  • steve barron, is this the same steven barron that directed the first teenage mutan ninja turtle movie???

  • He directed the one from 1990, so maybe that is the first one.

  • yes thats the first one....thanks

  • You're welcome and Thank you. You made my day/night also. :) I forgot to mention i first saw Take on me on Mtv in 1985 when i was 14. ;)

  • GREAT VIDEO Thank you so much. This is my favorite video ever and I first saw it when I was 12 back in 1985. I was hoping there would be a "making of" page somewhere and I can not believe it's here on youtube which is SO much better. Thank you SO MUCH! You rock my socks and made my DAY!

  • This is what Morten says: "Steve Barron said he needs to talk to me. 'You'll record more videos, you do not have to I will just want to talk about it'"

  • what did morten say after they were talking about bunty bailey ? i dont know coz it wasnt in english, lol.

  • Cool! Big respect to those drawing artist.

Lol now I know this is all by hand... a drawn animation sheet with cut area for the vid... lot of work and all by hand!

Lol those guys still look the same.

  • Somehow or other the Take On Me video is an integral part of my dissertation, which is based on art, animation, Baudrillard, Richard Linklater's films Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly, Philip K. Dick's theories which relate to Morten's own philosophy, Gerard Byrne's video art 1984 and Beyond, and some heavy art theory and related philosophy.

This is really useful for research - thanks for posting :-)

  • Thankyou for sharing this with us :)

  • Morten: We are very fond of the song. Atleast I am, I should only talk for myself. The song has lived its own life, it's not ours anymore in that sense. We are attached to it, associated with it, but in general it is the property and belonging to everyone.

  • Thank you noot123 ever so much for your translation ! You are wonderful for doing that ! Much appreciated by everyone. Thank you again !!!

  • No problem :)

  • thank you, you are a trully angel :):)

  • Thanks so much for the translation!. Very kind!

  • Take on Me topped the hit-single lists in nine countries, and with the album Hunting High and Low they sold over 7 million and the video won severeal awards all over the world. Today, Take on Me along with the video, is considered to be one of the '80s biggest pop-icons.

  • Actually it topped the charts in like 30 countries.

  • And the guys explodes of happyness and they scream, and there are laughter and tears. And then the door shuts and Morten comes running saying: "What are you saying?" "It's true! We're number one in the US, we just got the message!"

Commentator 09:01 - The dream that these two young boys had from the early '70s has now come true. Together with Morten they have accomplished the impossible:

  • Tired and exhausted they are gathered in a small apartment, and journalist Tor Marcussen from 'Aftenposten' (a norwegian newspaper) were there that evening.

Tor Marcussen 08:19 - The phone rings, and Magne says tired: "pff.. what is it now?" He answers the phone, and it was dead quiet in the room, and you hear a strangely loud rasp comming from the TV with only noise, and Magne is totally quiet. Suddenly he jumps up screaming: "we're number 1 in America!"

  • Pål 07:51 - If we had known by now how easy things can go wrong(speaks unclearly again, and mentions some english expressions) - we would have a nervous break-down.

Commentator 08:01 - Through September they were attending TV-performances, radio-interviews and photo-sessions in the US every day all day long. One day in October they are back in London.

  • Commentator 07:26 - Through the whole summer A-ha was walking around in Oslo waiting and waiting, while the song Take on Me slowly climbed up the Billboard hit-singles charts.

Pål 07:34 - So we had little contact with what actually happend, we only bought a magazine like once a week.

Commentator 07:40 - But then Warner comes with the latest stunt in the PR marceting strategy. August 30, A-ha is getting on a plane to L.A to give the song the final push up the charts.

  • Pål 07:05 - We saw every week that it was climbing from one place to another. All the way from place 98.

Magne 07:14 - Sometimes it jumped one place up, then two places up, then ten, and then it would stand still for a while. So it was very nerve-wrecking for us and we were always thinking: when does the song gonna stop on the list?

  • Pål 06:46 - The only thing we had done was standing at the Folkemuseum (direct trranslate=peoplemuseum) in Oslo and done some radio "stuff" (he says that word unclearly, so I don't really understand what he said) to 500 radiostations over there, so in general we had little contact with what happened.

Commentator 07:01 - And then Take on Me were starting to climb up the Billboardcharts in july 1985.

  • Morten 06:26 - They became interested doing it exclusively from Norway. It was different and special that they wanted to do it here, so teams from the US came over here to Norway. We traveled for instance to the small villages when at the time there were very high pollen-season, and we became very sick. Magne and I, also Pål, all three of us really were totally languid.

  • Because this was long before the computergraphics time, so everything had to be done manually. Jeff Eiroff (?) let MTV have a sneek-peek at the new music video while the finishing result were in progress.

Commentator 05:57 - While Warner was preparing for the release of Take on Me, A-ha were pretty much staying at home in Norway.

  • Morten 04:59 - Steve Barron came to me, and said; Morten, I have to talk to you. And he said: You are going to shoot many music videos and it doesn't have to be.. and I just have to say .. eh.. I just wanted to mention that to you *morten laughs*

Commentator 05:13 - Then the 'after'-work for the new breaking out musicvideo took 4 months to finish.

  • Magne 03:23 - I remember walking in to Wickhams office when the Take on Me tape was finished, and I said "This is how the song is going to sound!"

Commentator 03:44 - The shootings took only two days and were finished early in the springtime in London 1985.

  • Pål 00:56 - We said: Forget Europe. We said to the English record label "don't do nothing more, we don't want to you to do anything more with the band. We are going to 'break' this band. No one else is going to release this record.".

Commentator 03:13 - In London, A-ha managed to convince Warner to record Take on Me once more from the start, and Alan Tarney is the new producer.

  • I can try my best :)

  • Can someone translate when the band members are talking.

  • I can try my best :)

  • Thank you!
