@USAForLife2057 Not really.Andrew was trying to maintain rapture(keep the city together)but fontaine was the real one who was fucking it up and corrupted it.You need to play the first game more if you haven`t and keep up with the story.
@Tyrik73 I played both games. Ryan was just as corrupt as Fontaine he killed or arrested anyone that threatened his power or disagreed with his ideals. Sofia Lamb for example, as well as Grace Holloway's boyfriend to "teach her a lesson". As well as many characters in Bioshock 1, Rapture isn't a paradise except for maybe elitists. The civil war isn't what destroyed Rapture it was starting to unravel before Fontaine came along, he was just the straw that broke the camels back.

man i really suck at following stories...i still dont really get this part, all I know is that when i played it, i was freaked out,cuz like he wanted to die or something...
andrew ryan is ur father. ur under mind contol. he calls u a slave. hes telling u that ur memories are all lies. Thier not ur family, the plane wasnt hijacked it was forced down. then he dies. hope this helps alot
at eh very begining if you look at the box you have if said would you kindly and the rest is too dark to see, it is infered that it said hijack the plane because there was a gun in the box.
Saddest and most intense part of the entire game. I really do feel badly for Ryan, all he wanted was a better world and as a result. He gets a Putting Iron in the Cranium.
yeah but jack was hypnotized so you couldnt help it now thats to find out that your father hypnotized you well actually i dont know who did hypnotize jack but its still really jacked up
Andrew Ryan is your biological father. remember the ghost of the stripper where you find her dead with ryans stuff? he killed her when he figured out that she sold you to tenenbaum for science fontaine made it so he has to react to the phrase "would you kindly" thats why atlas was saying that through the whole game because hes really fontaine conrtolling you he just faked his death
ar u sayin that from the start of the game right up until the point where he kills ryan he was hypnotised even though he was entirely controlled by the person playing the game lol
i know he's a megalomaniacal fascist with delusions of grandeur, its just that seeing him get his face bashed in with a golf club made me kind of feel for him...after all, its not like he created Rapture with the intention of having it degenerate into a dystopian nightmare-world. He just wanted to create a society better than the one he knew above the sea!
but u can blame him for not giving that hoe an abortion tut tut tut. if u ever get a hoe preggers always chop that little kiddy out. or 6years from then. that little egg u didnt set on fire cud smack u in the face with a golf club. u live and u learn... BUT NOT FOR RYAN LOLOLOLOLOl
The story also's got the side hint that you shouldn't care about the "totalitarian systems" (according to Popper) anyway but find your luck and happiness in your close social environment, illustrated by your family (Splicer quote: "I just didn't want to be lonely.").
if he would want to take over the control and finally infest the whole world, the plot apparently hints in the way that you should save what can be saved and return to surface. The message's clear: Even if some of us are up to good and prosperic goals, we cannot ignore some bad intentions as well - and thus have to follow social norms and systems - not to be hindered but to be protected.
("A season to live, a season to die, a season to build, a season to destroy.") and accepts his fate. The protagonist thus realizes that he himself didn't follow his own free will from the very moment he arrived in Rapture, no, from the beginning of his life and decides to take down Fontaine as well. Though the player's left somewhat of free will whether he would like to return to the surface and leave all that degradation down in the deep sea or
Clasping to his principles of free will over any norm, but not being able to see the downfall of him and his city, he chooses death (Do you really think he couldn't just saved his butt by saying "would you kindly", too?) by the hand of the protagonist who's being revealed by Ryan himself as a simple doll, mind-controlled by Fontaine himself. But in some way, Ryan manages to keep back something of that pride and free will as he choses death (more or less) freely
The philosophical background or framework of Bioshock is fascinating and the last big one since Deus Ex: Invisible War as far as I know. Basically, the developers tried an unbiased view of human socialisation, its advantages and fallacies. As the protagonist dives into the deepness of Rapture he gets confronted with three social systems in the real world - Capitalism, Religion and Socialism. Those three systems are fairly arbitrary but the system thinking during the Cold War - as in the story.
So it isn't only for atmospheric, i.e. nostalgic atmosphere that the story takes part in the year 1960 but in order to stress the ponderness and actuality of those questions back then as well. Since, the creator of Rapture, Andrew Ryan claims to have rejected all those systematic beliefs and wanted to create his own world - far away from those norms. What norms, is the immediate question of the careful observer and his addition "a free world where the strong isn't haltered by the weak,
