My experience would be the latter. I have seen a number of business's fail as the market that they knew so well had moved on and they did not make the changes nor grasp new opportunities and adapt to a new market environment. However as new business today supersedes old business perhaps the new order will in future be far more adaptive.
Peter, an interesting point you make about reinvention or even evolution. Personally I think Madonna should be the Queen for that. You mention some successful large companies that have undergone this process and I would be interested in how smaller companies, SME's could tackle this concept. Those without massive marketing budgets but with an equal need or desire to change.
@WesleyGransdenUK I wonder if small co's are by their very nature more connected to their markets and therefore potentially more adaptable, unless their owners are single minded....
