what about the browser? i´ve heared that google chrome is installed and the vaio has got many problems with other browsers. is it true, or does any other browser works ,too?
i have the older (2008) sz series, should i just stay and wait a while? cause i sorta want to save up to buy a new computer since i cant use hd video editing here since its the windows vista business class... but i do want something small, fast, and similar to my current computer this sorta looks like it but in a rounder form... also want battery life for when i am on the go, but i dont go out much with my computer.
@EcBuddy123 I have an SZ and I still use it right next to my Y. The screen on the SZ is MUCH better than the Y, but the battery life on the Y is the reason I purchased and it is the only laptop I travel with. The SZ never leaves my desk.
This is far better than the MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo, Sony has the CULV Intel's fastest Processor with great performance and low voltage consuming, allowing a video, music or photograph professional go outside for 8 hours without caring the power would go down. For me these laptops are better than those with Core i3 or Core i5 since these CPU's use too much power and consumes battery very fast
Can you please comment on real-world battery life of VPCY118GX? Does it still suck (i.e. 3-4hours instead of advertised 8hours)? I like the looks and specs otherwise...
@freezerlunik Real world - 5 hours standard battery 7 hours extended battery. That's without trying to conserve any power. I have been able to get more life out of the batteries by dimming the screen, though.
I'm thinking about getting this laptop, but the Sony Vaio CW series seems pretty good too. The CW has a better video card and has an optical drive (making it 5.3 lbs) and it comes with Intel Core i3... but it has around 4 hours of battery life. Which one do you recommend? Thanks again
@tim128lee The CW has better performance, but nothing beats the battery life of the Y. I literally NEVER take the power supply with me when I leave the house now. It's a relief not to think about losing power.
@tim128lee i agree with gadgetfann...i just had my cw for almost 2 months now and it's really a nice looking and good perferming laptop. However the battery life is a little bit disappointing, but not that bad...
@tim128lee No, surprisingly it doesn't run slow or lag. Processor speed doesn't seem to be a factor for any productivity software. I also use it for Photoshop.
i have a vaio p and broke it a week ago... and i'm planning to buy one of this... can you make a review about this laptop?? and is this the $999.99 model??
@PantheraLeo205 I haven't heard a squealing or buzzing noise from mine. That seems to be an odd issue. The only noises that are audible are the slight blowing of the fan and if I put my ear to the keyboard, I can hear a slight noise that sounds like the hard drive being accessed, but it is actually some type of electrical noise. You may have a faulty unit based upon what you're reporting...
Hi, I've heard that you used Photoshop and Dreamweaver on the Y. I'm planning to buy a Y series, but not sure if it can handle AutoCAD (the reason I'm still hesitating). Not sure if you're familiar with AutoCAD. But...
@nartin86 Hi, using Photoshop and Dreamweaver are no problem on the Y. However, some PS image filters take longer to process. I don't use AutoCAD, so I can't comment on how the Y will handle...
Hey, just got the laptop today and there are a few issues I would like to address. First, the keys are pretty loud when you type fast on them. Louder than the ASUS UL's keyboard, which I thought was bad enough when compared to the VAIO Z, which has a soft, near silent sound.
There's also a continous squeaking noise coming from the CPU. It is talked about on Sony's user reviews for the Y-series. I know for a fact that it is coming from the CPU and not the fan/HDD b/c I've owned a Dell, M1750, that had a similar problem. If you install a program called "RMClock", it'll suppress the squeak, but this method was not successful with the Sony.
Good laptop for the price($724 w/ student discount) but looks like I might be going back to a Z-series.
@AzNBoy1988 Sorry to hear about your issues. They keyboard is more silent on the Y than on my Vaio SZ and other models, so I never noticed it. I just noticed the CPU noise too, but I have to put my ear to the keyboard to hear it. I think I assumed it was the hard drive, so I never noticed it before. I'm enjoying my Vaio Y a lot, so these aren't dealbreakers for me. The Z is a good replacement option, although it's pretty expensive...
