  • Oh, I've been looking for the name of this song for soooooo long!

  • @Kitty9991 The name is all over the song :P

  • @aunkid Yeah. I knew it was banana something, I just couldn't tell what the other word was before I found out the title.

  • I miss Shonen knife... I am happy that they are reuniting for a tour again.

  • @NegaPosi2011 They aren't reuniting, they have been playing since 1981, recording since 1983, and have been releasing albums since (They did take a little time off from touring in the early 2000s when Naoko gave birth to a little girl named Emma... who sings "Birthday" with her Mom on the album Funfunfun)- This tour just happens to be for their 30th ann.... I already have my tickets for next month's show!

  • i swear this song is secret butch song about chopping up cocks!

  • @rebelanarch Then you know nothing about the Knife... when they sing about food, it's all about FOOD. (Despite their figures, these gals LOVE to eat! haha)

  • @Shoknifeman

    ya killjoy

  • @rebelanarch Shonen Knife IS the joy of music

  • Nara's girls very cute!!:)

  • Go Shonen kinfe! :D

  • I swear I have been listening to this song for two days and tomorrow that I am going to do the shopping, banana chips are on my shopping list!

  • they need some of my flesh banana

  • Somehow, I don't see Johann Sebastian Bach writing a cantata or punk rocker Sid Vicious writing a song about banana chips. Wonderfully original source material!

  • @mphello Thats what makes them special, they write about things they love, in their own little unpretentious lives :)

  • Looks expensive being made in '98

  • I've seen them do this song live three times now. Each time the audience went freakin nuts. So did I.

  • @ishabaka Yeah, they seem to play it at every concert.... not that I mind

  • @Shoknifeman

Leeds 2010... Sushi Bar, BBQ Party and Banana Chips!

Manchester 2011... Sushi Bar but no BBQ and NO BANANA CHIPS! BUT!!! COOKIE DAY!!!!!! YEEEAAAH!!!!!!!

  • @bunnykrisfalowski Sounds like you had a great time.... I'll be seeing them in October

  • that scooter looked so sick

  • Too bad the animator isn't aware that bananas don't grow on palm trees. Or any trees for that matter.

  • @somedudeinva Well, while they are in actuality a large flowering plant, they do resemble a small palm tree

  • @Shoknifeman I know I'm just being silly.

  • @somedudeinva that's cool, big fan of the band?

  • @somedudeinva Well, that's what the Knife is all about, being silly and having fun with punk music :)

  • oh, yeah!!!

  • Naoko Yamano rules

  • banana cheeps!!! oh yeah!!!!! let's get HIGHHHHHHHHH!!!

  • I was cool with it until I saw the grocery store vandalism.

  • I love original kinda people, and Shonen Knife shine!

  • lazer eyes arent freaky

  • I still remember this song , haha it is a good memory .

  • looks like Yoshitomo Nara made this video.

  • @abillionpaperstars I think he did, or at least was the inspiration. Check out Ben Davis' slideshow on Slate about Yoshitomo Nara's recent exhibit.

  • @mathwizard44 Well, he did do the character designs, I doubt he did the actual animation though (But, who knows?)

  • Shoknifeman, you have my hearty permission. Shout it from the rooftops. This is the most underrated, underappreciated and undersold band on the friggin' planet. If there was justice in the universe, the Ramones, Buzzcocks and Nirvana would have been opening acts for Shonen Knife. (And you can quote that, too.)

  • @Sirrealify hehehe ok... maybe i shall do that.... btw, since you are obviously as big a fan as I am. I want to personally invite you to join our SK forum; the html address is on my webpage (You actually have to join to read it but, I think you would be a great asset to the site :) )

  • @Shoknifeman Thanks - I will try to check out the forum soon. I have already recommended it to the friend who introduced me to the band.

  • @Sirrealify Great, i hope he enjoys our humble efforts :)

  • @ralphian67 lol what the crap dude you said shut the fck

  • one of kurt cobain's favourite bands !! its punkrock but ya kids can listen to it !!

  • With all due respect to Ritsuko (Whom I adore) & the new drummer Emi; to me, no version of SK will ever compare to the original cast; the greatest band ever!

  • i first saw this video on a computer that had no sound and i forgot the title cause the song was so good so when they performed in front of the bananas i was just like "wtf guys?" but then i went home and watched it (that computer has sound) and i understood.

  • yum!

  • 懐かしい!

