I hadn't heard of an Axolotl until I read the excellent book, "The ancestor's tale " by Richard Dawkins. In the chapter 'Axolotl's tale' he explains more about neoteny or progenesis, the evolutionary consequence of which is called paedomorphosis. The axolotl is just an extreme among salamanders. Many species seem to be , to some extent, paedomorphic, others do other heterochronically interesting things. Axolotls treated with thyroxine lose their gills and become dry land salamanders.

its so adorable where can you get them? are they hard to take care of? are they in the us? in california? then my friend canget one! she wants one so bad! plz respond!
I have a young axolotl and am considering keeping another, for company's sake, but i've always been told they can be really aggressive to each other, is this nonsense?
It is nonsense. They can accidentally bite each other in search for food and injure each other badly, ripping a foot off or something like that, but they grow back, only put the injured one in an extra box and change the water every day to keep infections away. They are not aggressive, mostly it´s accidents. Just make sure they are all the same size, otherwise one could literally end up as food.
Oh no, the frog´s claws could injure the sensitive skin of the axolotl badly, even if the frog just swims past the axolotl and accidentally hits it. I wouldn´t try to keep them together, plus the frogs prefer higher temperatures which are too high for axolotls.
It doesn´t matter, but you can keep a male and female, just leave the spawn in the tank, they will eat it, you don´t have to raise babies! I would always keep a male and female, not only to have the fun of their mating behaviour which looks really funny, but also to avoid that the female can´t get rid of her spawn and might get an infection. I don´t breed them anymore, just leave the spawn.
thank you so much for replying so quickly, and thank you for the great advice i shell get a boy and a girl, even if a baby survives three mouths wont be THAT hard to feed lol
Actually you should keep axolotls on their own. They can be very aggressive and will often bite off eachothers limbs. Although they have the ability to regrow their own limbs, would you really want to put them through it in the first place? The regrown limbs are never the same as the original.
I have kept 4 of them together for years and this never happened. I know it can happen, but it´s not because they are aggressive. They are not aggressive at all, it´s because they can´t see well and mistake each other´s limbs for food.
If you keep females on their own, they can´t get rid of their spawn, that´s not good for them either.
You shouldn´t keep one on its own, it´s better (and much funnier ;)) to have 3 or 4. For one you can use a 80 cm x 40 cm x 40 cm tank, for 3 or 4 you need 100x40x40 or larger.
How big is your axolotl now? I think it will be alright in that tank until it´s about 15 cm (about 6 inches). They grow to that size in 6-8 months I would say (can´t remember how fast mine grew).
I would put a male and a female together in a tank, or even better, a few more of both sexes. A lonely female could get in trouble if she can´t get rid of her spawn. And it´s so funny to watch them mating, the male carries the female around on its nose and behaves like crazy. Good luck!
@TsukiShia warning, axy babies are really difficult to keep! check out caudata.org for help cos one of my first ones was only 3 weeks hatched when I got him, and he died!

But who knows..maybe that book I read in middleschool lied to me<_<
Both is right ;-), they really are their own species (Ambystoma mexicanum), but they also stay in tadpole stadium. They actually are newts that don´t reach adult stadium (due to a hormone defect, nothing to do with the water), but they can produce offspring. In very rare cases they can produce the missing hormone and develop into a usual looking newt, but then their life is shorter, don´t ask me why.
That depends on the water quality. Here it is excellent so that I don´t add anything. If the quality is bad, you have to decide if you take the risk of organ damages through conditioners or if the bad water itself will damage the organs. I can´t judge this, but if it´s avoidable conditioners should not be used.
Mexicans DO eat them! It´s a shame, the axolotls are highly endangered and live only in one lake in Mexico, and they eat them. Makes me sad and angry.
I´ll have you know I´m not an ignoramus, I happen to be a biologist and I know what I´m talking about. I know this is an endemic species, but that hasn´t got anything to do with it being endangered anyway!
Uh sorry to intrude, in your conversation, but I am 14 years old, and I want to be a biologist when i grow up, could you tell me if you like your job?
@daniboy1408 nobody else is speaking spanish here, please learn to join the conversation by translating your jibberish,oh sorry, "language" to english. i know people,im an asshole. you dont need to tell me.
they carry them at the local pet store in town here and my friends thinking of keeping a few of them, ill be sure to pass on the info about them :) thanks!
It´s an axolotl, a kind of newt living in the lake Xochimilco in Mexico. But probably it is nearly exterminated by now... It´s a pity and a shame that humans can´t get enough and kill everything on this planet.
Lets bear in mind, that it's only endangered in the wild., They breed rapidly and are simple to keep as pets. Almost like a super fish. In captivity they are doing extreemly well, which obviously leads to a chance of future releases :)
What I mean is, they are no "real" and "pure" axolotls any longer since there is some different genetical material in their DNA (Ambystoma tigrinum).
Another point is that the pet axolotls have probably slightly changed their outward appearance (their build) compared to the wild ones that were discovered 200 years ago. This may be due to the small genetic pool of the imported animals that was breeded with. Sorry for my weird English... Can you see my point now? A bit fussy, but I´m biologist..
In Engish: He is a "wild catch" and was about 3 months.
Sometimes they are in big troubles if they don´t eat. Try earthworms (or cut pieces, if the whole worms are to large)and visit a vet who is familiar with amphibians. I don´t know the conditions in your tank, but you could check my information text and compare it to your tank.
Hi! They are not very hard to take care of, look at my text in "about this video". They can reach 10-20 years, but I think, 10 years are more realistic.
hey mate can i have some tips to keep my little guys alive ive been having some majour problems, i want mine to be as happy as urs, i have no rocks in my take nd i feed my little guy blood worms once a day, 2 days ago one of my Axolotls died and other was just as bad but saved the other one, i have no pebbles on the bottom of my tank should i do that and get some plants fr him? plz help me!
Hi, how big are your lotls? If they are more than 12 cm, bloodworms are not the right food any longer. You can take special pellets or earth worms, small guppies and filet of freshwater fish. Please don´t feed meat of mammals (as beef or pork), they can´t digest that very well. You don´t need to have rocks or pebbles, but many plants and sand on the ground. Pebbles that are too small can be swallowed, but not egested.
But with these signs of illness you must go to a vet, it won´t get healthy again just because of changing the food. But first of all have a look at my text, perhaps you find any hints that fit your case.
Hmmm ive been told blood worms are fine for him, he is just over say 7cm hes looking pritty lively latley and i have cleaned his tank and have changed alot of stuff, thank yo for the advice =p

