There are two reasons that crowd should not be applauding. 1) It's the middle of the performance of an aria. Wait until the end. Also, 2) she's not singing it in the original key. And she didn't even go into the second section of it. Very weak performance.
if you are singing correctly, you should never make those faces. and it is utterly evil to transpose this aria. what makes this aria the most difficult in the world is the fact that it is in a coloratura's range. this video makes me sad :(
She looks like she's searching in the air for the those top notes... Really uncomfortable with her voice... I don't mind people singing like that an opera aria, but I do mind (as a young trainee on classical singing) calling that "opera" singing!! This is NOT Opera singing!!!
Complainers. Are you aware of what kind of show this is? Have you got any idea of how much more training real opera singers have? I'm surprised at your sharp attitude towards people who dare do this.
This is not that great at all. She slowed down the tempo so much that it ruins the effect of the entire song, but she didn't sing the entire song...anyway, she looked like she was in major pain while singing the high notes and then threw her hands up in the air like she did a spectacular job. She did not.
@madisonbluth I'm sure she wouldn't claim to be an opera singer but she gave it a damn good go. I'm equally sure that few opera singers could do as a good a job if they attempted to sing her kind of songs. I think she was very brave and acquitted herself very well.
@opatton182009 haha :D nice one... Just in case anyone wonders, it's "Verzweiflung" (despair).
Apart from that, I agree with both nikkieup14 and lisamayavonB. Do NOT transpose it and do NOT make it slower!! But under the given circumstances, good job. Damrau has already been mentioned, but listen to Dessay as well! If you really want to understand the emotions, get a translation of the lyrics (and of the whole plot)!!!
to be honest, this really isnt bad at all, especially considering that this type of music is so new to her. i mean, of course shes no diana damrau, and they lowered the key a minor 3rd, but in all it is a good performance.
This was not the finest execution of the Queen of the Night aria. She should be jumping on the notes lightly and instead you can feel that it takes so much effort for her to hit those notes, and also she delays the sounds. So it should be quicker and lighter
You must have no experience to say that they shouldn't applaud during the performance, because all over the world opera singers get a live reaction from the audience during their performance. They get either booed &hissed at or cheered depending on how good their act was, so it's a myth that you should only clap and stand up straight in the opera!
Mozart may have written this to suit the voice range of the original performer and it doesn't mean that EVERYONE has to have the same voice range, so to transpose this into a different key for Marcella Detroit should not have to be a problem.
Music is an interpretation and no two performers can be perfectly the same. Otherwise we should do the same with instuments and scrap the Bb trumpet and and make them all C major!
MUSIC DOES NOT HAVE TO BE PLAYING OR SUNG IN THE ORIGINAL KEY! TRANSPOSING MUSIC WILL ALMOST ALWAYS HAPPEN, sometimes because the singer can't go low enough or high enough. This aria is difficult for even the most talented singers because of the top F# so they usually bring it down anyway even for proffesionals.
Not only is this version a minor third lower, the tempo is extremely slow. I was cringing the whole time I watched this, so much so that I couldn't bear to watch it past 1:00.
so much pain, like was already said..and wtf is up with the cheering DURING the performance. you've gotta be a real dumbass to applaud in the middle of a classical performance
For the haters. you guys obviously have no idea what you are talking about other wise she wouldn't of gotten the reaction she did that night and you have no idea how ridiculously hard it to sing opera especially as coming from the training she had. So yeah just because its sung high doesn't mean its bad...
@TheEnlightenyourself It is very hard to sing opera but she isn't singing an opera. She is singing a transposed and simplified aria with a microphone. This isn't opera. Also, this is one of the most difficult arias and pop singers shouldn't try it. The premise of the show was stupid. At the very least, they should've asked these pop singers sing something simpler. Oh, and she doesn't sing it high, she sings it lower than it's written. Try Diana Damrau to hear how it should be sung.
@barmanjoe Yes, back in the 19th century every society lady could probably make an operatic sound as they all had lessons. I am not a singer, but I had some lessons - made me appreciate how difficult classical singing is - so I suppose I could make an "operatic" sound too, too bad nobody would hear me beyond the end of the stage. In all fairness, she is much better than I expected, why try it? Best wishes on your career, you are all amazing. Too bad so many people have never heard real opera.
@barmanjoe I know - I mentioned it in the first comment, but I'd imagine it's still difficult for someone who is not an opera singer. She has a nice tone; obviously this isn't opera, she'll probably will not even be heard in opera. But... she sounds better than many pop singers. I wonder why they went with changing these difficult opera arias instead of some art songs. And having Jenkins as a teacher????
