@Draugh39 I know it has been since 1981 when Valery Kharlamov and his wife died in an automobile accident, but I'm very sorry to hear that. It must have been extremely tough for the kids to live through their whole lives without both parents around to be with them. RIP Valery Kharlamov. Thankfully his memories on the ice will live on.
I agree. What I really think is a tribute to his skill as a player is that hockey fans from all over the world agree in this despite all the problems with the cold war and "national pride". I'm Swedish and even when we were hammered by the CCCP we still could enjoy the brilliant hockey.
Just a thought experiment. If it had been possible, would you have like to see the "troika", Kharlamov, Petrov and Mikhailov play as a lineup for your own club-side?
@Draugh39 Kharlamov, Petrov and Mikhailov line play on my club-side. It would be something. There was a time in the early 1990s, the NHL's Vancouver Canucks tried one time to have the entire line of Bure, Federov, and Mogilny (the dominate Russian line at the time) play for them. At least they did have The Russian Rocket himself, Pavel Bure play on their roster and he used to scare the hell out of the opposition with his explosive skating and goalscoring.
Bure was brilliant too. So you are a Vancouver fan? We have one of "our" (Brynäs IF) players coming your way soon I have heard, Anton Rödin. I haven't seen him play myself as I now live in Australia (a distinct lack of hockey here) but I hope he does you proud.

Those guys won was because of their heart, which is one thing Tarasov didn't teach as the "Father of Russian Hockey". So ya, Canada makes a battle out of a game, while the Russians play the easy way to victory. No use for using their own refs on that part.
More Soviet players should be inducted .. Kharlamov was one of the first - he deserved it, but shoudn't have been named in front of the likes of Bobrov, Firsov, Makarov and Vasiliev. Maltsev also should be in the hall, along with Mikhailov and Starshinov. These guys were hockey superstars and the hockey hall of fame should consider rewarding them for their greatness.
They will, in due time, Glenn Anderson should have been in long ago, isn't. Bobrov and all those guys will be in since they have Petr Stasney on the selection committee now. The reason Kharlamov got in was because of media pressure, but my opinion, he should have been in a long time ago.

Before that the best Russian players played in Russia , and the only time the rest of the world got to see them was at Olympic Games , World Championships etc .

