  • Sweet, there's a song withmy name on it. ^^

  • i really dont know that he is dead. Can someone tell me what happened?

  • @2020Haidar CArlino31 is talking about 2pac being shot, not don mclean

  • what a great song. What more can i say?

  • That's what a call a hairdo!

  • It still makes me weep.

  • I love this song. I remember my past.

  • When I'm feeling down and stressed out I like to watch this and Crossroads and Winter Has Me in its Grip to chase the bad feelings away.

  • Wherever you may be from in the English speaking world -AUS, NZ, GB, US, IN, etc. , these lyrics are one magnificent and powerful use of the English language. Don does us in th US proud that as an American, he penned this. I only mention this because otherwise, at least in the US, good use of English & to such great purpose, is suffering - media soundbytes, social internet, non-talents in the performing arts - are slowly killing it, proper spelling and all.

  • This is perhaps one of my favorite songs. I saw Don perform in Chicago back in the 70's and it moved me greatly. My song-writing is greatly influenced by this master musician and poet.

  • Great tune and performance

  • its amazing how someone so young wrote a song like this....

  • sweet and soothing.

  • 2pac, seriously, I never knew, but I get why. Happy new year people!!!

  • This is a beautiful song. Like Jim Croce, Don didn't have the greatest voice. But the passion they sang with and the beautiful lyrics they wrote make up for it.

  • RIP Lesane Perish Crooks

  • One of the most beautiful lyrics in the history of music... :')

  • When i was in the Vincent Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam i must singing by myself "VINCENT" from Don Mc Lean. A great song for a great artist !

  • @midnightrambler12 "Vincent" is played at the Von Gogh Museum every day. A copy of the sheet music is buried in the time capsule there as well.

  • @CounterCultureLives Thanks for that, that's my little bit of knowledge for today. XX

  • He sounds like Tim Buckley.

  • A song bye a great artist about one of the greatest ever.

  • MY NAME IS VINCENT! ;D

  • Impesionante. Grande, Vincent obra maestra, masterpiece.

    Greetins from Europa, Spain

  • sketch the trees and daffodills

  • Keep hitting "0" for a surprise

  • the world needs another don mclean.bring back the talent.

  • I just love Don's voice and his guitar playing and this song. His immense talent as a singer-songwriter-guitarist is shown so naturally here. That's why I love watching this video of his the most. And the fact that he's so handsome is a big plus for me, though I realize I shouldn't say that, but I wanted to just to make you laugh, Don!

  • Brilliant.

  • very nice song i like his voice

  • best song ever!!!

  • @Utoobuser101

Yeah they said that they had this song on replay when he died. So he died to this song ):

  • wow.

  • amazing,fantastic song

  • so beautiful

  • Transports me to a better time.

  • I love his voice.

  • His singing style is so understated and yet listening to him touches me so deeply in my heart and soul. It's amazing how he can do that.

  • If you downed this video your grandmother is going to hell.

  • wish i could express myself the way don could ...... beautiful

  • relaxes my mind evry time i hear it! peace <3

  • Perennially green classic. Matchless and unique!

  • 2pac loved this guy and supposedly played this song multiple times the night he was shot

  • @Carlino31 are you serious? for real?

  • @Carlino31 Who Cares?

  • @butrokkek a lot of ppl actually

  • @Carlino31 really? i LOVE this song and i had no idea Tupac admired this guy's song.

  • @Jamaicamaaan if you look at don and pac u can see that they were similar artists, they both wanted to get their message across to their fans, pac also started as a poet, and i think the lyric in the song tht pac would appreciate most would be "they would not listen, they did not know how, perhaps theyll listen now"

  • @Carlino31

he was shot? when he did die?

  • @2020Haidar sarcasm?

  • love Josh Grobans version...no disrespect to orginal

  • Love this song. I got a friend who have the same face as him. (not the hair style though)

  • What a FANTASTIC song. It truly touches my soul!!! Thank you for posting.

  • Heard this on Simpsons :)

  • ~~music of music~~

  • This song and lyrics touches the soul~~when I first heard it years ago, not realizing at the moment that it was in Loving memory of Vincent Vna Gogh~so...when I did...being a favorite artist/painter~~the lyrics fell into place and can just imagine the inner conflicts that Vincent battled~~yet, precisely some of that inner turmoil was able to create the masterpieces he did on canvas~

    Thank you!...just love this song~

  • i am 19 and i grew up listening to music from this era thanks to my mother.

and this is in my opinion one of the most beautifully sung songs with the most incredible lyrics that paint an amazing picture in my mind whenever i listen to it

  • Saw Don live at "Manchester Hardrock" in 73. Was with my 1st love Marcia from Maesteg (still think of her) it was a magical night in a wonderful time--sigh!

