My guess is that it is a candle box - we had one like this at home. I could be wrong in view of its recent carving. DG = Deo gloria. Did you spot the unusual face at the foot of the wall tablet at 1.38?
I think you may well be right. Certainly the size of the box would be explained by this. Yes; I did notice the face. There are many strange "images" around our churches.
I would be very interested in hearing from yourself or other interested parties of further churches in this area which I could visit - I seem to be running out!
As I took the pictures, I KNEW you would ask me that! Sorry; there is no information in the church or on the 'net that I have found. If it is a collection box, it's an odd one. I think it probably stored some item used in service, but I stand to be corrected if anyone knows the answer please?
It is a collection box for money - not as old as it looks - mid 20c!