@nartin86 I have a MSI Wind with an Atom processor and it is very slow compared to the Vaio Y. I stopped using my Wind awhile ago because it just isn't practical for my work. I regularly keep 7 to 8 apps open at the same time and don't notice any lag or slowness with the Y at all. It's surprisingly fast.
how fast is the processor compare to other core 2 duo that's above 2.0 ghz?. As I know, the vaio y only has 1.30 ghz. This is why I'm still confuse about processors.
As an update, I finally purchased the laptop at at total of $724.01(cheaper package) with the student discount. I'll let you guys know how it is when it arrives.
@PantheraLeo205 The more I use the Y, the more I appreciate it. The MacBP wasn't an option for me beause the battery can't be swapped out. I hate the idea of traveling and having to find a place to plug in. They Sony Y NEVER has to be plugged in when I'm on the go because I can simply swap the battery when one gets low. It also has an expresscard slot, which can be used to add a USB 3.0 port or a wireless modem, etc.
@lifematch The standard battery is rated at 8 hrs, the large battery is rated at 12 hrs. In "real-world" use, I'm seeing about 5 to 6 hrs with the standard battery and 7 to 8 hrs with the extended.
Hey, I now have a vaio FZ series (that's 15,4 inch) . But I really like watching movies on my laptop, though it still needs to be suitable for travelling. I'm concerned with the screen of the Vaio Y, is it big enough to ENJOY movies? =S
@bakkermaarten007 I have an FS that has the same screen size as your FZ, so I know what you mean. I prefer 15.4" or 17.3" for movie watching, but 13.3" is still ok. You may want to check out a 13.3" at Best Buy or someplace before you buy the Vaio Y to make sure it'll work for you.
Hey, I have the UL30a and wanted to know the CPU temp.
For a quick comparison, the UL30 idles at 44C at most and fan is almost always off. Even if it's on, its really quiet and really cool. It gets warm on the bottom left corner, where the vents are.
I am looking to make the switch to the Y series but I was disappointed with your comment earlier about the fan noise. Like
PantheraLeo205 has stated, I hate the fan noise as well as the laptop getting too hot. I use my laptop mostly on the LAP.
@AzNBoy1988 Also, the Vaio Y is lukewarm at it's warmest if you put your hand near the fan vent. It isn't hot on the bottom at all... Not sure of the actual operating temp, but I have a Vaio SZ that almost always runs very warm to hot. The Vaio Y is very cool by comparison.
@AzNBoy1988 The fan is always on on the Y. There is only a vent on left side; no fan on the right at all. The fan is quiet, but if you're in a silent room like an enclosed room where there is no noise at all and you listen for the fan, you can hear it. If you're not listening for the sound of the fan blowing, you definitely won't hear it. It's the quietest fan of any computer I've owned (and I have 7 Vaios currently), so don't worry that it's too loud.
7 Vaios? Wow. I have a Z540, but recently its been getting too hot and the fan sounds close to a hand-held vaccum cleaner..(idles 60C!) When it was new, the fan would frequently run at low rpm's as well.
I frequently use my laptop in the library while studying, so I may give it a try, especially with Sony's return policy.
Thank you so much, with your advice, I can now purchase the Y with confidence! =)
Any of those 7 Vaio's happen to be a Vaio X11? I'm also interested in that but I read a few reviews stating that there was an actual sticker warning the owner that it could cause harm if placed on one's lap!
@AzNBoy1988 I'm happy to help. I don't have the X. I've seen it at the SonyStyle store at the mall and it's an amazing computer. The weight/size make it perfect for travel. The Y is still a better buy to me, though.
Get the compressed air and clean out the fan, be very careful not to blow too much air into it and damage the fan. (do not keep blowing air in for too long) 2 seconds, then let go, two seconds, then let go. Hope this will help lower the noise and computer getting way too hot.
Zaval777, thank you for your advice. That was the first step I did when I noticed my fan pick up abnormally. Sprayed co2 into the vents in burst of every second. Went the extra step and dissembled it since it was out of warranty and no luck. I plan on going to the Sony Styles store and getting a quote on a trade-in value and purchase a Y-series! =)