herpboy99 3 years ago
They are not very difficult to keep, but of course you have to take care of ANY animal! You can have a look to my text beside they video.

cool, thats so cute ...
what is it
yankee5456 3 years ago
It´s an axolotl, a kind of newt living in the lake Xochimilco in Mexico. But probably it is nearly exterminated by now... It´s a pity and a shame that humans can´t get enough and kill everything on this planet.
Punki80 3 years ago
Lets bear in mind, that it's only endangered in the wild., They breed rapidly and are simple to keep as pets. Almost like a super fish. In captivity they are doing extreemly well, which obviously leads to a chance of future releases :)
joeribs 3 years ago
Yes, but the most of the pet axolotls carry a little genetic material of Ambystoma tigrinum. That is why there are golden albino axolotls.
Punki80 3 years ago
I don't see your point...
joeribs 3 years ago
What I mean is, they are no "real" and "pure" axolotls any longer since there is some different genetical material in their DNA (Ambystoma tigrinum).
Another point is that the pet axolotls have probably slightly changed their outward appearance (their build) compared to the wild ones that were discovered 200 years ago. This may be due to the small genetic pool of the imported animals that was breeded with. Sorry for my weird English... Can you see my point now? A bit fussy, but I´m biologist..

Your English is better than many of my countrymen, sir. Do not apologize !

IIIserenityIII 4 years ago
Punki80 4 years ago
is he a so called "cookie" or a bright "wild catch"?
and how old was he @ the time you made the videos?
IIIserenityIII 4 years ago
In Engish: He is a "wild catch" and was about 3 months.

My female axolotl isnt eating. We've tried feeding her little cubes of beef heart and bloodworms but she still won't eat. Please help me.
revingrevhead 4 years ago
Sometimes they are in big troubles if they don´t eat. Try earthworms (or cut pieces, if the whole worms are to large)and visit a vet who is familiar with amphibians. I don´t know the conditions in your tank, but you could check my information text and compare it to your tank.
Punki80 4 years ago
Turns out she got fungus on her gills the next day, but don't worry, we're giving her salt baths and putting her in the fridge. We got it covered. :D

Aww it's so cute! I want one!
Are they hard to take care of and how old do they get?
LunaTheLoony 4 years ago
Hi! They are not very hard to take care of, look at my text in "about this video". They can reach 10-20 years, but I think, 10 years are more realistic.
Punki80 4 years ago
Whoa,10 years! That means it could live longer than my bunny!
I really want one now! :) They look kind of weird yet sooo cute! Like little dragons XD

hey mate can i have some tips to keep my little guys alive ive been having some majour problems, i want mine to be as happy as urs, i have no rocks in my take nd i feed my little guy blood worms once a day, 2 days ago one of my Axolotls died and other was just as bad but saved the other one, i have no pebbles on the bottom of my tank should i do that and get some plants fr him? plz help me!
H3rbi3b0y 4 years ago
Hi, how big are your lotls? If they are more than 12 cm, bloodworms are not the right food any longer. You can take special pellets or earth worms, small guppies and filet of freshwater fish. Please don´t feed meat of mammals (as beef or pork), they can´t digest that very well. You don´t need to have rocks or pebbles, but many plants and sand on the ground. Pebbles that are too small can be swallowed, but not egested.
Punki80 4 years ago
But with these signs of illness you must go to a vet, it won´t get healthy again just because of changing the food. But first of all have a look at my text, perhaps you find any hints that fit your case.
Punki80 4 years ago
Hmmm ive been told blood worms are fine for him, he is just over say 7cm hes looking pritty lively latley and i have cleaned his tank and have changed alot of stuff, thank yo for the advice =p
H3rbi3b0y 4 years ago
When he is 7 cm, bloodworms are still okay. When he grows to the double size, they won´t be enough and it is better to give him what I told you.