where those weak human values don't hinder mankind's development" - the wind in which the story's blowing is clear: Social darwinism and anarchy. And the world of Rapture already turned into its deterioration as the protagonist sets foot into the city. But Andrew Ryan doesn't take those concepts as justification for his own dominance in his new built-up world. No, he strongly believes in and commits to them - and eventually falls prey to them himself.
Since his principles allow anybody and everybody to pursue his own interests and plans to gain wealth and happiness, opportunistic players without any principles at all join in the game as well - inpersonated by Frank Fontaine, a scrupelous businessman and scientist who's willing to take Ryan's world over.
im pretty sure he wanted you to see him trying to convince you to stop obeying atlas until the second he died, so you'd eventually take him out too.. remember he said something like "You may kill me, Atlas, but you will never take my city!" makes sense to me
Basically atlas is frank fontaine who controls you by using the term 'would you kindly' to make you perform simple taks and 'code yellow' to stop your heart from beating
turns out ryan and fontaine were at war for control of the city and ryan thought fontaine had been kiled so to stay low fontaine desguised himself as atlas
my question is why did atlas and Ryan hate each other? they help build Rapture together where they don't want government, religion or cults[nazi] to control them. I'm guessing a bad seed [nazi] got in? xD
good reply ; ) i still wanted to know about the perfect plastic surgeory madness... Did everyone in Rapture wanted to look perfect?
Shelman the plastic surgeon gone made even he made the perfect plastic face surgery, but stab the girl to death when you first encounter that boss in the Medical pavilion (sp?)
I love the fact that I pretty much guessed at all the plot twists in the game. I knew that the words "Would you kindly" meant something, and I knew that Atlas would turn on you. It's a great, yet predictable story.
Why does everybody keep saying poor ryan? Ryan did terrible things, in fact I think he was worse than Fontaine (still killed both of them happily though)
no he didnt.. the guy u play was a slave of atlas he always said "Now would you kindly!?" he wasn't bad... it was atlas and fontaine.. they wanted adam dead.
You can see the words 'would you kindly,' and some co ordinates on the flashback you see when Ryan mentions hijacking. You can see the would you kindly bit of the message at the beginning of the game too.
The thing is, the vita-chamber near him was turned off. Which, you imagine, he did on purpose. So, he couldn't come back to life since he'd be too far away, assuming we really know how they work.
The whole reason Ryan wanted to die is because it would have meant he "chose" to die. if he was unwillingly killed by you, it would have meant he was a "slave". It's why he kept saying "a man chooses, a slave obeys"
Also, yeah that was a good twist. With all the hype bioshock had I'm glad it delivered a worthy ending
DTS, what was going on is that a guy called Atlas you thought was helping you was commanding you by saying "would you kindly" at the beginning of each sentence.
The guy was Andrew Ryan, someone Atlas sent you to kill. He was showing Atlas was commanding him.
This really rekindled my love for FPS, I've grown really tired of the same old Halo and Half Life clones then bam. Would. You. Kindly. Only faggots and trolls hate on this game.
The whole Atlas=Evil Guy thing was kinda predictable, they already used that plot twist in System Shock 2. The "would you kindly" plot twist, on the other hand, is IMHO rather fresh and cool. It's basically explaining the FPS cliche of the main character running around blindly obeying radio orders and performing fetch quests for no apparent reason.
Wait so how did Atlas find you? Before the plane crash? So many questions I must ask Im sorry but this game looks so fuckin confusing it's like fight club 2! yeah and uploading all the cutscenes would be awesome thanks!
damn words of inspiration or death .....

Someone explain this to me. Who am I in that game and what is with the Would you Kindly.
TheeYoutubist 4 years ago
All threw out the game, Atlas will say" would you "Kindly" find a crow bar or something" and "Would you "Kindly" lower that weapon."
The word "Kindly" is the word that makes him a slave.
I am SO buying this game...

"Would you kindly" was the surogate hammer to the knee.

I never figured out why andrew ryan wanted to die though.
cameron0113 4 years ago
wait im confused why did he you to kill him if he was trying to get you NOT to kill him? was he just so arrogant?
dxhaloxc 4 years ago
The world he had created was falling apart at the seams, his vision dying a slow and painful death. He had nothing left to live for, so he didn't.
TomR17 4 years ago
he says that because he's been brainwashed. when eh says that he has to follow him like a slave. its a damn shame he didnt save ryan.