@PantheraLeo205 I dislike fan noise as well. The fan on the Vaio Y isn't noisy, but if you listen for it, you will hear it. I'm not sure if that helps. I wouldn't really call it "noise" because it's quiet, but you can tell that the fan is silently doing it's job when it's on.
@marcelodeargentina ASUS automatically overclocks their UL to 1.73Ghz out of the box. I'm not sure about overclocking the Sony. Honestly, if speed were my primary concern, I would have purchased a different computer, like the Vaio S or something similar. This system is primarily meant to provide longer battery life.
Hey, how well would you say the SU7300 processor handles browsing and streaming music at the same time?
I'm more concerned with performance while I browse the internet or use office productivity software while also having WMP/Zune Software playing music at the same time.
It's the main reason I'm hesitant about getting this in Apirl.
@Sinochu You won't encounter any hiccups with these tasks. This is the Core 2 Duo and it handles productivity software and music playing with ease for me. I think you'd have to throw a lot more at it (i.e. video editing or heavy gameplay) to encounter any performance issues.
@elkorhaly The bigger battery acts almost as a stand for the Vaio. It lifts the back of the Vaio Y about 1/2" from the desk. Battery life is ok. It isn't as stellar as I'd hoped. I'm sure better results are possible, but the extended battery is yielding about 6 to 7 hrs for me. Not quite as good as the 12 hrs advertised, but still ok and enough to get me through the work day. I don't feel like I have to carry a power supply with me anymore when I'm working away from the office.
@elkorhaly The additional weight from the extended battery isn't that noticable to me. The bulk is more problematic than the weight since the battery portrudes about 1/2" from the bottom fo the computer, but even that is just a minor annoyance. I would highly recommend for studying and light entertainment. I've used the Vaio Y everyday since it arrived for at least 10 to 16 hrs a day for programming, photo editing and viewing HD videos. Nothing has been an issue so far.
Great video mate. Just a few questions - How does this computer handle games? How's the graphics card? Coz i have microsoft flight simulator x and would like to run it occasionally..
Also, Im kinda confused about the different priced models. Because on the sony site there is only one that costs $1100 AUD.
@tracuer63 I'm not a gamer and don't run games on the Vaio Y. In my opinion, since this only has a 1.3Ghz CULV processor, I don't think gaming would be its strong point. The Y is likely best used for business applications and light graphics. I'm not familiar with the pricing model in Australia. In the US, the $999 version coms with 2 batteries, Windows 7 Professional and a 500GB drive, whereas the $799 model comes with 1 standard battery, Windows 7 Home Premium and a 320GB drive.
@bardardo It's the CULV processor (consumer ultra-low voltage). These processors are meant to provide extra-long battery life rather than performance, thus the 12 hr battery life potential on this and the comparable Acer Timeline and ASUS UL models... The Vaio Y uses the 1.3GHz Core 2 Duo
Thank you so much! Your comments in this thread are invaluable since there are no proper reviews of this laptop on the net. I've had a S150 for 6 years and it's been perfect, it is finally dying on me so I've been looking at the Y series, think I might have to get one this weekend. I notice you bought the $999 model, is there a difference other than the extra larger battery, win 7 pro, and larger hard drive?
@flach I'm glad to help. I had the same frustration after the Y was announced. No proper reviews anywhere. I'm surprised that there still aren't any reviews. There isn't any difference between the $799 and the $999 other than the extras you mentioned. I couldn't lived without the extended battery, so I would have paid extra just for that.
Thanks for posting this video. I'm thinking about getting one of Sony's new Y series notebooks. I have a question about the trackpad. I used a Sony SR series for a while and liked the trackpad -- surface was smooth, with no "plastic" or "glossy" overlay on top of the trackpad. But I know some Sony models have a "sticker" plastic or "glossy" trackpad. How is the one on the Y series?
@musicfan617 I know what you mean about the new trackpads and luckily, the Vaio Y has the smooth trackpad, not the plastic glossy kind that I hate. I also don't like the dimpled trackpads. The Vaio Y has the regular smooth kind.
