Okay, so I know theres Billy Joel, Liberty DeVitto, Russell Javors, Doug Stegmeyer and Richie Cannata but who's the other person (I think the guy playing the electric guitar in the far right corner)
The first time I saw Bill was Dec. 1976 at Muelenburgh College in Allentown. Doug Stegmeyer on bass Richie Cannata on organ and sax, Russell Javours on guitar. In the front doing backup vocals and harmonica. But the other guitar player here is Howard Emerson he wasn't playing with Billy at the concert I attended. I think it was Frank Vento. Great night siting on the gym floor with about 1500 people. I'll never forget it. I was with my ex wife so I did forget her!!!
"Bob Chipman is a film critic and independent filmmaker. If you've heard of him before, you have officially been spending way too much time on the internet." No, if you have seen this vid because of moviebob then you're spending too much time on the internet.
sweet mini moog at 3:20. This is great early early billy but they got so much better at it - by the early 80s the band was incredible. I love the low tech production. That snare drum sounds like a huge piece of crap!
*blinks* .... dammit, Movie Bob. now this is gonna be stuck in my head for the next day or two. or anytime i play a game that features the 'angry young man' protagonist. >.>
I love these lyrics. Has any band that's not happy disco done this song though. It doesn't even fit well- not even ironically (or at least, not ironic in a way that's worth it). Hell I'd by happy with a dixiland tune.
I have seen the greatest and Billy Joel is in the Pantheon. I saw Billy Joel LIVE in West Palm Beach in high school (77-78?) and he had all the energy and SOUL of this performance. LISTEN! Liberty De Vito I LOVE you!! Mike Douglas or booker = Pantheon for having KISS and TED NUGENT on the show.., WOW were blessed to be able to see John Lennon and Sly Stone on Cavett... and to see DOC SEVERINSEN and the band on JOHNNY.. Billy Joel is the King of the Piano, and I'll never stop loving his music!
The Buzz all over the music industry is for another Long Island artist Dominick. Do to all the attention his release has been pushed forward. Go to Dominickworld
I'm so frickin' impressed with Billy's performance in this. Plays piano AND does the synth solo like its nothing while looking at the crowd like there's an unruly child causing a fuss. I'd like to know how many times they practiced this as a band to be so tight. I hate the sound of the drummer's cymbals and the way he moves his arms, though.
@MattHatter It's the first I've really took note of his playing and noticed he was kicking ass then I scrolled down and read y'alls comment I'm glad I have a name now.

Yeah it is to the same song, Prelude/Angry Young Man originally from the Turnstiles album from 1976 and the Kohuept live album in about 1987 or the late 1980s anyway.
If you type "Billy Joel - Angry Young Man (live)" exactly word for word or copy and paste it into the search box, then you'll see the actual video performance of it on here too.
Liberty is a drumming god but why is he so loud in this performance? It wasn't just him but the entire mix that sounded horrible. I wonder if Joel's guys did it or Douglass'?
I totally thought the same thing about the mix. And you hardly hear the piano; it sounds tinny and awful! It was probably the TeeVee people who screwed this one up.
Can't help but notice that once the verse starts this is REALLY close to scenes from an italian restaurant. Forgive me if I'm late on this...is it on purpose?

Actually Liberty wasn't writing a book. He had a lot of negative input to the book by Mark Bego. Title: Billy Joel The Biography. Wow! You talk about a RARE CLIP!! Nice job scoring this one Turnstiles06!! Mike Douglas was the only national afternoon talk show back in the 1970's: So he pretty much had a lock on guests back then. One of the greatest songwriters of all time...?
PLEASE! I like the piano man as much as the next douche bag... but greatest songwriters of all time...? let the billy joel cock sucking contest begin... :)
I should have been more specific. I was just remembering the lukewarm response he got from critics in the late seventies and early eighties who were calling his music lightweigt pop.
I've always loved this song. And yeah, rockbertoqc, the great music might make some oblivious to the message... but it's there for those who wnt to really listen. One great musical piece.

True Rusty, the sound was hollow sounding. But EVERY act on the Mike Douglas Show had that raw uneffected vibe to it. Peter Frampton, at the height of the live album, appeared in a rare TV appearance and sounded...well, like this.
the drummer is good. the drum is loud but it's not a mistake of the drummer but of the mixer recording. and then it's not retarded but billy chose sometime to play it slower and sometime faster. And there's not retarded faces. don't take LSD !!!
Shit, what a great performance and you can only manage to insult the guy with a coment that I would normally not even bother replying to if I was not pissed!! Really uncool Maxixe!~!!!
Most certainly a great album, followed by the smash "The Stranger",and followed by the equally great "52nd Street".I consider Billy's music from the 70's through the mid-seventies to be the best.
it's funny, if you check out liberty's body language, it almost looks as if he's playing conga drums.

Agreed. The mix was as awful as it could get.
But Billy is one of the greatest writers/Entertainers of our times.

True Rusty, the sound was hollow sounding. But EVERY act on the Mike Douglas Show had that raw uneffected vibe to it. Peter Frampton, at the height of the live album, appeared in a rare TV appearance and sounded...well, like this.

Billy Joel did a kick-ass job with this song. Toward the end of the song was awesome. It would be nice to add the accordion to it. Don't you think?

the drummer is good. the drum is loud but it's not a mistake of the drummer but of the mixer recording. and then it's not retarded but billy chose sometime to play it slower and sometime faster. And there's not retarded faces. don't take LSD !!!

Wow, Liberty's drums are real good but real LOUD! Too bad the drummer's screen wasn't around in 1975, huh!

well it's not so much that, but everyone's really tight together, heck billys piano is only like 5 feet from liberty's bass drum

Most certainly a great album, followed by the smash "The Stranger",and followed by the equally great "52nd Street".I consider Billy's music from the 70's through the mid-seventies to be the best.

He should put a DVD out of the archive footage. It's pretty fun to watch the band back in the day.