@ugha323a This isn't opera. This is a pop singer who will likely not even be heard in an opera theater singing a transposed and simplified aria with a microphone. I admit for a pop singer she sounds nice, but nowhere near opera standards. To begin with it should be sung as written and in the original key; without microphone, with perfect German diction, with expression. And in full opera....
In my humble opinion: Her posture was not the best for this specific aria, I believe in the very high notes her facial expression looked very forced. She should have used more techniques and dynamics, but overall she hit the high notes which I give her credit for. Good overall
for the haters... go easy on her... this is one of the most difficult aria for a soprano and for someone that didnt have formal training I think she did great
HaberfieldChiro. Very well put! as for tempo and presentation mentioned elsewhwhere this would have been part of the whole production by the Orchestra and musical directors that know a helluvalot more than we do including myself and I have qualifications in music performance and theory!
I actually like LGG but I was reffering to her (as a pop singer not opera) singing "queen of the night" as good as M.D. (again as a popsinger not opera). I just listed to "The lady is a tramp" with Tony Bennett and I agree it is really good as you say, when Ga Ga is done with pop there is a new musical genre waiting for her because this stuff she really can do (now in my favorites list) I saw her on TV playing piano in such a way that suggests she is highly musically trained.
@chromatic8 Then you haven't seen nor heard Diana Damrau who sang this aria much better. There is no acting here and the sounds are not well controlled. And there is huge difference between classical voice and voices that artists you listed have.
@chromatic8 Buddy, please. The reason it gives me tingles is that it is so labored and childish. She performes with to much affectation, effort and little talent. PLEASE check Diana Damrau if you want to tingle.
@itsallthesametothem I did listen to Diana Damrau and enjoyed it immensely, but music is something that either hits the spot or it doesn't and it's something I have no control over, this is my prefered version and technicalities for some reason have gone out of the window, for me, music is an unknown quantity and as I said before, "for reasons I cannot explain". If we are talking about a full opera performance then I would no doubt have a different view. Regards and thanks, chromatic8.
She was actually better than the famous Florence Foster Jenkins. Which isn't much of an achievement obviously, but hey, at least she wasn't the worst ever to sing this aria in front of a public.
I thing that was pretty good, considering she'd only been doing the opera for a little while! Even the opera singers struggle with this one. I didn't think it sounded unpleasant.
The level of her performance was somewhere between that of my sister and that of my parrot. And people cheered her still. What has this world come to?...
It is hands down the worst thing I have ever seen AND heard! She has horrible presence, poor technique, and it is sad how the media has turned the finer arts into a complete bastardization of such. Face it, Mozart, Brahms, Beethoven as well as the visual arts like Degas, and Van Gogh are not made for the average common persons appreciation. Therefore stick to pop music and wall paper for you enjoyment pleasure!
@sfranz9873 Mozart was pop music when he wrote it. Mozart was trying to be rich and famous just like any other composer, past or present. Great art is for everyone. I started enjoying classical music after listening to Victor Borge albums. NOw I enjoy going to Tanglewood everytime I have a chance.
Arrogant snobs like you should be forced to listen to nothing but Tiny Tim records.
This is an insult to Mozart's genius and to those of us who work on this role day in and out to do right by one of his many masterpieces. Serious dislike.
She is not an opera star. It's a show where pop stars sing opera. She did great. Before you post something, actually read and understand what's going on in the video.
Most if not all of the people who commented without actually taking the time to see what this is all about can not sing this, and especially not as well as Marcella did.
Please use your head before opening your mouth.
There's a lot of athlete's tongue going around, no?
I love Marcella Detroit and hadn't realised she's done this. I realise that for traditional opera lovers, there have been some compromises that allow her to perform it, but she's done a pretty darn good job at what of the most difficult vocal pieces ever written.
Half the aria, an octave too low and far too slow a pace. Nothing to do with Mozart's composition. It's not meant to be a little hum along song! At least the audience claps over it, that is some relief. From poop to poopera. Watching these people struggle and shriek dulls discernment and stops trained opera students from thriving, being appropriately rewarded or aired publicly.
@antihedon It doesn't need much opera knowledge to recognize that this is a quite bad rendition... I guess it's easy actually. Listen to Dessay, Diana Damrau and such and compare. There you go!
Sounds like she just started training a few months ago, and was just able to hit those notes. And its like she wasn't really into it, like she should of been. She should of been more serious.