  • LOVE IT

  • just so moving !!!!!!!!!! classic

  • Whenever I watch this I find it easy to believe that Don is still this young, hunky and single. Scratch single. I guess he was married in '72.

  • Van Gogh was reputedly schizoid. Personallly I beleive he was no such thing. He just marched to the beat of a different drummer is all. He was more of a genius than probably 98% of humanity.

  • @zapkvr Genius is often accompanied by some form of madness or mental disorder. A disproportionate number of extremely creative people seem to suffer from mental illness. Perhaps the wiring of their brain that makes them so creatively extraordinary also causes them difficulties in other areas. jmo,

  • I have always loved this song- spent many times trying to figure what it is talking about but it really doesn't matter. Beautiful balad.

  • @thefather32 You know it was about Van Gogh right?

  • Respond to this video... I'm never one to spruik a cover but what Jane Olivor did with this song really bears listening to. Not as good as this but still very, very good.

  • Sang this in junior high at a concert -- I loved performing this

  • judgedreadmusic

  • il y a rien a dire lol

  • Don's beautiful performance here made me love the song when I used to just like it. I think it's because he sang it better live in this video than in the recording.

  • Really great guitar music.

  • It´s so beautiful. very inspiring

  • Its sad that Justin Beiber's song "Baby" has over 650 million views, and this has only 523 thousand views..... this world will never understand the true meaning of music.

  • @nickwetodone 939,047 likes, 1,929,022dislikes at justin bieber's song. and 2,121 likes, 14 dislikes see the difference?

  • @6li6nu6s im talking about views not likes....only 10 year old girls like justin beiber, so of cours there are going to be a lot of dislikes on his video because little girls only make up a smalll percentage of our world. Im talking about how people recognize justin beiber as a "musician", but dont realize how pointless his songs are. Don Mclean is musicly far more accomplished than Justin Beiber.

  • It is music.

  • This was one of my Dad's favs by him..He was cool back then to the different music . MADE me sit and watch the Beatles first time they came here when other parents wouldn"t allow their kids to watch it...thank you daddy

  • lovely song lovely performance don mclean legend from our lifetime

  • Grow with this song. I was born in 84 and I know this song cause of my mom and dad. They got me to listen to Billy Joel

  • Comment removed

  • The comparison with Joel is offensive. When the Great american songbook is revised in a hundred years Mclean will be celebrated as a genius. NO ONE will remember anything that William Joel ever sang or wrote.

  • @zapkvr One word....Piano man

  • how could you dislike this?

  • AMAZING

  • 13 people don`t know what is music!

  • THANK GOD for UTUBE - to listen to all those songs we've loved over the years, how could we be without it <3

  • I don't really know why I fancied listening to that today, I haven't in many years.

But it nearly had me in tears and certainly very choked up.

The lyrics and the melody are just too much.

And Don makes it all seem sooooo effortless and easy.

  • What kind of mental deficiency would you need to have to dislike this song??

  • this craps all over todays music,if you can call some of the rubbish thats classified as music

  • damn Don have some nice hair

  • I've seen allot from this youtube stuff. Justn Bieber, Lady Gaga, Beyonce etc. but nthis one really different.

  • One of the most beautiful lyrics I have ever heard.

  • Even after all these years, I still get chill bumps from neck to ankles everytime I hear this beautiful song. It will always be one of my favorites.

  • @depeau44 Yes probably was infatuated. Most artists who understand Vincent are infatuated with him/his works. It's very hard not to be. Great song, brilliant rendition.

  • So many good songs that younger people will never hear or care not to bother to find. What have we missed over the centuries that we will never know and never hear?

  • I've been Don's fan quite a long time and surely consider this song the most wonderful ever... Congrats! (RUDHGY)

  • nice song

  • my older brother went to see don in manchester around 1975. he still mentions it from time to time even now. don was obviously touched from above. theres not much more to say really. faultless !

  • The ability of this guy to sing, and portray the emotions of his thoughts in the clarity of his voice and facial expressions means that he is onto something deeper than you or I can hear in his music, or see in his expression. Maybe he loved the visual arts and the soul of the artists, as much as he appreciated his own art and art altogether. But the most feeling comes from the reflection that we all feel from our own expressions in the art of life.!!!

  • @just1saying2it3 Very well stated!

  • Beautiful....

