  • I was about 9 or 10 when this song came out. Mind, I didn't pay a lot of attention to the lyrics at that time. All I know is that the music for some reason reminded me of pictures I'd seen of the L.A. skyline at night. In 2007, I went to Griffith Observatory at night and looked out over the lights of the city and was reminded of those pictures from so long ago...and this song!

  • Marilyn has one of the most beautiful, recognizable voices ever.I love this so much, heard it in Walgreens of all places and had to come home and play it! ♥♥ Perfect Valentine Song! ♥♥ I just realized this song is 41 years old! I had my son in 1971 when this was out!~♥♥

  • best song they ever did. Marilyn has the voice of an angel.

  • Both voices are GREAT! Both voices are instruments of the CREATOR!

  • What a song! Marilyn's vocal, the bass and horns are perfect.

  • @TheDziglinski I love her voice - love them all. They're great!!

  • truely incredible...nothing today compares! takes me to a higher plane of existance. Thanks 5th Dimension and marilyn!

  • My parents use to listen to this. I was so hooked... I can lost in youtube just following different videos. one video leads to another great old tune..and so on...and so on.

  • the best

  • A hauntingly beautiful song I love listening to...especially when I'm with my lady on a winter night where the moon is casting shadows on the snow. I first heard this song one moonlit winter night on KWKI Radio in Kansas City. Marilyns voice was so mysteriously dark and beautiful.

  • When I hear this and some of the other songs from that era, I get all sappy and start missing that time in my life, Is there something wrong with me or do alot of other people appreciate those years compared to the present decade we're in right now??, No other decade ever came close to the 70's IMHO.

  • @Majikart

Dear Majikart, Nostalia like this song makes us appreciate the best things we have experienced in life. No - there is nothing wrong with you ! Music back then was written with far better lyricists and composers then much of today. I was a young helicopter pilot in Vietnam in 1970-72 and even though I was in a terrible place, I always had this music, this song with me and I carried memories of the best things of America.

  • Seeing The 5th Dimension was my first concert experience. They will always hold a special place in my heart.

  • Beautiful song-- helped me get thru a terrible break-up in early '72, but now brings back the good memories of '71!!

  • A real and talented vocalist

  • I want to encase it in gold.

  • Sexy, passionate, powerful singing at it's best!

  • Delightfully twisted lyrics.

And consumate production by Bones Howe.

  • Nothing but CLASS.

THANK YOU GOD FOR CREATING BEAUTIFUL MUSIC.

    thx for post.

    Anthony Figgiani.

  • @afiggiani1558 what about the music today? Like the rubbish lady gaga? LOL

  • After listening to all of their songs tonight -- I'd bet there's no song that they couldn't sing and make better. Loved them then-Love them now. No wonder my parents bought their "LP's" before I could. God Bless them both. My dad in striped bell bottoms & flowered shirt; mom in short skirts & knee high boots -What a pair to have as parents. What a Group to bring back good times in my 54th year of life.

  • MASTERPIECE....

  • @mokacode Sounds like one to me also.

  • Wow. What a wonderful treat. The Fifth Dimension is one of the most underrated groups ever. They never "fit" into any one genre - they were "pop" but not white, so... Shame. Marillyn McCoo could blow!

  • A very BIG thank you, PalmBeach for posting this song!!! When I was a little girl, my mom would play this song over and over and we just loved it!! :)

  • tremondous recording and very inspiring song. one can not get that from todays music. i am glad this was recorded and giving time on the radio back in 1971. this song tells a very far moving idea of love. thank you palm beach1028 for this entry

  • This is beautiful. I actually heard Diana's version first and I fell hard. But Marilyn McCoo has her FADED on this version! The 5th Dimension wins!

  • A phenomenal song sung by a spectacular singer. Thank you to both Dorothea Joyce and Marilyn McCoo.

  • my all time favorite song....and I was fortunate enough to meet my faves marilyn and Billy. (some time after they performed that night, I by luck, saw them go into the hotel restaurant. I hurridly got my album (yes, my album) out of the car and went up to them to get their autograph. they were both tired from performing but VERY gracious to me and I will never forget it....

