I saw them in Largo, Maryland - Dallas, TX and ended up in New York at Madison Square Garden. 3 weeks...3 Zep concerts. I still have the ticket stubs. I also saw Robert Plant a few times when he was solo in the '80's.
Page & Plant and the band obviously know and are aware of the partly huge cultural influence the Celts left in Germany. They lived together with the Germanic tribes in relative peace until Julius Caesar came and played them off against each other. The Bavarian dialect e.g. is as much influenced by Celtic intonations like the "Romanic" French.
1. There is a sponsored ad for "Ron Paul on gold and silver." One presumes it's about buying your way off death row?... 2. On a more serious note, what do people think -- did this benefit from the mandolin and the banjo as in the recorded version on III, or is this "cleaner" version -- well, more powerful?... Need help deciding. Is there a bootleg of the lineup with Bonzo and JPJ playing this and Page on guitar only?
Robert Plant is one of the greatest rock frontmen ever!!! I can't say he's THE greatest because the late Freddie Mercury and Mick Jagger are also among the best.
@thedyermaker1 AHHAHA that's messed up he looks like susan boyle here lol i think its just the time of this "reunion" with quotes because of the exception of someone very important, he looks normal now
This is somewhere between "superb" and "fing brilliant" -- and reminds us all, what a gifted arranger Page is. How did he decide to add mandolin and banjo to this? -- given how good it sounds just with guitar -- a mystery, but moved the original to the realm of the transcendent.
@TheDanteCobain May not be worth getting rid of her just for that., on the good side that means she may be too young to know who he is... and a late 40's man wouldn't mind a woman that was too young to know who is is.. :)
@TheDanteCobain ...single because you were disgusted by her lack of knowledge or single because after you enlightened her she went and shagged Robert Plant?
The BarnesFarm....the fact that you remember that then is commendable in it's own right! That much spliff and I wouldn't be able to find my PC, nevermind my ride home!? Good on ya!
Also i can't even begin to describe how hard it is to play this song with the pace that plant plays it with here. His touch is absolutely astounding and staggering.
Led zeppelin and nirvana both had heavy influences from leadbelly, not surprisingly they were the two best bands to come out since the 70's. In particular cobain and plant both saw leadbelly as a genius.
Great to hear Robert giving credit to the origin of the Scots/English ballad (about a maiden at the "gallows tree") which turned into a black american folk song - and then via Zep into a rock song.
a song made by black people. in this case the kind of song expressing the sorrow of seeing the type of atrocity committed by anyone who goes around hanging another person. especially when the person is someone you know and having to worry that some day it may be you. the comment is not meant to be racist.
@MegaLuigiv I didn't say the comment was racist; I said it was "ignorant." Songs are performed by black artists, in this case Gallows Pole. The fact that Leadbelly performed it does not turn it into a "black song" but rather a reinterpreted folk song (of dubious origin). Listen, I'm not trying to make a huge issue out of this; I just think that Plant is woefully out of touch with black artists, which is ironic considering how much of their work he has, um, "borrowed" from over the years.
@LedLass Regardless of whether he still has his voice or not, isn't fairly obvious after all this time that Pagey just isn't inspired to do anything without Plant by his side?
@rodentcafeteria Yes, I agree. Zeppelin was Page's baby; he had everything he wanted and needed to inspire him in that band, including, unfortunately, Plant. I only say "unfortunately" because, as you implied, none of the remaining members of Zep will ever tour again unless Plant is among them, and Plant's too busy doing his own thing to be bothered. (Actually, I think it's more because, sadly, he just can't sing most of those songs anymore.) Ah well...we can always hope, yes? :-)
@LedLass Actually, I think there's more to it than just a lack of vocal power, because songs can be re-worked or the key lowered to accommodate for that. Do you really want to see a 60-year-old man attempting to re-create an image he had nearly 40 years ago? Wheezing his way through another chorus of "Whole Lotta Love"? Plant turned down millions to do a re-union tour, so obviously money isn't an issue for him. He's simply moved on and I respect him for that.
@rodentcafeteria When I said Plant can't sing most of those songs anymore, I wasn't referring to the single fact that his voice has changed dramatically but to all the reasons, including image, etc. No, I was thinking more along the lines of them doing stuff like what's on No Quarter but with Jonesy this time around. And I would respect him for "moving on" if he truly had done that, i.e., if he would stop including a set of Zeppelin songs in every tour (and butchering them in the process).
@LedLass Robert Plant's voice may have diminished, but his "mystic" is very much intact. Tell me, how can one butcher their own work? After all, he did co-write nearly all Zep tunes and is free to interpret them any way he pleases. Perhaps this is the way he intended for those songs to be played were it not for Page's Les Paul and Marshall amps. Jimmy may own the Zeppelin name, but the Zeppelin songs belong to both Jimmy and Robert.
@rodentcafeteria How can one butcher their own work, you ask? For a perfect example, go and listen to Plant's version of Houses of the Holy (which is here on You Tube somewhere), and you'll understand what I'm talking about. Just because one CAN ("...reinterpret...") doesn't always mean one SHOULD.
1st of March is Justin Bieber's birthday. This little roach has been infecting the whole world. Because of him, the world of rock is extincting.
So on his birthday, we all will go to his "Baby" official video and push the dislike button so that the 'dislike' bar becomes 10 times bigger than the 'like' bar.
If you are a metal fan, join with me and thumbs up me, copy-paste this message to all rock videos. We have three months to unite and fight against the duce
I think Page told Plants drummer to not worry about even attempting what Bonham did with the rhythm on this tune. JHB added a visceral pulse that balanced the song. Good version, even still.
@revognah2 God it's like nobody posting here knows anything about Zep!!! You're the second person to not get it! First..Page is massive into black magic and Alister Crowely (read any Zep biography)..so that was he comes from the darkness...allthough it was meant to be taken as an in joke. Secondly listen to the song 'No Quarter' there's a line in that song..."Walking side by side with death, the devil mocks their every step".....Any Zep fan would just nod and smile...!
@1THETRUTH10 Sorry, but *you're* the one who doesn't know your Zep history. Jimmy Page was long past his Alister Cowley phase by this time, just as he was long free of heroin..
And the lyrics from No Quarter: this song, like the Immigrant Song, is about the Viking invasions of the British Isles. The line you refer to is about the hell of that war.
If you don't know what "no quarter" means, in the context of medieval warfare .... well, Google is your friend.
@LeoAsc Ok u clearly are a bit stupid.......when did I ever mention what the song No Quarter was about eh?? And Page has a history of being into black magic........when I went to see them in Birmingham rumors were rife that Page had actually sacraficed a baby backstage hours before the gig!

they came on stage at 6:00pm with the sun going down behind the stage. the city of tampa turned the power to the stadium off at 12:20am. we sat in the stands until daylight. it was 1:00pm before we got out of the parking lot. interstate 75 stopped in tampa. the sunshine skyway 2 lanes north & north & south.there was over 200,000 people inside & in the parking lots. highway 41was 4lanes highway 301 was 2. gas stations ran out of gas. cars broke down blocked the road.

I've seen two Zep tours around the same time and this story is either fishy or he was perceptually distorted. I think he still is.

Their best songs are the old blues tunes. Such as Babe I'm gonna leave you and when the levee breaks.
