Red wasn't born in 1880, that's when the game's story takes place. Red didn't run in a gang. John was the son of a scotsman and a whore who both died at different times when John was still a young kid, and he was raised by a gang of outlaws. Red's parents, who were neither Scottish nor whores, were killed during the same night when Red was a teen and he took up bounty hunting to get by and search for the people who killed his parents.

John wasn't a bounty hunter at all, never was, he was only forced by the government to hunt down and kill his old companions, to do the government's dirty work, or he wouldn't have gotten his wife and son back. He was only hated by the government for being a murdering and stealing outlaw, if Red was ever hunted he was wanted solely for killing the corrupt governor.

The facts really do seem to add up when you fuck them up.

So Red Dead Redemption has a very different feeling to it. I would consider it a sequel because of a brief reference to Red Dead Revolver near the end of the game. I do hope they come out with another sequel, they'll probably have to. They set themselves up for it and now they created something entirely new and unique. No other developer has made a game quite like Red Dead Redemption.
