I thought it was pretty clever in a round-about way... since it would take 20-30 minutes to get cold in the freezer (depending on how cold you like your soda) and if you would have poured a hot/warm soda into a glass of ice, the soda goes instantly flat. That's actually how they use to made ice cream.. the old fashion way, a metal cylinder placed into ice and salt, then crank it so it would turn.

Actually, since I don't make/keep ice, I just stick the soda in the freezer. Then I set a timer for 30 minutes (45 minutes for 2-liter bottles) and by then it's cold. But be sure to get it out of the freezer in time, if left too long or overnight, the containers will burst and there will be frozen soda everywhere in the freezer. (I learned that part the hard way.)

Salts dissosciate in H20, and have colligative properties. NaCl, table salt, splits into a positive sodium (Na) ion and a negative Cl (chlorine) ion upon dissosciation. The H20 bonds to both ions, and lowers the freezing point and heightens the boiling point of H20, which is why the soda can freeze faster. The water is a lot colder with a solution of NaCl and H20 rather than pure H20 because of colligative properties. That's why we use antifreeze and salt roads in winter.

The salt changes the melting/freezing equillibrium in the bowl, making the ice melt quicker and thus speeding up the process of cooling the coke bottle. Still, who would use this method practically?!

If you repeat this experiment with two identical setups, one where you stir and one where you leave it be, the coke will freeze faster in stir condition, but the overall temperature of the contents of the bowl will also reach room temperature faster because of the stirring. Don't be ignorant!

The tap water which comes from the fauset is not as cold as the ice which comes out the freeze. with that said, when you drop the ice in the water and leave it without stirring it, the temeperature in the water will not decrease as much as it would if you stirred the ice into the water therefore cooling the water down similar degrees as the ice cubes. the salt which is added maintains the coolness for longer and even allows the water to be colder. I rest my case.