Thanks for the reply. That's good news. I'm not a fan of the plastic glossy trackpads or the dimpled ones. It would have been a deal-breaker for me if the Vaio Y had either one of those. But I'm glad to know it's got the smooth trackpad. I might go out to shop for one this weekend. Thanks again for posting the video.
@knutsford The battery I inserted is the 8 hr one. The 12 hr one is the larger battery on the desk. Heat is fine as long as you don't sit it on the bed. Not sure why Sony laptops always generate heat on a soft surface, since my other laptops don't do this. The Noise from the fan isn't bad, but I can hear it. Not noisy, by any means, but I can tell when the fan is blowing.
@mymylu3 I thought the glossy screen would be a problem, but it's not. The display has good contrast and color. I usually only need to keep it on 80% brightness. I have no complaints at all.
Aaahh. I'm just getting more confused now. I'm reading semi-reviews of the S series on the notebookreview forums, and it seems like people are saying the s series has about the same battery life as the y with the standard battery. I'm just more confused now lol. And they're about the same price too, now I feel like the S series might be a better value for the money...I wish it came it black though.
@oldskoolhead96 I don't know about the S seriew having the same battery life. I've heard that the battery life for the S is around 6 hrs. Nonetheless, I wouldn't mind owning an S Series for graphics intensive apps, but I like the Y series for travel. I've been using it for the last two days in meetings and it's the first time I haven't had to plug in my laptop during meetings. I can use the Y all day for an 8 to 10 hr day without worrying about finding a plug. It's perfect.
@Sinochu I can get 8-10 hrs is possible out of the extended, but only if you keep the screen brightness low. I typically like the screen to be in the 80-90% brightness range, so I'm only seeing about 7-8 hrs with the extended. I also have a Sprint wireless modem plugged into the ExpressCard slot all the time, so I'm sure that impacts battery life as well.
can you let us know what the battery life is actually like with both the standard and the extended batteries? I'm really debating whether i should get this, if the battery life is as good as sony says, i could definitely use this for school, but I know they tend to stretch the facts lol. also, how good is it when you multitask, surf the web, watch videos, etc.? i'm not too knowledgeable about processors, but i know this one is a lesser one in order to improve battery life and portability.
@oldskoolhead96 I'm seeing about 4-5 hrs with the standard battery and 7-8 hrs with the extended battery under normal use and 60-70% brightness. It's not as good as Sony advertises, but it's acceptable. I'm sure I could stretch it out a bit more by turning off wifi and lowering the brightness settings. I'm just glad I purchased the $999 version that comes with both batteries included... It's nice to be able to swap them out as needed.
@oldskoolhead96 I've used Photoshop, Office, Dreamweaver and other stuff on it so far and no problems at all. It handles multitasking very, very well. I've had 9 apps open at one time and no issues whatsoever, so I'm pleasantly surprised. I've also watched hi-def videos on Hulu with photoshop and other stuff running in the background and there's no problem at all. I'm not a gamer, so I can't comment on how well it will run games, but I speed is definitely not an issue with this notebook.
Thanks! Yeah, I'm not too worried about about gaming either. I'm mainly looking for something that'll last well on a charge so I can use it in classes w/o worrying about where an outlet is and that's light and portable. It's also good to know it handles multitasking well. I was trying to figure whether I should go for the Y series or the S series (which I've only seen in Best Buy)...I'm thinking the battery life may make me go for the Y. Right now I have an NW150 that I'm gonna sell to a friend.
I was also looking at the Asus UL series, but after having a vaio, I don't know if I could ever have anything but a sony lol. I guess I'll be getting the Y series. Thanks.
The UL30VT was my first choice, but then the Y came out, so I decided to get the Y. The price difference is about $150 and I think the Y is a better buy because it has an ExpressCard slot and the two batteries. The UL is still a good choice, though.