  • trully stunning

  • i love this song tooooo

  • timeless.....simply timeless tears are running down my face.....

  • i love his voice in this song.. I think his voice sounds best than any other song.. even tho i dont care for this song... it sounds like he was infatuated with vangough

  • @depeau44 I disagree with you about the infatuated part. He's just an artist empathizing with another artist who suffered mental problems and rejection after rejection in his lifetime and yet managed to create great and beautiful works of art.

  • How I wish that Don had been allowed to give live performances back then of his own protest songs or social consciousness songs like The Grave, Everybody Loves Me Baby, General Store, Three Flights Up, etc.

  • At that time so many protest songs blazed the airwaves in anger but it was nice to hear an old fashion rock and roll or love song every once in a while. Don McLean retold a story that needed retelling.I was around 14 at the time and knew nothing about "Vincent". A history lesson that I can hear again and again.

  • With talent, music, musical artists, in Pop and Rock, like Don McClean, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Bill Withers, and the list goes on, and on.. who gave us immortal songs like this one, from the 60's and early 70's, will be forever remembered in musical history, as the great era in, and of, American music renaissance.

  • A great and talented singer songwriter: his song Vincent is a classic for the ages

  • Beautifully evocative lyrics that bring Van Gogh's and Mclean's genius to life.

  • simply beautiful

  • How I wish Don would give lessons on songwriting. He wrote so many beautiful songs like this and they all sound different and on a variety of subjects.

  • Beauty painted with a voice

  • apparently 13 people are just dicks

  • @sinclairservice I was wondering the same thing, how could someone not think this was an amazing live performance?!

  • @sinclairservice LOL So true

  • Wow, how can he sing sooooo smooth live?? Guess that's talent ;)

No wonder Pac had this song as a favourite.. So poetic (:

  • Comment removed

  • Don McClean... Singer , song writer, musician. coposer, and incredible poet.

This is music at its best, what an amazing talent.

  • this song is piece of art

  • Nice hair.

  • WOW no words can express the feeling i get wjen i hear this music and lyrics(ART)

  • I think lyrically this is probably the best song ever written, Van Gogh painted beautiful pictures with brushes, Don Mclean paints pictures in vivid colours with his words.

  • beautiful words, beautiful song. what more is there to say!!!!!

  • What a poet.

  • Quality prformer. No props or bullshit, a guitar and a voice.

  • @secrow Yes, Don has a certain quality about his music and his singing that is woefully lacking in today's world. I think it's called "talent".

  • @CounterCultureLives

IMHO it is beyond talent and this man is "gifted" in ability beyond his peers.

The humility with which he concludes this only magnifies his performance.

  • @CounterCultureLives hes good, but not a chance

  • I never tire of listening to this song even though it's not my favorite Don McLean song. That's Winter Has Me in its Grip (Solo version), but I love this too.

  • If you can't appreciate this kind of music then I wonder if your soul is completely asleep or dead. How can you even compare the foolish music from this century to this beautiful song. ""How we suffer for our sanity. How we try to set them free. They would not lsten, their not listening still, perhaps they never will"

  • If you can't appreciate this kind of music then I wonder if your soul is completely asleep or dead. How can you even compare the foolish music from this century to this beautiful song.

  • There we go, 70's tunes. Sad songs but full of life and wait for it.....you can actually understand the lyrics.

  • My all time favorite since 1971. It brings back lots of fond memories.

  • I knew Don McLean had a good voice, but I didn't realize he had a masterful, soul-touching voice.

  • RONNY. XXXX

  • jeez people, your arguing about the stupidest shit. try shutting the fuck up and listing to good music

  • there are always a few couple of people who have to NOT LIKE something that deserves to be liked by everyone .... in this case they are 11 ...

  • @hagopovski yeah its getting more ignorant here on youtube, ....I was watching a video from the tacoma narrows bridge failure and im reading this post by a guy whos rambling on about why it failed, it was so convincing, his bullshit that is,..........that it almost made ME believe it, an engineer had to show up and call his bullshit and correct him, it amazing how many people here just talk shit......................amazing,.....

  • Don's bio. states that his mother was Italian, which is amazing. He doesn't look Italian at all, but how I wish he had written a song about my favorite Italian artist, Da Vinci.

  • Watching this video always relaxes me at the end of a stressful day. I avoid analyzing the lyrics and just immerse myself in Don's calming voice and music.

  • the best name for a song

  • This is without a doubt one of my very favorite songs of all times.

  • This song breaks my heart. :'(

  • I like the shirt so much that I bought one for my boyfriend. Now if only his hair could be more like Don's in this video.