    アニメのEDでしたよね♪

    この曲めっちゃ好きでした。

  • Ahh, the pure and simple joys of the mythical Shonen Knife world - songs written by a woman who has retained a fast hold on her inner child, without being annoyingly immature or silly. We get to be kids again, carefree in a lyrical world completely untarnished by the usual rock ‘n roll rubbish of jaded cynicism, drugs, violence, hatred and all the other garbage that pollutes the music.

    God bless these ladies!

    Peace, love & Shonen Knife.

  • @Sirrealify sooooooooooo well said :)

  • @Sirrealify I have a Shonen Knife website, would you let me quote you here? (I will give you proper credit, of course)

  • @Sirrealify ha ha. i like your comment so much i would love to know you

  • @Sirrealify Amen :-)

  • @Sirrealify

orly??? i thought ESP was about getting totally wasted and hearing voices in your head.

  • @Sirrealify When I was first recommended Shonen Knife, I thought "this is simplistic and boring". After reading a bit more, watching this song, and seeing your comment; I kinda get it now. This is interesting stuff.

  • For anyone who's wondering, the girls are rendered here in the style of Japanese "underground" artist Yashimoto Nara who also drew the cover art for this album (Happy Hour)

  • At the end, Michie is waving Goodbye, and she did in fact leave, right after the Happy Hour tour was done.

  • Shonen Knife is great, Their songs make me just be in the chill and lighthearted mode~~~I am floating on the clouds~!

  • This song is like crack.

  • Is Naoko the one with the laser eyes, or is that Michie?

  • @kittyprydekissme it's Naoko, you can tell by the bangs

  • Whenever I watch this video, I can't help but to smile :)

  • I love this song, it's so cute and rocking.

  • i have watched them perform here at philippines and man! aside from their cuteness as eye catcher, also their music as well as ear catcher. i love shonen knife!

  • Everyone should like the Shonen Knife. Nice, cute, happy noisy rock'n'roll from Japan. :)

  • Lol, I like my banana chips fried via laser eyes!

Such a silly and cute song.

    X3

  • the cutest rock band ever

  • OK, what the fundamental has YouTube done now? I can't give this video any stars.

  • For those of you saying how bad this looks, remember, this was at the *beginning* of 3-D animation! (And I love it, and the song!)

  • @Shoknifeman Furthermore, even if they were to remake this vid with modern 3-D animation, yes it would look and move better , but, it wouldnt be nearly as charming! ;)

  • basically my favorite Knife song. I used to sing this at my night stocking job while stocking what else? Banana Chips.

  • its fucking PUNK ROCK!

  • ahahaha i remembermy little sister when she was only 2 going to 3 yrs old she always want to see this in MTV, im not sure but i think she want a doll like that 1

  • 日本語版始めて聞いたw

  • Wow, what a video!

  • thanx shonen knife for gracing the philippines shores. you gals rock!!!!! also thanx to d japan foundation, manila. hope to see more j-pop artists.

  • their intro soounds like the ramones hahaha!

  • They started circa 1980 as an all-female Ramones tribute bad; I think it's supposed to make you think of the Ramones.

    :-)

  • @ahelmbock you meant "band", not "bad", right? ;) haha

  • haha wow, their name makes them sound like a hard rock band or something lol. too melancholy for me, but not bad, ladies

  • ...

    Renae?

  • what's "renae"? what are u talking about?

  • @NathanMantle Melancholy? This song is all about the joy of consuming banana chips.

  • This is very, VERRRRY nostalgic. Dammit! ^___^

  • i remember this riff very popular way back... :)

  • lol

Catchy song and cute video. :)

  • The Wikipedia article for 'Kawaii' really should have a link to this video.

  • Convincing song

  • Well, this is... Interesting. Not really my thing, but they've got a nice sound. There seems to actually be some feeling in their music. Pretty good for pop.

  • I want Banana Chips now!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow... high school days.. i miss this band...

  • Well, they are still around, and touring the USA as we speak

  • One of the best, not recognized, band on the planet!

  • @bobfrombarstow Everyone knows these girls, they just don't say they do. They like a tasty little secret. Both Fat Mike, Kurt Cobain love these girls, or loved in the case of Kurt.

  • Love the Knife!

  • This is so cool. I rarely like anything this popy, but you have to admit that pop music can be amazing if it's done well.

    Thumbs up. Good stuff.

  • Banana chips!!!

    Go Shonen Knife!!!

  • I lovee them. (: <3

  • this gave me the horn

  • this and top of the world are my fav.

  • that was so cute i think i shat my pants.

    5 stars!!!

  • Wait so what is this song about......;)?

  • Banana chips, of course.....this is one of their famous "food songs" ^_^

  • I had no idea this song is part of my childhood when I watched it in MTV...

