  • The great Mr. Fairbanks proved he was a feeble-minded old fool by not knowing who the guest was with all those clues handed to him. And little did Charlton know he'd lose his mind and be a racist NRA advocate writing hate-filled stuff like "The White Man's Manifesto".

  • Geez, how obvious. I've seen Bennett hit it right away with nothing more then a hair color and pinup.

  • Wonder why he was the only Mystery Guest who made no attempt to disguise his voice. Astonishing!

  • I deeply wish some of these actors would've been able to be on Inside the Actor's Studio.

  • No he didn't more-on

  • I wonder if he was packing his gun at the time of this show

  • WOW!!! What a wonderful video of Mr. Heston! Thanks soooooooooo much for sharing this 'special' find with all of us!

  • "...from my cold, dead hands."

  • I always admired Charlton Heston for the way he took on contraversial issues (I didn't always agree with him), and that he could poke fun at himself.

  • How could they miss that voice....he didn't do much of a job disguising his voice. And when he answered he was in the 10 commandments you would have would have thought that Dougl Fairbanks would have nailed it right away.

  • What a hunk of a man and a humanitarian

  • Rob Pattinson and all other crap aside, one of the sexiest things you can see is Charlton playing a galley slave in "Ben Hur."

  • how did they not get it as soon as he spoke!

  • @IluvKenji They did, of course, he's the only Mystery Guest who made no attempt to disguise his voice. Whether he'd never seen the show and no one thought to explain that part to him or what, we can only speculate. Often they'd guess the guest but play along for a while so the audience could watch the show rather than ending it immediately.

  • That's the dude from "Guns & Moses"!

  • His voice is even deeper than James Earl Jones' one...

  • What a lovely signature.

  • He is so handsome!

  • Gotta Love that Heston

  • did you play moeses

  • I would have gotten his voice right off the bat. He has one of the most amazing voices of all time.

  • @rocknrollfanatic96 This is from 1956 when he was was not all that well known (before Touch of Evil and Ben Hur). Also before movies were watched many times on late night TV.

  • How refreshing......Charlton Heston before he married the NRA!!

  • charlton's smile is gorgeousss. and i love his laugh at 3:34 <3

  • ahhhh i love this show. we need one today. oh wait, the celebrities aren't that interesting today so it probably wouldn't work.

  • "Oh, he's a deep one!" XD I don't get why he's not disguising his voice, but okay!

  • I love this man, and I adore his signature! I wish I was alive when such great actors were still making pictures, there's so many great guests on this show!!

  • Soylent Green, The Omega Man, Planet of the Apes, Ben-Hur, and above all, Moses from The Ten Commandments with Yul Brenner. But what I loved him for the most was his verbatim reading of lewd, violent, & disgusting rap lyrics to a stunned Warner Bros shareholders meeting in '92. Great man.

  • Clancy Brown inherited that voice, lol

  • big signature, lol

  • My husband is a member of the NRA and we believe in the "Bill of Rights" including the 2nd ammendment and the 1st ammendment too! We are not extremeists, thank you!

  • @leahblashful

There are extremist and moderates in every organization. I personally believe in gun control, but everyone can believe in whatever they want.

  • @guanaesantonio

Well said & well put! Extremism can be found anywhere & everywhere. Just as moderates can. I didn't share all of the late great Mr Heston's views, but I GREATLY respected him as an actor, writer, family man, WWII vet & patriotic citizen. Back in the 70's he sent me an autographed photo after I mailed him a fan letter (a publicity head shot from his latest flick at the time: "Soylent Green" ). Thanks for your thoughtful & insightful comment! :-)

  • @JubalCalif

Thank you. I wish I was alive when these great legends of acting were.

  • @guanaesantonio

I second that emotion! I was alive when some of 'em were around but in the 60's I was a kid & in the 70's a teen. It wasn't until I grew up & matured that I began to appreciate their many gifts and talents. THANKS for your comment! :-)

  • Being NRA president, with their totally extremest viewpoints is nothing to commend him for.

  • Charlton Heston - A great actor and an even greater American. Contrast that against smug, elitist, self-centered, egotistical jerks, like Tom Cruise, George Clooney, Sean Penn, and Tim Robbins.

