It's never actually explained. The best we can guess is that in the 'secret ending' of DMC3, when Vergil attacks Mundus head on, his resulting defeat is what broke Yamato. Apparently the only way to damage such a weapon is to destroy the WIELDER first.

most likely it seems Vergil Spirit has taken over nero, most likely taken over his arm, ( lol. just like Metal Gear Solid 2 Liqiud takes over ocelot) but continuing on I've Read Before Nero Was By a Hell Gate And A Spirit Approuched him, he was striked by that spirit, that spirit was Vergil or Nelo Angelo, That's how only That Arm can use the Yamato Along With Dante, Quote"Give Me More Power" Didn't Vergil Say all he Want Was power, Will now nero's Saying it...

I think that tha Yamato broke cause of Agnus's shity respect for tha weapon, he proboly jus used it ta power tha Hell gate and that could've made weak cause of tha huge energy it gave, therefore it lost its power and broke, but thats jus a guess so i don't really know. I am glad that Vergil's back, Nero reminds me of him when he's angry and he quotes Vergil sometimes like "Blast" "Crash" "You're Goin Down".

I still think Nero is Vergil's son, making Dante his uncle. It explains why Vergils DT is in Nero, and why Dante won't kill Nero... and possibly the reason Nero could resurrect Yamato.

so you can see Nero is not another son of Sparda, nor a son of Vergil. When Vergil lost to Mundus in Dmc3, he transformed him into Nelo Angelo, enslaving Vergil's soul. In Dmc1, Dante fights and destroys Nelo Angelo, thus freeing Vergil's soul

here's Nero's story: Nero made a prayer to have more power to protect Kyrie. Vergil/Nelo Angelo heard his prayer and Vergil's soul rested inside Nero, creating Nero's demon arm, which said was Vergil's arm (probably how he can wield Yamato). In the video, you can tell its Vergil because thats Vergil in his demon form behind him i believe, and he says that since he got the arm, he heard a voice saying they needed more power, and if any of you've seen DMC3, Vergil's goal was to have more power

I think that Nero is Virgils son. Yamato comes alive while Nero is being attacked. Thus answering how he has Spardas blood in him. It also seems that Virgils spirit hovers over him in DT mode. He just seems too young to be Spardas son. Thats why Uncle Dante "had his reasons for helping" at the end of the game. Just a theory though.
