The pianist is Svetlanov, one of the greatest conductors of Russian music of all times. It's such a pity he didn't record more of him playing the piano, he was such a great musician! Great recording and thank god you've uploaded it!
Wundervolle Aufführung ... besonders die leisen, gefühlvollen Teile wurden mir hier besonders deutlich. Die Kraftvollen Stellen sehr statisch und gewaltig statt hastig ... chapeau!
It's great how he re-arranges material from the rest of the piece to form this movement. A huge amount of this movement is built around the first motif introduced by the violin and cello in their very first entry in the first movement. The introduction of the ninth interval is obviously a novelty, and a stunningly intense one at that. But on the whole, especially with the main theme restated at 4:13, this is a beautiful example of ring composition.

This is a kind of sonorously masculine turbulence preferred by a lot of male musicians in their exultantly conflict oriented attempt to dominate everything they encounter. The pianist is totally wihout lyric, subtlety or device beyond mono-dimensional 'power-chording'.The violinist goes along and tries to introduce some sanity through contrast but the pianist is on human growth hormone and won't be deterred from banging everything equally into submission.
