Focile is an excellent soprano who acts a little. The high B was gorgeous. But she has nothing remotely like the Oneness of singing and acting that Renee has. Dmitri can't do it alone. It takes two.
Renee appears too old for the role of the young and lithe Tatiana. In fact, it was necessary to give Hvorostovsky white hair opposite Renee so he would appear less like her contemporary which Onegin is not vis-a-vis Tatiana.
They don't have to "give" Dmitri white hair. It's his natural color, or lack of color. It should have been tinted at least for the HD Transmission. Playing a 23-26 year-old with white hair was ridiculous. Even so, the final scene (Dmitri/Renee) is the greatest thing I have ever seen in opera.
I mean, the soprano's voice is nice, but her acting is mediocre. I love Hvorostovky in the version with Renee Fleming, but he seems rather stiff in this performance. Maybe it's because there is no chemistry between them. If you're looking for the most beautiful rendition of this scene ever, look at the Fleming/ Hvorostovsky one.
I think chemistry can be seen in this performance, and Dmitri's acting is anything but stiff: full of youngish grace and love. fleming is an awful actress, so this version is a bit better. the other version is nicer, because dmitri did it with more artistic pressure... so i think both performance have good sides.
I agree. Hvorostovsky is hot and Focile is adequate. This is my favourite opera but I have seen much better. This is not a showpiece aria, they walk around the stage as if they are reading a teleprompter. Strangely enough Hvorostovsky comes to mind when I think of Onegin's character at the beginning of the opera. Though I don't think the character has changed much even at the end. I'm thinking maybe Vishnevskaya and Fisher-Dieskau......
thank you so much for this amazing recording! I never thought that this music, opera that I never really loved could be so beautiful, so increadibly touching... thank you, this is amasing
i always love that ending

thank you for the video. this video is more dramatic with the female singer running around the room.
the one with fleming and this video have pasion but different in their own unique way.
take into account that dimitri right now is at is artistic peek. he is very young in this video. he is very talented and handsome.
