I can see in the video many amazing photo oportunities, like two people with full bags of groceries while a homeless person is looking for food in the garbage... But these nerds will never shoot it because theyre too busy talking about "not too wide enough" lenses and scaring people with huge guide numbered flashes...
I also shoot with these guys. First of all, how can you judge how they shoot just watching a 4:37 video? I can assure you they are just hanging out shooting the shit here, that's it. (obviously) The guy with the flash rarely uses it, he just gets bored and switches things up. For an older man hes got more energy and zip than most 20yr olds. He walks the streets of Boston almost daily, with authority, like he owns them. He is a freakin maniac once he gets going......
Have you ever seen Bruce Gilden's stuff? King of daytime flash... gets some incredible effects. Don't be so narrow minded regarding gear. Also, these guys look like they've been "caught" by a friend hanging out after a day of shooting. "Dressed like from another age"? These guys look like they're middle aged and beyond... you expect them to wear hip hop gear? Or backward baseball caps?
Agreed. It's more about how the camera is used than which camera is being used. RFs have several advantages over DSLRs for this kind of work but it's better to use the DSLR you can afford than to not take street shots because you can't afford the "ideal" camera! (If you know what you're doing, that is!)
I agree with you it should be a rangefinder, I don't agree with you about the $5,000.00 pieces of paper you have to lay out in order to buy a Leica, Bessa or whatever, the REAL difference is not the camera but the guy behind it!
A canon P costs 200 and a decent LTM another 1 or 2 hundred. Who said anything about Leica? Oh, and a Bessa R2 is only $539. 1000$? Exaggerate some more. Please.
It's funny how these guys are bullshitting and there's all this action going on that they're missing. They're too into "this lens isn't wide enough" etc. and ignoring what's going on. Attention aspiring street shooters: this is NOT how to do it.
There were photos all over the place, but these guys were too busy with each other to notice them. Just observe. Do a YouTube search for Garry Winogrand or Mark Mermelstein and see how they walk around with their cameras in similar situations.
bwworld) Give these lad's a break. Photography is not about image. What camera looks good on you. A true photographer understands that these men are brought out together in the name of photography. Take some photos, have a chat about it and clearly its a day out. You mention professionals well! to these guys its just a fun hobby and you should be encourging their photography rather than condemning it.
I have no problem with using cameras as a social prop, which I agree is what they're doing and they're clearly having a good time. But it's misleading therefore to identify this as having anything to do with street photography. For those of us who are scouring YouTube for videos that actually are relevant to our interest in street photography, this was a waste of time.
1:38--A guy walks by with a cup of coffee. Right behind him is a woman with a seeing eye dog. Guy with camera in hand is looking right at them, doesn't shoot!
bwworld,2/2....For 1) i wouldnt shoot a blind person unless it was for more than just taking a photo of a blind person. 2) The photographer might not have seen that photo that 'caught your eye'. If i was there 1st) i be alone, 2nd) if i was to take anything out of that scene. It would be a b&w social documentry photo of the 'man in bin' 0-1min. And i guess a monopod down knee high, slow shutter, pedestrians walking pass and making use of the strong lines on stree
Awkward.

stopped watching right there...

kpac) What would you know.
travelphotographer 4 years ago
street photographers should be equipped with one camera: a rangefinder, no flash.
Preferably a Leica, but a Bessa will do also.
kpac0 4 years ago
kpac) Whatever about the equipment. There is no set rule what type of camera one should use. What if the flash was to get rid of shadows?

Bessa costs about 1000$ with lens, so it isnt so expensive :)

(By the way, an M4 is around the same price)