  • THE ULTIMATE---NRA president, civil rights activist.Always followed his own beliefs..

  • Kudos for Charlton! I had SUCH a crush on him in Ben Hur, 10 Commandments, Agony& Ecstasy, etc. and I still do!

  • Arlene Francis has the hots for Heston!

  • MOSES!

  • His Voice was TOTALLY obvious from the beginning. Either he wasn't that famous at that point (DOUBFULT) or they had to drag it out, MORE likely than not.

  • @Amberszone They probably think he's putting on that voice.

  • Heston isn't very good at disguising his voice. I wonder why they can't recognize it.

  • That woman was SO RIGHT. Charlton's voice is AMAZING. It just BOOMS naturally. Can you imagine him as a father?

    GO TO BED.

    shiiiiiiiiit son.

  • FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS!!!

  • Soylent Green !!- YAY!!!!

  • J'AIME PERTICULIEREMENT CHARLTON HESTON ET SUIS HEUREUSE D'AVOIR VU CETTE EMISSION.

  • Douglas Fairbank Jr. is hot too. Wow. I love these old stars. They knew how to make a presence.

  • he's not even trying to disguise his voice - i would have known it and i'm not even close to that generation.

  • He was a great looking guy as well as a fine actor!

  • 3 people don't recognize one of the greatest actors (and voices) there's ever been.

  • I would rather watch a film with Charlton Heston than any film with Matt Damon or Gerard Butler any day. :)

  • Kind of reminds me of Schwarzenegger, but only physically. Charlton was a true gentleman and a fantastic actor. May he rest in peace.

  • Another favourite - Ben Hur, one of the first films I ever saw

  • Another favourite

  • look at those eyebrows, he looks like a moden caveman, I luv him though :)

  • Notice hwo old Chuck looks a little bit like Arnold Schwarzenegger here? ;)

  • @KingCharltonHeston I always thought Schwarzenegger looked like Heston on steroids.

  • A man's man.

  • one of the things i loved about charlton heston was his rich voice.

  • How could they NOT guess sooner who he was? Heston had such a distinctive voice that I figured they'd guess the first time he spoke up.

  • Douglas Fairbanks Jr. had the answer handed to him by Arlene, but let it slip by.

  • @ParkerAllen2 @ParkerAllen2 It slipped away because Fairbanks thought of another actor who also stars in "The Ten Commandments" and who also has quite a deep voice, namely Yul Brynner. This is why Fairbanks asked if he had starred in a hugely successful stage show which was turned into a film this year; he was referring to "The King and I", turned into a film released the same year as "The Ten Commandments". :)

  • @filmidioten I bet you're right. Thanks for the info. Sometimes it seems to me that the mystery guest's voice is so obvious that it's hard to believe they don't pick up on it right away. To me Heston's voice sounds barely disguised, but I'm sure it was a lot less obvious with a mask on.

  • @ParkerAllen2 But don't get me wrong, I still think Heston could have done more to disguise his voice, it IS one of the most recognizable in movies :)

  • Charlton Heston was totaly better than Gregory Peck was

  • @92af that's your opinion and you're entitled to your opinion....but not everyone will agree with you that charlton heston was a better actor than gregory peck.

  • @cafra1707 I would say that Peck and Heston were pretty equal. But that's just my opinion.

  • @Tater1951 They were both awesome. Nuff said.

  • @92af UH, no he wasn't TOTALLY better

  • Great actor, devoted husband and father, American patriot.

  • When you put "What's My Line" in YouTube's search engine & the clips pop up, it's absolutely astounding how many true entertainment legends appeared on this show. Every single one of them is today regarded as an American icon (I was going to say "superstar", but they are/were much more than that). We'll never see that again--most appeared to promote their current works via TV, the best form of publicity at the time. Thank God for these clips, & thanks to all who have posted them for us to enjoy.

  • All these folks had good penmanship and MANNERS. What a pleasure 2 C.

