Probably the best pop singles band ever. Excellent songs from Donna through to Godley & Creme,s brilliant singles Under Your Thumb and Wedding Bells. Loved them when i was a kid

I was living in England when this song came out. I was an avid TOTP fan and this song blew me away. When we returned to the U.S. that same year the record was impossible to find. For years I tried to find it. When I finally did, listening to it again after all those years was like being transported back in time - seriously - I would watch this in my parent's room on their TV - it was 1976, I was 13 years old. Thank God it's possible to find these hidden gems in mp3 versions!!
I always thought it was a daydream based on the many advertising posters of the time saying things like I'm (name), Fly Me. I remember one in Bedford (UK) where I lived, past it on my way to school by the railway bridge on Kempston Road. She came out of the poster and welcomed me aboard. The girls in the posters were of course all good-looking. He imagines her as Ursula Andress in Dr No, giving him the kiss of life. He extends the daydream into the song.

Always thought it was about an air hostess killed in a plane crash after heroically saving his life which seemed poignant in 1976 as there were terrible plane crashes around that time.
@psi4rick A form of Barbiturate, a recreational drug widely used in the 60s and 70s. Kids from the 80s and 90s thought they invented drugs, nahh , we had them long before that, we just didn't become reliant on them lol.
Had the honour of seeing them playing " at home" the Free Trade Hall, Manchester 75 supporting Original Soundtrack, what a fantastic band, four singer songwriters and multi instumentalsts who just worked together so well, with clever, intelligent lyrics and masterful playing (back then they brought an extra drummer so Kevin could do other stuff), finished with a looooong version of Rubber Bullets.
@Incudius couldnt have put better myself im 45 & so glad to have grown up with these bands &we were spoilt with 70s & 80s music ive got 4 grown up kids all working my 2 lads 27 & 23 love all the music & they are musicians i know there are some decent artists knocking round but you cannot ever beat the sounds i grew up to & this song im mandy fly me is awesome & haunting eric stewart sings it beautifully
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SONG!! one of the first I ever heard to be honest and after 20+ years i got to see it played live this year and it was incredible. And I got to tell that to the band after the show! Incredible!
These guys were very very stoned!!! Apart from this; 10 cc was such a creative group and terribly underrated in music history. Few groups could create this eclectic sound ad so innovative and charming; perfect music to relax and disconnect from this world for a little while
I agree completely EvilSirJasper, music is just so evocative.1976 Dear god!!What a year.So much sex,so much great drugs(which I now council my kids about),so much great fucking music.Thank God for U tube.It allows us to re-live it.
sheere brilliance we were spoilt with the great bands and music of 70s and 80s i hate what my kids call music rap all it is is talking in ryme over a goog song like p diddy "my best friend" sailing christopher cross and these boy bands omg they havent got a clue sad sacs isnt in it like jedwood or is it dead wood
you are so rite the 70s to 80s was a good time for music the music menu.. was abundent you chose what you wanted , i loved 10cc ,david bowie, daved essex what a mixture like a 3 corse meal starter mane and pudding . the choice was yours music then was never same eee always something new
I remember living in England when this incredible song came out. Heard it on 'Top of the Pops' - early summer of 1976 when we (me and my parents) moved back to the U.S. I found it to be very melacholy ... I had finally begun to fit in with my English friends and had a crush on an English boy, Graham. Just when I felt like I belonged I was uprooted again. This song was very, very significant and did indeed, "struck a chord."
The power of music to instantly transport you back is amazing, in this case to the long, hot summer of '76 (in the UK at least) and a host of brilliant memories, old pals etc, and brilliant times. What a great time to be young but not too young to enjoy it. This song sticks in the mind from then for being so good. I'd started to realise they were a top band anyway after already hearing a few decent hits (Wall St Shuffle etc) but when I heard this one I was totally convinced.
@custer1968 Yes indeed; I've got the impression they wanted to do something in the line of Mc Cartney's "Band on the run", with the guitar break at 2'10"... Am I wrong?
What a brilliant song. They don't write them like that any more. It was a take on Pan Am's adverts in the 1970s where their air hostesses would come on screen and say 'I'm Mandy/Mary/ etc. Fly me...'
Boy I don't know, after listening to this a thousand times, I think this song is basically about "him" surviving a plane crash and "her" never being found. As "she" walks on the water - suggesting "she" was on her path to heaven... Anyone...The sharks coming to get "him"...
i just fall in love with the guitar break at 2:08, reminds me of mike oldfield
