I am a huge Tarzan fan. I got an entire set of original print 1st edition books from my grandfather. I have to read them every 5 yrs or so. I jusy can't get into the movies. I think it is just so diff from what I picture in my head. I really wish I could because that is lots of Tarzan adventures I missed.
I remember watching Tarzan on TV when a little boy Johnny Weissmuller will always be Tarzan to me. I've seen the DVD packages but was always wary of them as I had no idea of the quality of the prints. Even on newer TV show compilations like Hercules: Legendary Journeys the video can be of very poor quality.
Both Weissmuller DVD compilations released by Warners - The Tarzan Collection Vol 1 (the six MGM films) and The Tarzan Collection Vol 2 (the six RKO films) are very high quality prints. You can't go wrong if you get those.
Vol 1 has a whole disc of extra features with documentaries about the MGM films. These have interviews with Burroughs and Tarzan experts and historians discussing interesting details about the actors, the Tarzan cry (one of my other clips) and many other subjects.
I agree with, support getting the Weismuller MGM and RKO sets. I would also throw in Tarzan Goes to India. A really well made film, and Mahoney is a fine Tarzan, IMO. Tarzan's Greatest Adventure is good, but the part where Tarzan keeps missing his target with his bow and arrow is pretty out of character to me. I have a hard time watching that part. Crocodile fight is also pretty weak, IMO.
Well, I've got a couple. I think the Weissmuller of the first two films (Ape man & Mate) is hard to beat for his believable feral naivety, cat-like agility, and primal savagery. I also think the Scott of "Greatest Adventure" and "Magnificent" is in the same league because of his patient discernment, relentless determination, and brooding menace.
Thanks! I am going to WONDERCON in S.F.(huge SCI/FI) convention and am going to buy Tarzan comics/movies Scott seems to be a lot of peoples fav. No one mentions Barker or Henry? Funny I use to think Bob Eubanks(Newleywed Game) was Ron Ely from the t.v. Tarzan when I was little :) Thanks for your insight
No one mentions Barker or Henry because (1) all five Barker films are preety lame and all three Henry films are pretty lame; (2) Barker's Tarzan comes across as a coifed pretty boy who emits no primal savagery at all; and (3) Henry's Tarzan has a fantastic body but he speaks with a southern drawl, which makes him sond like a bit of a dolt, and his oiled back, never-our-of-place hair makes him look like a 50s greaser.
This doesn't mean you should avoid those films, however.
Just a word of warning on buying the Weissmuler films separately. Warners have released all 12 films in two 6 film sets. The first - "The Tarzan Collection" - is a 4 disc set of the 6 MGM films, 2 movies per disc on 3 discs and the 4th is extras. The second - "The Tarzan Collection Vol. 2" is a 3 disc set of the 6 RKO films, 2 films per disc.
The prints are gorgeous, the packaging is very classy, and the extras disc in Vol 1 is a gem. I wouldn't buy anything else but these sets.
this 1920's version of Tarzan is just as nice as the later versions with other actors.

James Pierce was married to Joan Burroughs, Edgar's daughter. James and Joan were Tarzan and Jane on the radio serials of the early thirties.

James H. Pierce was a gorgeous Tarzan of Silent Era.

Well, if you manage to get your hands on a copy of that you could make a fortune. As far as I know it hasn't been seen for about 80 years.

Please explain why you have entered these two words here. I suspect you are telling us he is your favourite Tarzan.

This film was lost until the 1980's, I believe. Pierce spent his later life trying to find a copy, but died before this print was discovered.
