The illusion itself works because it goes down exactly an octave, but there are multiple of the same note on different octaves at the same time, so if you hit 0 at the end, it will constantly go down as you start hearing each lower-pitched layer of sound. A 15 year old figured it out, why can't you?

it is easy to ecplain. as the pitch gets deeper it gest lower. and it is replaced slowly by another louder tone one ocatave above. so you hear always the same octave down in a kind of transition or you can say it is sometthing like crossfade. read more on wikipedia "shepard tone" there you can see a visualisation

@spikew10 Sorry to talk again, but if you listen to the begining of the video, the pitch sound low, and if you listen to the end, its actually higher than the begining. The sound is actually going up, and if you listen carefully at ythe begining you can hear ultra-sonic high pitch noises. Listen to the end, middle, and begining parts of this video, and you will find that the pitch goes down, up, then slightly down again. The frequency at the end is the same as the pitch at the begining

Haha, cute. The harmonic and tone frequencies modulate to match, and its like watching a barber pole. Each line/stack looks like its falling, but there's another one on "top" that comes down to take the other one's place in the same spatial spot, so like playing a scale or moving around a disrupted barber pole, you need to match correlating points/pitches or it doesn't work :D
