. 5:32 with no mistakes! I didn't know Jake's music, but I'll have to famiiarize myself with it after this fantastic video. Cheers, my friend!

  • Amazing guitar music played effortlessly.

    Nicely done Shaun.