this is very disgusting , the opera aria changed of original note , ajjjjjjjjjjjjjjj like 3 notes more down , please dont sing this aria , if dont get the high notes with the technique , just guacala
I enjoyed this, but I have two problems with it also; number one: she sings more of an alto, not soprano. She does well at it, but she is not a real SOPRANO. number two: I hate when people cut the song shorter than what it is supposed to be, then add a cheesy ending to it. If you're gonna sing Queen of the Night, sing Queen of the Night. Not half of the aria with a stupid sudden ending. But she can hit the high notes well. well deserved applause!!
@primohomme Really?????????? a high soprano? listen to actual sopranists that sing this aria like Dessay and Damrau and Anderson, and then tell me she sings at a soprano range. sorry to be rude, but seriously?
She is singing this a minor third lower, so the highest is D instead of F, and two high D's is still high soprano. Also the voice is not just how high or low one sings, but the color, and the color of her voice is lyric soprano.
Do you even know what a mezzo-soprano or a contralto sound like?
This is a real contralto:
watch?v=p-svi2L03uY
And this is a real mezzo:
watch?v=fL3lyitc9vo
Voice is a lot more than range or even tessitura, but also timbre, and Marcella's timbre is 100% lyric soprano, even if she doesn't have a high F anymore.
wow listen to all the opera snobs. You do realize that everyone outside your little world hates you, right? lol. She did an excellent job -- for a pop singer. For an opera singer, lots of problems of course. No pop star ever had to worry about not contorting their face while belting out rock and roll, for example. But if she had trained opera all her life? I'd say she'd be great.
@algerhistogram You're right. For an pop singer, she did a great job. But for how it is supposed to sound, she's awful. If you can't sing something properly and excellently; don't sing it! And facial control is a big thing. It produces a cleaner note. And of course if she'd trained all her life she'd be fantastic. That's the nature of things. To quote a platitude: Practice makes Perfect. The show is called popstar to OPERASTAR. If you want to perform opera, you will be judged by opera standards.
@algerhistogram Everybody who had been trained opera all their life would do an excellent job... Is that really an argument? If you can't sing, then don't sing. It's simple as that
You can't critique her rendition of this song as if she was a classically-trained opera singer. For a pop singer to cross over to opera, and to such a difficult aria as this, can be such a difficult challenge. As a classical singer and opera fanatic myself, I can say that this was a good rendition for a pop singer.
And of course she had to have the song altered. Even the strongest of sopranos often have a difficult time adjusting to the fast tempo and range of the piece.
I would noramllyy say that this is an insanely difficult song and that many professional sopranos have trouble with it. However I'm feeling generous, so it was definitely a good attempt, the coloratura passage was actually well done in respect to timing and where they lowered the song to.
People are applauding because they've either probably never heard opera or have never heard this done right, she butchered the aria. If she couldn't sing it she should have picked a different piece to perform. I can't believe how low and slow it is :/
It doesn't bother me that she lowered it, it's a high piece. It doesn't bother me that she slowed it down, it's hard to sing that high that fast. But to do both? It disrespects the orignal intention of the Aria. Mozart wrote it for his sister in law to show off her high tessitura and great coloratura ability. Not everyone has that which is why you either lower it or slow it down. but you don't do both.
@vitaminB100 She has not transposed the key; that's such a worn-out criticism on YouTube. If you can't gauge pitch by ear, check against a keyboard or pitchpipe or even another performance right here in Y.T. side by side. Nor is it terribly slow; I've heard professional performances at about this tempo; although yes, a fully-practiced OPERA-singer should give a much lighter and faster rendition. For cross-over (Popstar to Operastar,) it's very creditable. That's not to say I "like" it; I don't.
Not bad for a swine flu pop opera female singer but really I do have to say is that when she came up, and started the show I'm like a bobbahead, and said what?
She's singing it in the wrong key, but it still sounds great! The only thing is, she looks kind of weird when she's trying to hit the high notes. Her eyes twitched a bit! Overall, a wonderful performance though!
Oh come on people! This girl is a pop singer, and a good one, given a week of practice to sing an Aria that in any one decade, can be performed successfully by only a handful of the top professional dramatic and or lyric sopranos. She is nervous, stressed & strained to the max, wrapping herself around those german vowel sounds. In the end, she has guts and stands triumphant.(I am sure she belted down 10 scotch & cokes after this, hahaha).Just great!!
There are two reasons that crowd should not be applauding. 1) It's the middle of the performance of an aria. Wait until the end. Also, 2) she's not singing it in the original key. And she didn't even go into the second section of it. Very weak performance.