  • I wonder if they saved that blackboard or foolishly erased it for every show? A true class act and excellent actor. Can you imagine LADY GAGA doing this show back then? They would laugh her talentless ass back to the hole she crawled out from!

  • Note Dorothy's patented hands together move ... she showed that she was more than a reporter, but a fan. You can tell which mystery guests were here favorite stars by that move alone.

  • Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!

  • Oh come on, guys - Heston had one of the most distinctive voices short of Vincent Price in Hollywood. They couldn't figure it out right away?

  • Badass signature!

  • WOW! What a man!!

Always the true gentleman... and a class act.

  • Charlton Heston was a true legend

  • He must have been relatively new back then, seeing that they couldn't recognize him from his voice immediately.

  • Charlton Heston... gives me shivers.... up and down my spin e I love him so much.

  • He was such a gorgeous guy

  • At the end (when Chuck is shaking hands with everyone), it looks as if he wants to take a leak :D

  • This is TERRIFIC !!! : )

Thank you for post it !.

  • The movie stars back then are so much cooler then these people that call themselves actors today.

  • i know, though the public were also more charming back then.manners and such

  • @bradleyjstevens they were humble, and knew what life was about.

  • @bradleyjstevens thats so true. and comments like your all over the old wml videos here. people prefer the stars of past days.....i have hopes for parts of humanity

  • Didn't anyone tell him to disguise his voice.

He should have shoot a gun in the air. One for yes, two for no.

  • He had such a cool voice......

  • The first time he spoke, I was like "how could they not know who he is?" His voice...ah yes...

  • @cherryspud1989 I was thinking the exact same thing. Very distinctive voice!

  • A STAR HE WAS.

  • Most fantastic and spectacular scene EVER in motion picture history: the chariot race in "Ben-Hur." RIP Mr. Heston......you were one of the TRULY great and legendary actors....

  • Entertainment back in the 50's was so simple. How can they not know who it is? His voice is so unique. LOL

  • Cool Guy.!

  • RIP, Mr. Heston. One of the true icons of film. None of these present day clowns even come close.

  • Why the hell did Dorothy ask him if he was 'Elvis?", and she said Elvis in a derogatory way.

  • @MisterMasterShafter I think she was trying to mimic a southern, Tennessee accent.

  • You got good TV back in the day americans

  • he was in moses lol super movie

  • You make it sound like he involved himself in illegal activity, or things that weren't ethical or moral. Pick up a fucking book sometime, and read all about the way the nation was founded. Heston led a very decent life, and leading the NRA is hardly anything to be ashamed of ( I've never owned a gun). Just like Freedom of the Press and Freedom of Religion, the Right to Bear Arms was put in the Constitution for a reason. What's wrong with you? Did your mother ever drop you on your head? Dickhead

  • Yawn. Quite probably far more educated than you, particularly about American history. The NRA is a far-right nutjob outfit, pure and simple, and it's a shame he got mixed up with them. It doesn't even vaguely resemble the organization that I grew up with. And I do own guns. The rest of the ad hominem attacks are boring. Go have some more cold(er) alcohol.

  • If you consider the NRA a "far-right nutjob outfit" then you are an uninformed ass.

  • @elric69 The NRA isn't nearly as far right as Obama is to the left. Sounds like you know nothing of the current NRA.

  • @reno93535 Heston was a Democrat like Reagan until this whole gun thing came up. Look at JFK's policies. If he were alive today, he'd make even Republicans squirm.

  • @surfer53 If JFK were alive, he would most definitely be considered a Conservative. The Dems would vilifiy him.

  • Charlton Heston was the MAN.

  • "Get your stinkin' paws off me you DAMN DIRTY APE!".

  • DAMN HOTNESS.

  • Love him, he was an icon!!!!

  • I think we should say Brady looks like HIM.

  • he looks a lot like the current new eng patriot qb, brady.. no?

  • i see some resemblance there

  • An all-time fav actor. He was unbelievable.

  • did anyone notice the women drooling over.....watch as he shakes hands with the lady..shes eyeing him up n down..lol

  • How did they NOT know it was Charlton Heston? That voice is one of a kind!!!! I'm surprised it took the panel so long....

