@woodyrocks1234 Thanks. Later on that year, I ended up putting foam pads under those speakers to kill the buzzing they would make at higher volumes, but other than that, they've been kicking out the sound:)
Lots of GM cars and trucks from the '60s through the '90s had 4x10 speakers.
Paper cones can sound fine. In fact many audiophiles prefer paper cones over plastic and metallic ones. However you can see at 2:54 where the foam surround had completely rotted away. This is a typical failure in older speakers, not just Delcos, and is the reason why they needed to be replaced.
Do you still have those old stock delco speakers, I will give you 5 bucks for them each, I like to rebuild speakers, and all these need is to be refoamed! lol
@SpeakerFreak95 D'oh! I sold them on Ebay a couple of weeks after I bought the new ones. There were just getting to be too many car parts in my garage. They were taking over.
I'll probably be replacing these speakers on my 86, once I get the radio fixed.
What worries me about the speakers you used, and all the modern speakers, is that they only present a 4ohm impedance and the factory radio expects 10ohm. Adding a resistor would fix the impedance, but I've read that also messes up the sound quality.
Some people still sell NOS 4x10 10ohm Delcos from the "premium sound" option. I'm inclined to go that route, though modern aftermarket speakers might be superior.
84-85 Fieros have 4x10's in the dash, and two 3.5's in each seat. The DeLorean uses two 3.5's in the dash, and two 4x10's in the rear. COINCIDENCE?! (Probably)
My speakers looked exactly like yours when I took them out. Original green label Pontiacs with the foam gone.
Older Chevy S-10s, GMC Sonoma/S-15 Used 4x10 in the back up until around 1993.
If good 4x10s were unavailable, I know you can get adapter plates to install a 4" speaker in a 4x6 hole (I know because that is what I have in my pickup), certainly someone makes a 4x10 version.
@weasel2htm Oh and I am 99.9% sure that the Chrysler K - cars (Reliant and Aries, don't know about the other K body cars) Used a 4x10 near the center of the dash if the installed radio was mono. If the radio installed was stereo, then a 3.5 inch speaker was installed at either end of the dash.
when i decided to replace my speakers in the dash of my 85 se last week. when i took the speaker covers off i was surprised to see a 5 inch Boston speaker in each side shoved into the speaker holes and when i took them out i saw the connectors were cut off and the wires wrapped around the connectors on the speakers..
thanks for the video I hope my cadillac is the same as yours on how the grills pop off, looks like it. and I did not know about the wire adaptor kits I figured I would butcher the old one off like i did when I replaced the speakers in my new yorker. as soon as I get the new radio for mine I am going to do it. good video 5 stars.
I really appreciate your videos! Super interesting. The other vehicles that had 4x10 were...1980-85 Olds 88, (Olds 98, Buick Park Ave 80-84) Cadillac Deville/ Fleetwood Brougham rwd. Pontiac Catalina/Parisienne, Chevrolet Caprice/Impala. 1977-90 Olds, Chevrolet, Pontiac, and Buick full size wagons. 1973-1991 Suburbans. 1986-87 Tornado/Riviera. Those are all the others I know of. Thanks again, Artist Mac, for all of your videos.
You didn't mention getting the polarity of the speaker wires right. If you have rear speakers at all (or, as in the case of my GT, speakers in the headrests) then it is critical that you get these wires hooked up right.
The different sizes of the speaker posts (one is twice the width of the other) makes a correct hookup a snap. Even if someone puts the wide lead on the narrow post, getting the narrow lead on the wide post is impossible. Then again, someone like that woman who spilled hot McDonald's coffee in her lap could probably get it wrong;-)
Even worse, DHL has started drop-shipping their "home-delivered" packages to the U.S. Post Office for THEM to deliver to residences. If DHL wants to get out of the home delivery business, they should just do it!

so if you install 4 ohms speakers in the fiero, it won't affect it? because i heard that using less that 8 or 10 ohms can affect the system..

Sometimes that can be a pain especially if the speakers are riveted onto the door or what ever like in my moms Astro.

Thanks for the info! It's good to know that there's still a market for the 4x10's, and that they'll keep making them (fingers crossed).
