Cruise O'Brien was the most intelligent man ever to grace the current affairs stage in modern Ireland. His was a voice that transcended the jingoism of both the nationalists and the unionists.
It's important to remember that he was also married to one of the major irish-language poets of the time, Máire Mac an tSaoi. He opposed the Irish language not in and of itself, but because of the fact that it was being hijacked in the public sphere by political agenda.
@SnamhDaEan He was also a liar and a coward. As for 'hijacking' of the Irish language by nationalism, he would have done well to remember the legacy of men such as Richard Kane (a Belfast Orangeman wholived until the late 19th century), and David O'Morchoe, a major-general in the British army (still alive and kicking). What do both of these men have in common? A big interest in and support for the Irish language.
Goddamn fucking english culture-murderers! The Celts have suffered enough, and they were betrayed by their own! I am ashamed to have german blood in me, they with a history of crimes against culture.

Conor Cruise O'Brien died recently. He won't be missed here in Ireland. A disgrace was he to the people of Ireland.