  • adrian993

That was 1956.On the beginnig of his career.

  • Ahhhhh...ok. That makes sense. I mean, Charlton Heston has a pretty distinctive voice...

  • Well he'd already been in DeMille's "The Greatest Show on Earth" and "Ruby Gentry", both in 1952...

  • Mr. Fairbanks was refering to Yul Brynner.

  • *who was in The King & I both on Broadway and in the film, and played Ramesses in The Ten Commandments

  • The great Chuck!

  • He said in his bio he wanted to shoot the whole panel for guessing so early.

  • Great new bio (Charlton Heston: An Incredible LIfe: Revised Edition) at amazon!

  • Mmmmm....yum!! Totally gorgeous and that deep voice sends tingles down my spine woohooo)!! He was so good looking as an old man too and i'm in my twenties (weird, i know)!!!

  • So good looking

  • Oohh, he's a deep one...

    Charlton was the MAN!!!

  • Great actor.

  • What a sexy voice. Wow.

  • he doesn't even try and to disguise his voice

  • Is "Mr. Fairbanks" one of the judges on the panel, is he Douglas Fairbanks, Jr?

  • I didn't know he died. How did I not know that? How did it happen?

  • Is it just me or is Dorthy annoying?

  • Very.

  • He has such distinguishable voice. This must have been before he was famous. He's my hero, btw.

  • He had been in a bunch of films, many of them very successful, by this point, including DeMille's "The Greatest Show on Earth" and the "Ten Commandments". Why he didn't disguise his voice, I don't know, but he did OK anyway.

  • heston the omega man great

  • I wonder why the late great Mr Heston didn't disguise his voice. All the other celebrities did. Even though I didn't share all of his political views, I greatly respected his as an actor. It's wonderful that he kept his hand in stage work for most of his working career. He was a truly class act....a true gentleman. He even had a great sense of humor about himself, which is sadly not seen too often in show biz. Thanks for sharing this fascinating clip with us!

  • Thanks for defending freedom and the Bill of Rights which was written to protect it.

  • A handsome man, a brilliant man, a charismatic man. He thought he could hide that sexy deep voice!

    "behold his mighty hand"

  • What a voice...

  • "recent actions" He suffered from Alzeimers for close to a decade was at home in bed being cared for by his family. and died over 13 months ago. what recent actions are you refering?

  • So u were actually saying u disliked his politics prior to subcoming to the tragic ending of his life by alzeimers. 20 years ago. since he died over a year ago and has had no political views in over a decade due to having nor real "memory left" let him rest in peace and don't worry he can't hurt u with his politics guns etc. If he didnt subcome to the awful disease I think he would have made a damn good president of the Unitied states of America!

  • Well you do realize that not everyone has to agree with your personal view and in my opinion, if your referring to what I think your own politics are - they have caused more trouble for our society than the ones Mr. Heston believed in.

  • Absolutely. Thank God you and I were born in a world which is free and our minds can work by their own, without a state that controls it. Therefore, You're free to disagree of me, at my thoughts about Mister Heston. Thanks for the education.

  • How can you not recognize that voice?! LOL

  • LOVE CHARLTON HESTON

  • THAT VOICE!!! OMG!

  • What a gentleman he was - you just don't see people like him in hollywood anymore; they're all out getting drunk and stoned. Mr. Heston was married to the same lady for over 50 years!

  • Pretty snazzy signature, there.

  • I loved "The Ten Commandments". I have it on VHS XD. Anyway, this clip was hilarious LOL. Arlene made me laugh in the beginning haha

    ~Jade808~

  • Man, Arlene was getting wet when he heard his voice!!! I would too!!!

  • Those who were critical (which he may have sometimes deserved) and mean when they spoke about him (which he did not deserve) should see this clip, and some other clips of him. This would hopefullly give a more fuller portrait of this man.

  • The nasty comment must have been removed but I bet it had to do with the NRA and Heston's impeccable conservative views or his Alzheimer's. He was a great man, actor and thinker. R.I.P.

  • Such a distinctive voice.

  • What A Great American!!!!!! RIP

  • oh, i love mr. heston!

  • There was only ONE!