Valery Borisovich Kharlamov (Russian: Валерий Борисович Харламов; January 14, 1948 - August 27, 1981) was a star ice hockey player from the Soviet Union. He is considered by many to have been the greatest player to have been produced by the Soviet Union. He died in a car accident.
At Montreal, Canada, in game one of the eight game international series against the best professionals from Canada, a virtually unknown Valery Kharlamov astonished Canadian fans and their star hockey team with his explosive speed, agility, and goal scoring prowess. Kharlamov was voted the game's MVP after he scored two goals while leading his team to an upset victory that shook the foundations of North American professional ice hockey to the core. In game six of the fiercely fought series.
Canada's Bobby Clarke, of the Philadelphia Flyers, slashed Kharlamov on his left ankle. Although he bravely continued in game six, he was unable to play in game seven and was ineffective in the final game. Some observers believe that this injury was a crucial incident which turned the tide of the series in Canada's favour. Some believe that constant slashing of Kharlamov was retaliation for the goals that he scored.
This was your way of playing hockey back then. You should be thankful that European players taught you how to play intelligent, combinational game and not be the bunch of goons worrying about how to slash and injure someone instead of playing the puck.
Shrimnov!!!! i dont what your getting at??? Russian have won 1 BEST OF BEST tourney. What the hell are you trying to say? you must be drinkin too much "shmirnov" WHAT IS YOUR POINT!?!?!?!?! PLEASE TELL ME!!!!!
Oh, well. I see you stubborn -- it is good -- it got you as far as semi-professional team. You remind me the soviet communist apparatchik with the slogan -- "It is better because it is OURS!". You just need to be a little bit wiser. Statistics is vital. Nothing proves better than that. Let's look at the numbers?
Numbers are deadly. There is no place for your whining or excuses. We can always find millions of reasons why we did not win but the result will be remembered in history and your tears will be forgotten tomorrow. Your players might have been good but they did not prove it hard enough. USSR had cruel but the best system to train the BEST team and history logged it into its annals. "What if" games are left for losers.
Never spoke with someone with soooooo many excuses! We won we continued to win and we still win. You go anywhere in the world and say the word "hockey" everybody thinks CANADA! The only thing that matters is The "BEST ON BEST" even put the canada cups aside and look at the world cups and last 3 olympics no home advantage. CANADA = #1 ......
Wake up and clear your head. Are we still talking about Valerij Kharlamov and team USSR vs Canada? You are getting lost, my friend... You asked for reasons Kharlamov is being honored - we tried to explained... You just not getting it. The only player who can stand up to Kharlamov's fame is Wayne Gretzky.
Canada is back on top because, there is no Soviet system of training and USSR red machine is gone...
Your "excuses" again......... nothing to do with interational competition "Canada VS USSR" Club teams vs soviet National teams obvious outcome. How about team canada goes to Russia and plays club teams. It would be 15 - 0 EVERY GAME!
Oh, boy... I'm talking about apples; he turns away and talks about oranges. I'm not denying that Russian hockey team sucks nowadays. Look at the title of the video... Think when this guy was playing... Are you still getting lost? I see you are one of those people who talks nonsense when has no arguments... Rest in peace... May god enlighten you some day...
Again and again - the same blow... Your best wasn't good enough against USSR's best. Check the super series. And do me a favor, read my posts - you migth learn something: total games played in Summit Series-Canada Cup between Canada and USSR - 10 lost, 6 tied, 10 won.
he was the best ruskies had... He couldnt hold Bobby Orrs jock!
People on here saying Canadians were goons!! ya we had a few russians kicked us with skates!!!!!! WTF is that. We had just as much talet if not more than they did.
Vladislav Aleksandrovich Tretiak MSM (Russian: Владисла́в Алекса́ндрович Третья́к; born April 25, 1952 in the village Orudyevo in Moscow Oblast, Soviet Union, now Russia), was a goaltender on some of the most successful hockey teams of the Soviet Union and is considered one of the greatest goaltenders in the history of hockey.
"and is considered one of the greatest goaltenders in the history of hockey." They both played against very weak european competition.... so what if they played good for 7 games against Canada! that shouldnt make the hall of fame
"Many NHL clubs were in a frenzy to sign up Valery Kharlamov for his impressive showing in that game. They had just seen him once and were already considering him the finest winger they had ever seen. Everyone realized that any one of these Soviets could make the NHL." He was offered $ 1,000,000 to play in NHL. I believe that W. Gretzky got only about $250,000 for his first year...
The truth is that, if I name any of my sources you would disregard them because it came from me. Thus, I think it pointless to name them. They are openly available in English and Russian versions of the internet. For starters, go to Google and search on Valery Kharlamov. I have the feeling that you have not done even the basic homework, before opening your mouth.
haha... stupid eh. Jiri Bulba (im a friend of the family) says Kharlamov was good but not that great! Jiri played against him over 100 times. 76 Canada up, world champs and so on. DUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE! owned!
Damn man, you are dumb!!! You forgot to mention 74, 79,81,and 87(cccp vs all NHL stars) Get real man, soviet team was the best... if you don't trust to Internet, go to the library and check info there...
87 eh (he was really good in that series!)ahahaha you obvioulsy dont know what the hell your talking about! He was dead in 81! nice try.... STILL OWNED!
I was talking about soviet hockey team, idiot. As for Kharlamov there was no any canadian/american player those days who'd play nearly like Kharlamov... Who is Jiri Bulba??? I've never herd of that dude. He was probably sitting on the bench whatchin' #17 play...
Hey Igor, Long time no speak! i was on the TSN website and theres a great article about how Canada has had the thier best year in hockey. Though you might want to have a peakskee "Was 2007 Canada's best hockey year ever?"

I totaly respect NHL to add Mr. Valeriy Kharlamov into Hall of Fame
Even Mr. Kharlamov did not play even one game in NHL
He was one of the greatest hockey player who ever was born on a surface of our small planet Earth.

The Philadelphia Flyers and Buffalo Sabres knew how to beat the pants off of the Central Red Army team in 1976 and 1979.
But all hatred aside, Vladislav Tretiak and Valeri Kharlamov were the only two Russians players I liked and respected.

Well, if someone asked me ten years ago which was the best player in hockey history, I would have said Gretzky.
And until I saw Kharlamov here, on the net, I would have said Lemieux.
Now that I have seen Kharlamov, I have to say he is the ONE. He was so fast and explosive all the others looked like turtles on the ice.
Kharlamov had WAY more speed and hand skill than both of them. He was at least 20 years before his time.

if Canada used NHL players all the time, we would have as many or close to what Russia has for world chamionships..which is a lot!

EXCUSES!!!!!!.............. CANADA IS #1 EVERYBODY KNOWS IT!
We should have a poll on here to see what everybody thinks
tacular3 4 years ago

In the 40 games he played against the nhler's, he scored 48 points, was physical when he had to be as well, not bad.

he was the best ruskies had... He couldnt hold Bobby Orrs jock!
People on here saying Canadians were goons!! ya we had a few russians kicked us with skates!!!!!! WTF is that. We had just as much talet if not more than they did.
tacular3 4 years ago
Good, good, good... We are getting somewhere... "We had just as much talet..." is a very good statement. I agree with on that :)

So you're going to base a player's whole career just on ONE series? You're a joke.

Gretzky got only about $250,000 for his first year...

that sounds like allot of crap.... where do you get this stuff er i mean make it up. LOL
tacular3 4 years ago
The truth is that, if I name any of my sources you would disregard them because it came from me. Thus, I think it pointless to name them. They are openly available in English and Russian versions of the internet. For starters, go to Google and search on Valery Kharlamov. I have the feeling that you have not done even the basic homework, before opening your mouth.