  • This and many of Don's other songs are so much better with just him and his guitar. His smooth, relaxing voice and terrific guitar playing are the perfect blend for his beautiful songs, which are hard to appreciate when with a band.

  • ;) sorry our generation dissapoints you skyline2343..

  • @el63400 The generation isn't old enough to disappoint- no one has had a chance to accomplish anything, in 30 or 40 years, we can decide if they are disappointing. I just don't think rap can compare to the ballads of the 60's and 70's.

As far as modern rock bands, I have no idea if they are any good- our local stations only plays classic rock and country pop.

  • @skyline2343 there si great music still being created today. The only thing is most of the really good artist are underground or mostly unpopular. The mainstream is filled with garbage (beiber, Black, Gaga etc). I think in terms of creativity, our generation wont disappoint if you know where/what to listen to. It's sad to admit, but good music is not popular any more. The world is now filled with "singers" who cant really sing and just use autotune.

  • @rasaecnai are you saying Gaga has no talent? Have you seen her sing at a piano? Did you know what kind of music she was playing before she became popular and hit the pop scene? Do you know anything about her over and above her commercial success? Obviously not. She is an extremely talented song writer, has a hauntingly beautiful voice, and is a true musician. Because she has come into the mainstream of music culture does not take that away. Get out your tunnel visioned perspective, its sad.

  • Not everything is about comparing this one to that one, not always a competition. Some people like broccoli, some do not. Neither is better or right, it is ok to like or not like broccoli. Music is like broccoli, you either like the taste or you don't.

Life is too short to waste time arguing about who is better. I hated the music my grandmother listened to when I was young, now I don't love that music but I appreciate it. I prefer to spend time just listening and appreciating what I hear.

  • @cheekycharles How can I put this delicately?

I can't - fuck off mate. lady gaygay (or Mr gay gay if you look closely) is a product of the talentless era of shit that turds like you propagate. If you want to try to justify the crap that your man gaygay spews then, for fuck sake, go spew it on a channel that supports shit music - not this one.

  • @cheekycharles well, she sold out...

  • Our music of the 60's and 70's are so much better than some of the drivel they play now. What a beautiful song! Thanks for posting it.

  • I'm no longer satisfied with just listening to this on my cd. I always need to listen and watch this here. I wonder if there's a video compilation I can buy somewhere.

  • thank you very very much

  • this guy, show me what is the true meaning of music.. instead of just being famous, it's a matter of feeling the music..

  • @MrJoed1211 Amen to that.

  • @kraf412 Yeah! thank you! :) People like Don are only rare nowadays.. all the artist nowadays are trying to make songs about a teenager falling inlove, lust, pride and fame.. not to offend others but when you hear songs like this of Don, you can see the genuine message and feeling of pure and caring heart which is worth appreciating, than those famous artist of today....

  • I've watched this probably over a hundred times, trying to read from Don's youthful face what was going through his mind while singing his amazingly beautiful song. In his place I would be thinking "Look at me, I wrote this, I wrote this, I WROTE THIS!"

I would be so proud of myself no one could stand me.

  • Theres a wonderful urgency to this version.

  • Kinda reminds me of James Taylor. Did they ever do some duets?

  • @ElBluesummer James Taylor? They don't sound alike or sing the same way at all. Cat Stevens is the one who reminds me of James Taylor and vice versa. Anyway, James Taylor's style is more easy listening while Don McLean's is more easy listening but hard thinking because his songs are mainly about things that are hard to think about. As for duets, I wish Don had done a duet with Joni Mitchell.

  • I can't help but wonder how such a young and goodlooking guy like Don McLean was when he wrote this could have written a song with such great understanding of a long-dead artist whose life was full of pain and rejection. Maybe he's more than a gifted singer-songwriter. He's more of a gifted reader of people who just happens to be a gifted singer-songwriter.

  • @emofolkie Not sure where looks come into play here, but there really is no "maybe" about it. Don McLean is much more than a gifted singer-songwriter. From seeing and sharing the beauty found in the gifts of a troubled, unappreciated artist, to the lyrical recounting of the most tumultuous times in America's history, Don McLean's insights blend and coalesce with his musical genius. He captures the images, and captures the moments in a way that no other songwriter can.

  • @CounterCultureLives You expressed it perfectly, sir/ms. I mentioned his looks and youth when he wrote the song because such attributes don't normally cause people to have a deep, almost spiritual understanding of someone who would have been regarded as a weirdo or a freak, if VVG lived in these times. It's part of what makes DM truly one of a kind.