@tim128lee The CW has better performance, but nothing beats the battery life of the Y. I literally NEVER take the power supply with me when I leave the house now. It's a relief not to think about losing power.

@gadgetfann how long does the battery last on word documenting, excel, browsing etc. and how fast is the processor because i hear it's a low ghz

@tim128lee i agree with gadgetfann...i just had my cw for almost 2 months now and it's really a nice looking and good perferming laptop. However the battery life is a little bit disappointing, but not that bad...

does this computer run slow or lag? the speed seems kind of slow (1.3 GHz). Thanks

@tim128lee No, surprisingly it doesn't run slow or lag. Processor speed doesn't seem to be a factor for any productivity software. I also use it for Photoshop.

Please, I would really appreciate it!

Hi, I've heard that you used Photoshop and Dreamweaver on the Y. I'm planning to buy a Y series, but not sure if it can handle AutoCAD (the reason I'm still hesitating). Not sure if you're familiar with AutoCAD. But...
Thanks
nartin86 2 years ago
@nartin86 Hi, using Photoshop and Dreamweaver are no problem on the Y. However, some PS image filters take longer to process. I don't use AutoCAD, so I can't comment on how the Y will handle...

killerzmoney47 2 years ago
Hey, just got the laptop today and there are a few issues I would like to address. First, the keys are pretty loud when you type fast on them. Louder than the ASUS UL's keyboard, which I thought was bad enough when compared to the VAIO Z, which has a soft, near silent sound.
AzNBoy1988 2 years ago
There's also a continous squeaking noise coming from the CPU. It is talked about on Sony's user reviews for the Y-series. I know for a fact that it is coming from the CPU and not the fan/HDD b/c I've owned a Dell, M1750, that had a similar problem. If you install a program called "RMClock", it'll suppress the squeak, but this method was not successful with the Sony.
Good laptop for the price($724 w/ student discount) but looks like I might be going back to a Z-series.
AzNBoy1988 2 years ago

It's surprisingly fast.
gadgetfann 2 years ago
how fast is the processor compare to other core 2 duo that's above 2.0 ghz?. As I know, the vaio y only has 1.30 ghz. This is why I'm still confuse about processors.
thanks very much

@PantheraLeo205 The more I use the Y, the more I appreciate it. The MacBP wasn't an option for me beause the battery can't be swapped out. I hate the idea of traveling and having to find a place to plug in. They Sony Y NEVER has to be plugged in when I'm on the go because I can simply swap the battery when one gets low. It also has an expresscard slot, which can be used to add a USB 3.0 port or a wireless modem, etc.
gadgetfann 2 years ago
why did you get the large battery? it already has 10 hours! ur just adding unnecessary weight for something that is used for portability.
lifematch 2 years ago
@lifematch The standard battery is rated at 8 hrs, the large battery is rated at 12 hrs. In "real-world" use, I'm seeing about 5 to 6 hrs with the standard battery and 7 to 8 hrs with the extended.
gadgetfann 2 years ago
Hey, I now have a vaio FZ series (that's 15,4 inch) . But I really like watching movies on my laptop, though it still needs to be suitable for travelling. I'm concerned with the screen of the Vaio Y, is it big enough to ENJOY movies? =S
bakkermaarten007 2 years ago

AzNBoy1988 2 years ago
@AzNBoy1988 Also, the Vaio Y is lukewarm at it's warmest if you put your hand near the fan vent. It isn't hot on the bottom at all... Not sure of the actual operating temp, but I have a Vaio SZ that almost always runs very warm to hot. The Vaio Y is very cool by comparison.
gadgetfann 2 years ago
@AzNBoy1988 The fan is always on on the Y. There is only a vent on left side; no fan on the right at all. The fan is quiet, but if you're in a silent room like an enclosed room where there is no noise at all and you listen for the fan, you can hear it. If you're not listening for the sound of the fan blowing, you definitely won't hear it. It's the quietest fan of any computer I've owned (and I have 7 Vaios currently), so don't worry that it's too loud.
gadgetfann 2 years ago
Thanks for the fast reply.
7 Vaios?
AzNBoy1988 2 years ago
Any of those 7 Vaio's happen to be a Vaio X11? I'm also interested in that but I read a few reviews stating that there was an actual sticker warning the owner that it could cause harm if placed on one's lap!
AzNBoy1988 2 years ago
@AzNBoy1988 I'm happy to help. I don't have the X. I've seen it at the SonyStyle store at the mall and it's an amazing computer. The weight/size make it perfect for travel. The Y is still a better buy to me, though.
gadgetfann 2 years ago
Get the compressed air and clean out the fan, be very careful not to blow too much air into it and damage the fan. (do not keep blowing air in for too long) 2 seconds, then let go, two seconds, then let go. Hope this will help lower the noise and computer getting way too hot.
zaval777 2 years ago
Zaval777, thank you for your advice. That was the first step I did when I noticed my fan pick up abnormally. Sprayed co2 into the vents in burst of every second. Went the extra step and dissembled it since it was out of warranty and no luck. I plan on going to the Sony Styles store and getting a quote on a trade-in value and purchase a Y-series! =)
AzNBoy1988 2 years ago
@PantheraLeo205 I dislike fan noise as well. The fan on the Vaio Y isn't noisy, but if you listen for it, you will hear it. I'm not sure if that helps. I wouldn't really call it "noise" because it's quiet, but you can tell that the fan is silently doing it's job when it's on.