  • I remember it well....this song was introduced on "the Ed Sullivan Show". I couldn't get the song out of my mind....its truly among the best songs and performances I have ever heard

  • wowww

  • best ever song

  • Takes Me straight back to the Spring of 1971, What a wonderful time that was; This song captures the spirit of that time, Thank You for posting it.

  • @Majikart It most certainly does.

  • Thanx for collecting the 'Love Lines, Angles and Rhymes. APB

  • what a great song.....takes me back to a much simpler life

  • Pop music was so much wiser then. Who stole our minds?

  • What incredilbe songs. Brings back some really great memories of how great the music was back in the day as well as great memories of the times. Thanks so much for sharing.

  • I WAS ABOUT 4 YEARS OLD WHEN THIS SONG WAS ON THE RADIO, I STILL REMEMBER, GOSH, IT TOOK ME BACK. ALWAYS LOVED THE 5TH DIMENSION

  • Comment removed

  • not a huge hit, but this is very favorite fifth dimension song.

  • What a pretty song - telling that love story with exceptional vocals and music. This song will always be close to my heart as it came out when I was in high school. The 5th Dimension was a very talented but slightly underrated group. Marilyn McCoo was an excellent vocalist.

  • @kariebeez Yep...And she still is.

  • I had this - The Fifth Dimension was a tremendous group and had a profound impact on everyone. I loved virtually everything they did; however, this was a personal favorite. Just everything about it is perfection. The words they put together with that terrific sound they had. Wow. Thank you for the post.

  • diana does a good job on this song.but nobody can touch marylin this is her song with no doubt.

  • You gotta listen to Diana Ross' (1970) It wasn't released till 2002, but Diana tears it up (in a good way)

  • This song is one of my favorites.

  • Seden7, I agree with you wholeheartedly but would also say that we probably took the great music from that era for granted and only now can we see that in comparison to todays artists groups such as fifth dimension are head and shoulders above. Marilyn is a one of a kind angel, we are so lucky to have her beautiful voice forever.

  • @MrAbstractdesign I agree with you also, I was fortunate to be in my teen years in the 1970's, I was 15 when this song came out and this song brings alot of that back.

  • diana ross was pathetic

  • hater

  • Very sexy and powerful vocal delivery on this song!

  • IMHO, Diana Ross did a nice job on this song, but not as good as Marilyn.

  • Did Jimmy Webb write this?

  • @MotownConnoisseur30 No, actually it was written by Dorothea Joyce. The confusion is understandable, given that Webb wrote some of their other tunes.

  • i went to see the song this movie was in,,didnt like either

  • this one makes for an excellent warmup song for any vocalist. full range inflections.

  • I had the 45rpm single of this song back in the day. Still think it is a cool song.

  • PalmBeach28, This song, sung by Marilyn McCoo of the 5th dimension is so Beautiful, an accurate description of Love, Complex ,and mathematical, even... It is exquisite!

    And I Love it!

Thank you so much for posting a phenomenal song and its singer. She also loved singing this challenging song. - penny

  • Dorothea! Beautiful!

  • Yes, I do love this song and 5th Dimension!

  • oh dear graygull. to go back to 1971, and in 8th grade.when life was free. no rent no car or ins payments. food was free. oh well.

  • @peteboy1113 good call, I too remember this song, do you agree with me that it reminds you of April of that year?

  • it sure does, i was in the 8th grade. kjhs- waltham mass. i was 14.

  • this song to me is a forgotten -45-. from 1971. it got to only 28, why. i love it. its a good song.

  • Yes Dorothea, you wrote a great song and it was sung by one of the best singers of popular music. Marilyn's vocal on this tune is superb.

  • Dorothea, this is one of the most amazing songs ever written. It has given me goosebumps every single time I've heard it since it came out in 1971. THANK YOU.

  • kriss i was in the 8th grade and a groooovinn.now i am 150lbs more and not a moovin or a groovin so much anymore.anyway, i love this song too.

