You must think of the soy sauce as jolting the squid's tentacles with very small amounts of electricity. The energy lies within ions contained in the sauce's high sodium content. These ions are used in cells to create voltage differences. Because the squid is served fresh, the cells inside are still active and when the sodium is applied, the signals across the nerve cell membranes are temporarily reactivated causing the squid to "dance."
It is disgusting.. the squid is still alive. Imagine slicing a human's head off and pouring salty fluids into the wounds and watching it squirm for fun.
Octopus live in salt water. Soy sauce is essentially salt water. Why the hell would pouring soy sauce cause pain? Sodium ions set up a galvanic cell within the tentacles and cause movement, similar to how Galvani made frog legs move. Dumb fucks.
Do you understand how a galvanic cell (basically a battery) works? It's a difference in ion concentrations. By adding salt to the wet frog legs the salt becomes Na+ and Cl- creating an ion gradient between the inside and the outside of the frog legs. Electricity passes through (like in a battery) to equalize the charge and because our muscles move based on electrical impulses it causes the muscles to contract.
@dizekat the brain function is completely gone but the tissue is still alive the sodium chloride in the sits sauce stimulates the tissue making it move
@adamchou I posed a question, which called for an answer and I did it on purpose, to gather answers from other people. If you could answer, why do you instead choose to attack the asker? I mean, you'd be better than doctors and biologists today are, so out with your *sensible* answer.
@Mynnia my apologies then. the way you posed the question seemed as if it was out of ignorance, almost. now to address your question, my definition is when neural function has ceased to exist. that, i'm fairly certain, is also the medical definition
I used to teach biology lab to college students and dissected many many squid. They do have a brain, and from the image, the brain is actually still intact. That’s no zombie squid. The mantle and viscera were removed and it still has a functioning eyes and brain
omg LOL you guys. the squid is dead. the soy sauce is just making their neurons activate. it can't feel pain because it's dead. get it? if not, let's just say that when something dies, everything in it dies including the brain, including humans.
@larukulunaseas yo, not that it really matters, but i was reallyy drunk when i posted that lmao sorry. something about "hurr durr" rubs me the wrong way

Given that Squids are the most intelligent of all invertebrates, and that tests on insects and invertebrates have shown that they do experience pain - pain being the mechanism by which an animal knows what to avoid, and suffers if they don't - given that the brain is behind the eye - given that all the internal organs are above the eye - what they've done is disembowelled it, kept it conscious then poured (to a squid) liquid acid on the wounds, causing it incredible pain. I say it's very sick.

What is it with some people in the far east? This perversity we've just witnessed, the article not too long ago showing giggling Chinese diners eating a fish that had been cooked so as to keep alive for serving, and worst of all Koreans hanging and torturing dogs slowly to death so the meat is "more fragrant". If they act like this, they are vermin rather than human. These thought processes are psychopathic and their thinkers need terminated for recycling (liquidise, spray into ocean for fish)
@1hutchcat Have you seen/ do you know in what conditions chicken live in? Do you know how badly pigs and cows are treated? You think people in the far east are "vermin", but aren't people in the west as bad? stuffing their faces, not caring about how the animal has lived it's life. You eat a cow, a hindu will see you as barbaric since the cow is seen as a God.
im a japanese, and i didnt know there is such local tradition. i dont feel like i wanna try it out, although im not gonna say these people are doing something wrong. theyre eating dead squids. how ever it looks like in this video, the squid is not alive. its got NO brain.
I don't understand how this is cruel. It's dead. It's just the soy sauce that makes the nerves jump. Plus, this is some people tradition. To eat stuff raw and fresh. Because when it's like that, it's quality is at it's peak. So people aren't gonna stop doing this even though some weak-stomached PETA people think it's gross and inhumane. SMH
@100nujabes It amazes how closed minded, ignorant and racist those PETA people are! There are dishes in Western culture that are strange to others, like eating bull's balls. But, hey, the reality is 6-7 billion people on this planet and raising beef is the costliest way to raise protein, so I'm all for eating sushi! It's more green than eating beef in terms of raising the food and cooking it (since sushi is raw).
@MrSucitivel YUP! At least beef tastes good without having to make it dance for you first with salty nasty soy sauce. I'll take a bloody slab of "dead cow" over this any day. The significantly better flavor is "for more interesting than a dancing dead squid".
@onconstant ever tasted squid? I quite like that stuff. When it's fresh it's just as good as a slab of dead cow :P Don't be so limited in your choices!