  • i remember watching this on mtv way back in 1998, i was like on my 4thgrade. i like this song

  • This is quite possibly the greatest thing I have heard! It's like a female japaese Ramones!

  • they are!

  • Everyone relax, enjoy the light-hearted japanese rocker grrls, eat your banana chips and shut the fck up.

    Humour me, hmm?

  • @ralphian67 These girls are awesome...and yes, their songs make me relax and want some banana chips too lol~!

  • @ralphian67 lol

  • A Band Called Bert

  • The band is adorable... and they play great music!

    Keep on rockin', Shonen Knife!

  • Just got my ticket for the gig coming up in London - Can't wait!

  • hahaha! :DD this makes me soo happy, and I who just had a potential depression coming.. gonna keep using this shit for teraphy. :D

  • true that! :D

  • WOW! And I thought The Beatles were good! SCREW THEM! I GOT MY FREAKING BANA CHIPS NOW!!!!!

  • dude cool it, half-assed all girl japanese girl bands can never come to the superiority the beatles have exerted throughout music and culture.

  • Umm, NO! They can and they HAVE! HA!!!!!!

  • your a pretensious indie tool

  • Lol, that's the LAST think I ever thought I'd be called!

Well, your an internet loser who takes things too seriously and doesn't understand humour.

    MEANIE~!!

  • ehh, your annoying.

  • I'm annoying?! THEN LEAVE BUDDY!

I'm merely expressing the awesomness of this song and YOU'RE telling me my opinion is junk! If you don't like it, then get outta here! SHEESH!

  • You just called someone a 'pretentious indie tool' and yet you support the Beatles. Have you really any idea just how egotistical the fucking Beatles are?

  • Every famous band or band with a following have an ego, how can you not? Look at Morrissey

And who cares how much of an ego they have. I don't hear that when I listen to the music.

You obviously listen to music for the wrong reasons if you judge their personalities over the music they make.

  • I listen to music based on the music, but I hate the Beatles because I find their music to be bland, uninteresting, dated, and desperate for popularity.

  • are you kidding me they were 100% for the music. they hated the poppy bullshit and became artistic. comparing those two bands is like comparing a castle made of gold to an outhouse. this muis loses its novelty quick

  • They know what sells.

  • yeah good music.

  • Their lyrics may be what you call weak, but don't judge them unless you watch them live. They are without a doubt the most enthusiastic band in the world. They love their music and perform with passion. Kurt Cobain said he knew how hte screaming girls in the Beatles gigs in the 60s felt when he watched them, so they can't be that bad.

  • Yes a gaggle of screaming girls are exactly the best music critics in the world.

  • You seem to have misunderstood my point. And you seem to be wise enough to know that music critics are not always gonna be right on the subject of "what is good music". We all have different tastes, so deal with it.

  • I donty find their lyrics "weak" so much as different...they chose to write about things other than love; about everyday things we all do, but, generally don't take as anything special, the Knife on the other hand have something to say about everday life...I think thats pretty cool! :)

  • I've had the English version of the Happy Hour album for so many years the Japanese version of this song is so new.

    The video is to-die-for cute.

  • WTF!

  • Holy shit this is cute, I don't know if I can stand all this cuteness! This makes me want to laugh hysterically while covering my mouth with my hand, and give cute peace signs with both hands. I keed keed though this is pretty cool.

  • You have three hands?

  • Yeah!

  • ZOMG this song will be stuck in my head for a WEEK!

  • LMAooooooooo I use to love this song as a kid

  • I LOVE banana chips !!! The food AND the song !!!

  • oh my god i have been searching for this song for years! i listened to this song when i was 13 and now i am 22!

  • Happy Hour was the best pop album in the 1990s. Don't forget that kids.

  • happy hour is the best album they have done so far!my oppinion!

  • the only word i know in japanese is kawaii and it perfectly sums up shonen knife

  • わ!10年前なのね~!

    もっと昔の事みたいな感覚だよ。。。懐かしい。。。

    これが、きっかけで奈良さんの絵を、知ったよ

  • if i ever got a tattoo it'd be the shonen knife symbol

  • kawaii!

  • Few things in the world are more twee than Hello Kitty, unless it is a Japanese girl. And when they are three Japanese girls playing old time rock'n'roll and punk music, then that is something special. Just beware, if you meet a Japanese person, do not ask them if they know Shonen Knife. They will just roll their eyes, and shout 'I do not know what you are talking about!'

  • B-) Crazy and cool!

  • I love SK!! Very good!!

  • okaaaaayy, i am confused, really confused.

  • @1:05 "Banana prism power, MAKE UP!!!"