  • I remember buying this album when it was released and listening to this song over... and over... and over..... It really knocked me out that a woman that beautiful could sing that good.

  • I said it once and I'll say it again, this is one of the most underated groups of all time. It's now in my more MATURE years that I see the true artistry of these fantastic singers and fantastic people!!!

  • @seden7 Ain't that the truth!

  • @seden7 They captured the spirit and feeling of that time in our lives, Sadly, They don't do that anymore, So few people in the industry knew how wonderful it was back there.

  • @seden7 I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that thinks this. My humble opion, this particular song is one of the most beatiful, mysterious, and mystical songs I've ever head, bar none.

  • OMG, I remember this song, but don't think I EVER knew it was titled this? Holy smokes!! Good song!

  • Thank you so much for acknowledging my song.

    Blessings,

    Dorothea Joyce

  • You're quite welcome, dorotheajoyce.

    Proud Kansan

  • WOW!!! Thanks for coming in and posting with us. It really is an AWESOME song.

  • @dorotheajoyce Ms Joyce, I am truly humbled to be in your cyber-presence! I used to work in radio. Believe me when I say that this is not only one of my personal favorites, but speaking as a musician, myself, it's beyond doubt one of the finest crafted pieces of music I've ever heard. No hyperbole, ma'am.

  • Thanks PalBeach1028 for posting this great and gorgeous song with a very diferent sound than most of their hits. Quiet, intense, thoughtful, and building to a climax like ...well you know--thanks so much for posting this gem.

  • This song.., WOW, WOW, and WOW.., what more can I say?!?

  • Thank you for posting these great songs by The 5th Dimension and The Friends of Distinction. I had the pleasure of meeting the writer of this song Dorothea Joyce in the late 70s. This top 20 hit was not on the "Portrait" lp. It was the the title song on the lp that followed.

  • Wow, I don't know how I screwed that up, especially since I got the album cover correct.

    :o)

    Thanks for your correction.

  • Thanks so much I love this song!

  • they are fantastic, period. McCoo, beautiful singing, awesome musicians, great backup singing, harmonies, everything...

  • april 1971. i was in the 8th grade. i always liked this song. thanks for playing this oldie but goodie.

  • Mid 70's, back in my apt., after breaking up with my 'main squeeze', listening to this song over and over, and over, til dawn. Felt so bad, and I was the one that broke up with her. Evokes such memories, feelings, of 'lines, angles, and rhymes, of past loves and days gone by.

  • One of the most Beautiful songs about

Love, sung by Marilyn McCoo. The Lyrics

are most complex & at once exemplary of

    Love...Need...Want... Loveshine - Penny

  • i agree

  • The 5th Dimension, producer Bones Howe, The Wrecking Crew studio musicians--WOW--now THAT'S style!

  • Comment removed

  • TY sooooo very much PalmBeach1028. This song plays in my head @ any given time; somethings I don't wanna see from "...back then..."... still, I'm extremely appreciative of this track. Thanx

  • Wasn't there a pull out cardboard of The

5th Dimension from this album? I believe there was one as well from the Stoned Soul Picnic album.

  • @bearfed Actually, it was a detachable (perforated) back flap in the shape of a big 5, with miniature inset photos of the group repeated all over it. Stoned Soul picnic, in certain issues, came with an insert that folded around the front cover. It had lyrics to all the songs.

  • I remember listening to this song late at night on my am transistor radio as a kid. Haunting!

  • One of the vest vocal groups EVER

  • Careful listening to the vocals in this song reveals Marilyn McCoo Davis as having one of the finest voices of that era...Excellent Song!!!...Thanks for the post...:)

  • but; do not overlook Florence LaRue's great voice. Listen to Florence sing lead on THIS IS YOUR LIFE also from the Portrait album. Marilyn & Florence's voices complemented each other so well.

  • Just listened to it...No Doubt!...These women and, for that matter, the whole band possessed some of the finest vocals and harmonies...Ever!