Sorry to bother you again dude, just trying to do my research before I make a purchase in April. XD
I have another question about the battery, have you noticed a battery drain issue?
That is, when you turn off your computer and have the battery @100%, have you noticed the battery power being a bit less the next morning like at 95%?
Thanks for answering my question.

Can one make overclocking like the asus ul30?. TANKS
marcelodeargentina 2 years ago

Sinochu 2 years ago
@Sinochu You won't encounter any hiccups with these tasks. This is the Core 2 Duo and it handles productivity software and music playing with ease for me. I think you'd have to throw a lot more at it (i.e. video editing or heavy gameplay) to encounter any performance issues.
gadgetfann 2 years ago
That's good to hear... it would seem that the Sony VAIO Y-series is the way for a college student like me to go.
Disappointed w/ the battery life though.

nice vid .. i wish you added the bigger battery so we can see what it looks like !!!
i would like to know how long those the long battery last for and would you recommend this for studying and light entertainment ??
and how those the bigger battery effect weight and size ??
thanx in advance :-D
elkorhaly 2 years ago
@elkorhaly The bigger battery acts almost as a stand for the Vaio. It lifts the back of the Vaio Y about 1/2" from the desk. Battery life is ok. It isn't as stellar as I'd hoped. I'm sure better results are possible, but the extended battery is yielding about 6 to 7 hrs for me. Not quite as good as the 12 hrs advertised, but still ok and enough to get me through the work day. I don't feel like I have to carry a power supply with me anymore when I'm working away from the office.
gadgetfann 2 years ago

Because on the sony site there is only one that costs $1100 AUD.
thanks
tracuer63 2 years ago
@tracuer63 I'm not a gamer and don't run games on the Vaio Y. In my opinion, since this only has a 1.3Ghz CULV processor, I don't think gaming would be its strong point. The Y is likely best used for business applications and light graphics. I'm not familiar with the pricing model in Australia. In the US, the $999 version coms with 2 batteries, Windows 7 Professional and a 500GB drive, whereas the $799 model comes with 1 standard battery, Windows 7 Home Premium and a 320GB drive.
gadgetfann 2 years ago
This computer looks amazing! i checked out the specs and everything. one question is why the processor is only i think I read 1.73 GHz?
bardardo 2 years ago
@bardardo It's the CULV processor (consumer ultra-low voltage). These processors are meant to provide extra-long battery life rather than performance, thus the 12 hr battery life potential on this and the comparable Acer Timeline and ASUS UL models... The Vaio Y uses the 1.3GHz Core 2 Duo
gadgetfann 2 years ago
Thank you so much! Your comments in this thread are invaluable since there are no proper reviews of this laptop on the net. I've had a S150 for 6 years and it's been perfect, it is finally dying on me so I've been looking at the Y series, think I might have to get one this weekend. I notice you bought the $999 model, is there a difference other than the extra larger battery, win 7 pro, and larger hard drive?
flach 2 years ago

How is the one on the Y series?
musicfan617 2 years ago
@musicfan617 I know what you mean about the new trackpads and luckily, the Vaio Y has the smooth trackpad, not the plastic glossy kind that I hate. I also don't like the dimpled trackpads. The Vaio Y has the regular smooth kind.
gadgetfann 2 years ago
Thanks for the reply. That's good news. I'm not a fan of the plastic glossy trackpads or the dimpled ones. It would have been a deal-breaker for me if the Vaio Y had either one of those. But I'm glad to know it's got the smooth trackpad. I might go out to shop for one this weekend. Thanks again for posting the video.