Therefore stick to pop music and wall paper for you enjoyment pleasure!
sfranz9873 6 months ago
@sfranz9873 Mozart was pop music when he wrote it. Mozart was trying to be rich and famous just like any other composer, past or present. Great art is for everyone. I started enjoying classical music after listening to Victor Borge albums. NOw I enjoy going to Tanglewood everytime I have a chance.
Arrogant snobs like you should be forced to listen to nothing but Tiny Tim records.

This is an insult to Mozart's genius and to those of us who work on this role day in and out to do right by one of his many masterpieces. Serious dislike.

Horrible! Now I'm going to have to watch Diana Damrau's rendition again just to give me back that small hope for the future of opera.

She is not an opera star. It's a show where pop stars sing opera. She did great. Before you post something, actually read and understand what's going on in the video.
Most if not all of the people who commented without actually taking the time to see what this is all about can not sing this, and especially not as well as Marcella did.
Please use your head before opening your mouth.

it's a minor third lower, but great technique for a pop singer otherwise!

I love Marcella Detroit and hadn't realised she's done this. I realise that for traditional opera lovers, there have been some compromises that allow her to perform it, but she's done a pretty darn good job at what of the most difficult vocal pieces ever written.

AEmylia24 8 months ago
Half the aria, an octave too low and far too slow a pace. Nothing to do with Mozart's composition. It's not meant to be a little hum along song! At least the audience claps over it, that is some relief. From poop to poopera. Watching these people struggle and shriek dulls discernment and stops trained opera students from thriving, being appropriately rewarded or aired publicly.

Popular culture people needs to learn more about opera...
antihedon 8 months ago
@antihedon It doesn't need much opera knowledge to recognize that this is a quite bad rendition... I guess it's easy actually. Listen to Dessay, Diana Damrau and such and compare. There you go!
NighttimeBird 6 months ago
Too slow. It just seemed like she was having to try really hard and then wasn't in the music at all. Maybe with some more training.
AngedeleCor 8 months ago
I don't think she's a soprano, so tell her she needs to be that to sing this and she's not.
Einstanzinho 8 months ago 2
Sounds like she just started training a few months ago, and was just able to hit those notes. And its like she wasn't really into it, like she should of been. She should of been more serious.

this is very disgusting , the opera aria changed of original note , ajjjjjjjjjjjjjjj like 3 notes more down , please dont sing this aria , if dont get the high notes with the technique , just guacala

MrsMosquiz 9 months ago
I enjoyed this, but I have two problems with it also; number one: she sings more of an alto, not soprano. She does well at it, but she is not a real SOPRANO. number two: I hate when people cut the song shorter than what it is supposed to be, then add a cheesy ending to it. If you're gonna sing Queen of the Night, sing Queen of the Night. Not half of the aria with a stupid sudden ending. But she can hit the high notes well. well deserved applause!!
SilenceTheQuiet 9 months ago
@SilenceTheQuiet
She is certainly not an alto, her timbre is pure soprano
She is used to singing alto like most female pop singers are
But the color of her voice and range suggest high soprano.
primohomme 9 months ago
@primohomme Really?????????? a high soprano? listen to actual sopranists that sing this aria like Dessay and Damrau and Anderson, and then tell me she sings at a soprano range. sorry to be rude, but seriously?
SilenceTheQuiet 9 months ago
@SilenceTheQuiet
She is singing this a minor third lower, so the highest is D instead of F, and two high D's is still high soprano. Also the voice is not just how high or low one sings, but the color, and the color of her voice is lyric soprano.
primohomme 9 months ago
@primohomme ... I still disagree. She did great, but she doesn't sound like a soprano at all...
SilenceTheQuiet 8 months ago 2
@SilenceTheQuiet
Do you even know what a mezzo-soprano or a contralto sound like?
This is a real contralto:
watch?v=p-svi2L03uY
And this is a real mezzo:
watch?v=fL3lyitc9vo
Voice is a lot more than range or even tessitura, but also timbre, and Marcella's timbre is 100% lyric soprano, even if she doesn't have a high F anymore.
primohomme 8 months ago
WTF ?!

