The 896MB RAM is nothing to do with "this is what is left after Windows uses what it needs to load your computer", it's memory assigned to the integrated graphics card.
Yeah, your right, but wanted this to be a GENERAL guide for people. I didn't want to get into actually DELETING things, as some people MAY want/need them. Just turned them off for now :D
Yes, of course adding RAM is great for INSTANT speed. But you also want to get the Maximum out of your computer before adding RAM. Thanks for the tip though. :D
Going up to 3 GB of RAM and getting rid of as many programs as possible using Revo Uninstaller (scans the registry for associated files left over) would also help.
I want to start doing this for all my friends with slow a** laptops that are always complaining.
Congrats. I've been doing this for YEARS, and always helped. From the times I've done it, I usually get about a good 50% increase. But on some computers, you actually need some of the programs starting up. That's why I just said 30%. But I'm glad it worked for you!

Did this to a netbook running vista basic and saw immediate difference. start up time is now crazy fast and my cpu usage went from about 75% to 35%
