The third kind of Mac people which has a population of about a hundred are people that actually know about Macs. You notice the new commercial? "Windows 7 is out it'll fix all the problems with Windows Vista" and the Mac guy had flashbacks until Windows 2. Doesn't really prove anything.

I've never had a PC break on an update. I recently had a reformat with a far out of date O/S disk, and had 40-60 updates waiting. Nothing broke during updating. I don't get your point, and it is invalid.

Oh, and on PC, you have tools to fix those said "Multiple problems". Unlike another operating system I know. (Assuming you wont fully wipe the drive.)

ive noticed the people who say "get a mac" are probably going by the commercial. first off, pc's dont have as many viruses as they say. u git viruses from different websites and downloads. mac can get ALL the same viruses pc's do and usually do. mac does not offer free virus protection either. there also highly expensive for the most part.

Macs don't get windows viruses. The mac os is unix, windows is not. Viruses are designed to take advantage of a specific flaw in a specific operating system or set of operating systems (ie gentoo and ubuntu could get the same virus because they are both linux.) Macs do get viruses, but they are not windows viruses. How could anyone take advice from someone who doesn't know viruses 101?

Also windows doesn't offer free virus protection. Why else would people by norton and panda.

Trying to write a successful virus for Linux, would be IMO much harder than trying to do it for OS X. One would have to package it as RPM, debian, portage, etc, and then try and get the malware into the repositories.

Plus of course due to the nature of open source software any malware would be obvious to inspection.

I didn't even think of the different packages needed. That would make getting a drive by download or something of that nature harder for it might not be your type. Also getting the virus root privileges would be difficult on linux. This isn't the case on windows or mac because they use hybrid kernels (look it up on wiki). Linux doesn't.

FYI Mac OS X is immune to Windows viruses. The only way a Mac could get infected with a Windows virus, is if it was running Windows via Boot camp.

BTW the new OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, does come with malware protection now. But AFAIK it only needs two definitions so far for known malware.
