You're trying to hard to find reasons to not give him his props. Sometimes you just need to sit back and enjoy artists for who they are and not how you want them to be. While it is your opinion what you prefer to see in him, he's his own artist with his own ideas on how he wants his music to sound. So comparing him to other artist is simply stupid. And there's nothing wrong with coffee house level entertainment, that's where Priscilla Ahn resided in and that's where honest music remains.
I listened to both songs (both in clips of live performances), and Dance With Me was a good, solid song. But Shots and Beers seemed much like this song, Dreams. I think he's better off if he just sticks to working on his singing. Whenever he starts rapping, he dates himself, and even worse, he -- like most guys into rock -- just can't rap well. Rock guys who can rap can only appeal to those who don't know rap. I've heard the best in rap, and anyone else just doesn't compare.
i understand what you're saying. but you boil it down to two things: categorizing and technicality. To place his music into a stripped-down rock/rap category is mistaken to begin with. and second, music is always much more than just technicality. the uniqueness and talent of each musician speaks so much deeper as well. This is of course not to say that you have to like it, and it's cool that you are a dissenting voice... but i just feel like it's much more than the framing of your critiques.
Perhaps I wasn't as clear as I could have been. I wasn't trying to place his music into any category. I was responding to the others who said he was delivering/creating a whole new genre of music, which is a fanatic statement and far from the truth. His music really isn't that different from what's been done before. I know music -- I give everything a chance, regardless of continent, language and decade. He has talent, yes, but people are really overstating his skills and "originality."
When Geunjin opens his mouth to try to rap (even if it's done in a more mellow style than true rappers), he's tapping into an old formula. He more resembles the rock guys who can't rap their way out of a paper bag and promptly brings down the quality of his music. I heard his "Dance With Me" song, and without any attempts to rap, I found it to be one of his better tunes. I'm aware that music is more than just technical skill. Emotion and charisma are vital. But they can only cover so much.
you're really on a mission to get your point across aren't you? that's cool tho... i suppose it's a good thing that it draws out opinions. but i wonder for such an opinionated person... maybe you should let us hear some of the music you've made. at least then, we can all try and understand the tone in which you're writing. seems like most just wanna enjoy the music and let it be.
Using Spoken Word allows Geunjin to express himself more and Rap is a form of lyrical poetry. It doesn't bring down the quality especially when people respond to it. Instead of just focusing on the "technical skill" you should pay more attention to his lyrics and the soul which is more important than "technical skill" and having an elitist bias towards a genre of music. Besides, he already has the ability and natural talent, he's just not a robot who only cares about "technical skill."
I'm well aware there's more to music than technical skill, but technical skill and artistry is still a part of the mix. I guess my point is, there are people who are better at spoken word than Geunjin. He's OK, but, at this point, he's strictly coffehouse level entertainment. A lot of the artists I listen to aren't the best technically sound singers (Michael Rose, Peter Tosh, etc.) but they do have a musical or lyrical artistry -- and passion/charisma -- and they've had it for a long time. MORE
(CONTINUED) And I understand Geunjin's an upstart, and someone has to start somewhere, and I do have a small soft spot in my heart for upstart musicians. This whole discussion started with my response to people saying that G was starting a whole new genre. That's overstating reality. He's not doing something that others haven't done. And that's the statement that got this whole discussion rolling. What is your response to my opinion on that issue?
You may be right. But who is better when it comes to music is rather subject than objective. I am way more interested in these kinds of free style than those teen poopper some thing called j** brothers, or gaga whatever the fuck they call them. As a minority, He already tried his best. His music is truly comes from his heart and soul. that is the beauty!
@sonofmanchu Oh, I agree, that his music is better than that of the Jonas Bros, or Lady Gaga, and other pop garbage, and it's not the worst "rapping" I've heard by a rock/pop guy. But most rock guys, such as Mike Shinoda, can't rap their way out of a paper bag. Geunjin is better than him. I am a rap fan, and most rock/rap mixes are badly dated. Anyway, listening to this song again, the rapping here is actually better than the singing.
Whoa.. this is really great music.. it's not rap it's not pop it's.. like someone said.. a whole new genre.. it's very addiciting :) and Geunjin has a very nice strong voice :) I'll start looking him up
It's not a bad song, but I wouldn't exactly say it's a "whole new genre." It's just a few steps to the side.
It's just a slightly stripped down version of the rap-rock that's been coming out for many years now.
I'd rather he didn't try to rap. The music's solid, but once he starts trying to rap, it diminishes it because, like most artists into rock or other non-rap styles, he can't rap well. Catchy? Yes. Good, no. And he needs to learn how to sing better -- maybe that's why he's rapping.
hehe im not very..."picky" (for the lack of a better word) for music.. i still have it playing now :P i think i liked umm his song.. Shots and Beer better just looking at the musical aspect of it.. but shrugs... the song is rather soothing :P but maybe it's cause i have a final at 8am tomorrow :P
Yeah, I guess I was being rather picky. Guess I'm just in a cranky mood! It's a catchy, light song. Not a song to be taken seriously, but I could see this being something fun, snappy to hear while out on the town, or listening to someone playing at the local bar or coffeehouse. And I'm all for Asian/Asian-Americans artists making it. Despite my screen name, I'm Asian-Am. Anyway....
You are aware that there's such a thing as critiquing, as well as such a thing as one's own personal tastes? But since you seem to not believe in judging anything, I guess that means you have no standards. Do you like everything you hear? Do you like every movie you see? And I take it that you don't judge anyone, right? Please prove that to me. Just because I don't particularly like Geunjin's style doesn't mean you can't like it. We don't have to agree. You're judging me, if you weren't aware.

Dreams came rushing like the tears of hope
If I had one thing that can somehow come true