What's the point of trying to do something for which you are totally unqualified? Would she dare to fly an airplane without the proper training?

TheWerttr 9 months ago
wow listen to all the opera snobs. You do realize that everyone outside your little world hates you, right? lol. She did an excellent job -- for a pop singer. For an opera singer, lots of problems of course. No pop star ever had to worry about not contorting their face while belting out rock and roll, for example. But if she had trained opera all her life? I'd say she'd be great.
algerhistogram 9 months ago
@algerhistogram You're right. For an pop singer, she did a great job. But for how it is supposed to sound, she's awful. If you can't sing something properly and excellently; don't sing it! And facial control is a big thing. It produces a cleaner note. And of course if she'd trained all her life she'd be fantastic. That's the nature of things. To quote a platitude: Practice makes Perfect. The show is called popstar to OPERASTAR. If you want to perform opera, you will be judged by opera standards.
vitaminB100 9 months ago

TGTSTS 10 months ago
Brave attempt by an amatuer, but certainly no Diana Damrau
pillowbugg 10 months ago
I would noramllyy say that this is an insanely difficult song and that many professional sopranos have trouble with it. However I'm feeling generous, so it was definitely a good attempt, the coloratura passage was actually well done in respect to timing and where they lowered the song to.
vitaminB100 10 months ago
Grose. But... good try.
lesliepbv 10 months ago
People are applauding because they've either probably never heard opera or have never heard this done right, she butchered the aria. If she couldn't sing it she should have picked a different piece to perform. I can't believe how low and slow it is :/
BleedTheWineUnholy 10 months ago
@BleedTheWineUnholy she didn't pick the piece, the judges picked it for her.
DarkPhoenixBlood 9 months ago
It doesn't bother me that she lowered it, it's a high piece. It doesn't bother me that she slowed it down, it's hard to sing that high that fast. But to do both? It disrespects the orignal intention of the Aria. Mozart wrote it for his sister in law to show off her high tessitura and great coloratura ability. Not everyone has that which is why you either lower it or slow it down. but you don't do both.
vitaminB100 10 months ago
@vitaminB100 Does at least her singing in her throat and sounding like a rubber duck on those high Ds bother you? lol
3F93 10 months ago
@vitaminB100 She has not transposed the key; that's such a worn-out criticism on YouTube. If you can't gauge pitch by ear, check against a keyboard or pitchpipe or even another performance right here in Y.T. side by side. Nor is it terribly slow; I've heard professional performances at about this tempo; although yes, a fully-practiced OPERA-singer should give a much lighter and faster rendition. For cross-over (Popstar to Operastar,) it's very creditable. That's not to say I "like" it; I don't.
UlfenDaddy 9 months ago
Not bad for a swine flu pop opera female singer but really I do have to say is that when she came up, and started the show I'm like a bobbahead, and said what?
gnt80s 11 months ago
what about the second part of the aria - the more difficult one... why doesn't she just stick with pop
sashyaga 11 months ago
She's singing it in the wrong key, but it still sounds great! The only thing is, she looks kind of weird when she's trying to hit the high notes. Her eyes twitched a bit! Overall, a wonderful performance though!

JessKoeh88 11 months ago 3
Oh come on people! This girl is a pop singer, and a good one, given a week of practice to sing an Aria that in any one decade, can be performed successfully by only a handful of the top professional dramatic and or lyric sopranos. She is nervous, stressed & strained to the max, wrapping herself around those german vowel sounds. In the end, she has guts and stands triumphant.(I am sure she belted down 10 scotch & cokes after this, hahaha).Just great!!