Is the battery you inserted in the video the 12hr one? How's the heat and noise level?
knutsford 2 years ago
@knutsford The battery I inserted is the 8 hr one. The 12 hr one is the larger battery on the desk. Heat is fine as long as you don't sit it on the bed. Not sure why Sony laptops always generate heat on a soft surface, since my other laptops don't do this. The Noise from the fan isn't bad, but I can hear it. Not noisy, by any means, but I can tell when the fan is blowing.
gadgetfann 2 years ago
Is the display good ?
mymylu3 2 years ago
@mymylu3 I thought the glossy screen would be a problem, but it's not. The display has good contrast and color. I usually only need to keep it on 80% brightness. I have no complaints at all.
gadgetfann 2 years ago
Aaahh. I'm just getting more confused now. I'm reading semi-reviews of the S series on the notebookreview forums, and it seems like people are saying the s series has about the same battery life as the y with the standard battery. I'm just more confused now lol. And they're about the same price too, now I feel like the S series might be a better value for the money...I wish it came it black though.
oldskoolhead96 2 years ago
@oldskoolhead96 I don't know about the S seriew having the same battery life. I've heard that the battery life for the S is around 6 hrs. Nonetheless, I wouldn't mind owning an S Series for graphics intensive apps, but I like the Y series for travel. I've been using it for the last two days in meetings and it's the first time I haven't had to plug in my laptop during meetings. I can use the Y all day for an 8 to 10 hr day without worrying about finding a plug. It's perfect.
gadgetfann 2 years ago
@gadgetfann So your battery life has actually been 8-10 hours, that's great. But only w/ the extended battery right?
I read Laptopmag's review and their standard battery life is 6 hours.
Sinochu 2 years ago
@Sinochu I can get 8-10 hrs is possible out of the extended, but only if you keep the screen brightness low. I typically like the screen to be in the 80-90% brightness range, so I'm only seeing about 7-8 hrs with the extended. I also have a Sprint wireless modem plugged into the ExpressCard slot all the time, so I'm sure that impacts battery life as well.
gadgetfann 2 years ago
can you let us know what the battery life is actually like with both the standard and the extended batteries? I'm really debating whether i should get this, if the battery life is as good as sony says, i could definitely use this for school, but I know they tend to stretch the facts lol. also, how good is it when you multitask, surf the web, watch videos, etc.? i'm not too knowledgeable about processors, but i know this one is a lesser one in order to improve battery life and portability.
oldskoolhead96 2 years ago
@oldskoolhead96 I'm seeing about 4-5 hrs with the standard battery and 7-8 hrs with the extended battery under normal use and 60-70% brightness. It's not as good as Sony advertises, but it's acceptable. I'm sure I could stretch it out a bit more by turning off wifi and lowering the brightness settings. I'm just glad I purchased the $999 version that comes with both batteries included... It's nice to be able to swap them out as needed.
gadgetfann 2 years ago
@oldskoolhead96 I've used Photoshop, Office, Dreamweaver and other stuff on it so far and no problems at all. It handles multitasking very, very well. I've had 9 apps open at one time and no issues whatsoever, so I'm pleasantly surprised. I've also watched hi-def videos on Hulu with photoshop and other stuff running in the background and there's no problem at all. I'm not a gamer, so I can't comment on how well it will run games, but I speed is definitely not an issue with this notebook.
gadgetfann 2 years ago
Right now I have an NW150 that I'm gonna sell to a friend.
oldskoolhead96 2 years ago
I was also looking at the Asus UL series, but after having a vaio, I don't know if I could ever have anything but a sony lol. I guess I'll be getting the Y series. Thanks.
oldskoolhead96 2 years ago
The UL30VT was my first choice, but then the Y came out, so I decided to get the Y. The price difference is about $150 and I think the Y is a better buy because it has an ExpressCard slot and the two batteries. The UL is still a good choice, though.
