What's your proposal here? Remove that verse and adopt a policy of ignorance towards a part of Australia as a whole's history? What would that gain? Who does that line upset? isn't the sentiment true?

this song paint a more vivid picture of Aus than in comparison to the current anthem, honestly and no offense current Aus anthem's lyrics sounds like it came from a British guy that sings it out loud in the shower, i mean... how often do u say or even hear the words like "toil" and "girt"? there's nothing in the lyrics that even describe multicultural and that's the most prominent thing about Aus; its the one place on earth that can serves you dishes from around the world within one city.

Maybe, however there's a lot of lines like "I came upon the prison ship,bowed down by iron chains" None of us came in a prison ship in chains. We haven't lived for hundreds of years.Maybe if all those lines are taken out and some lines written to reflect what we really are: country of desert and rock where 90% of the population live in cities on the Eastern shore.We outsource jobs to India,virtually give our resources to foreign mining companies,sell farming land to Japan.

I think you're missing the point of the song. The point of lines like that are to celebrate Australia's rich history. Some people's families did arrive in chains and have remained here even since, it doesn't mean that everyone had to arrive here in chains, it's a simple recognition of their part in this country.

The song is to celebrate an all-encompassing Australia. That despite whatever origin you may of had, you're still part of Australia and an Australian.

The anthem was first performed in 1878 so you can guess it was written either then or before making the use of Girt etc quite acceptable.
