  • it's funny, if you check out liberty's body language, it almost looks as if he's playing conga drums.

  • Great to hear such an early live version - amazing how different the actual sound is to later versions.

  • Love Liberty Devitto, came and saw him today

  • Howie Emerson is the other guitar player

  • Okay, so I know theres Billy Joel, Liberty DeVitto, Russell Javors, Doug Stegmeyer and Richie Cannata but who's the other person (I think the guy playing the electric guitar in the far right corner)

  • Like for Liberty DeVitto's porn stache

  • I love playing the ridiculously fast intro on the piano. Billy Joel songs are fun as hell.

  • doug stegmeyer bass player

  • I definitely know MovieBob, but how did he send you guys here?

  • The first time I saw Bill was Dec. 1976 at Muelenburgh College in Allentown. Doug Stegmeyer on bass Richie Cannata on organ and sax, Russell Javours on guitar. In the front doing backup vocals and harmonica. But the other guitar player here is Howard Emerson he wasn't playing with Billy at the concert I attended. I think it was Frank Vento. Great night siting on the gym floor with about 1500 people. I'll never forget it. I was with my ex wife so I did forget her!!!

  • All of you who came here from MovieBob depress me. Listen to some decent music on your own, people!

  • Ya gotta love that bass!!!!! Who is that guy? GREAT SONG!! JOELS AWSOME!!!!!

  • "Bob Chipman is a film critic and independent filmmaker. If you've heard of him before, you have officially been spending way too much time on the internet." No, if you have seen this vid because of moviebob then you're spending too much time on the internet.

  • sweet mini moog at 3:20. This is great early early billy but they got so much better at it - by the early 80s the band was incredible. I love the low tech production. That snare drum sounds like a huge piece of crap!

  • moviebob any one?

  • the good mr. Moviebob from the escapist sent me

  • *blinks* .... dammit, Movie Bob. now this is gonna be stuck in my head for the next day or two. or anytime i play a game that features the 'angry young man' protagonist. >.>

  • plug in Bionic Commando (Rusko Remix) or Cyberoptix - Geisha and just read the lyrics, cause the music of this is pointless.

  • "boring as hell"

    That's awesome.

  • I love these lyrics. Has any band that's not happy disco done this song though. It doesn't even fit well- not even ironically (or at least, not ironic in a way that's worth it). Hell I'd by happy with a dixiland tune.

  • Hello gentlemen, I'm from the internet... whoops. Wrong message, uhhhhh... Movie Bob sent me as well.

  • I got sent here by movie bob!

  • I wonder what kind of spike this vid will get from Movie Bob. ^_^

  • Anyone else get sent here by Moviebob?

  • @XiremaXesirin Me! :)

  • @XiremaXesirin Same here :)

  • @XiremaXesirin Me 2

  • @XiremaXesirin Yeah I just finished reading his article lol

  • @XiremaXesirin well since everyone is sending you a mee toooo message, I thought I'd join the spam boat

    ME TOO

  • Billy is always interesting to hear live. He's always tossing in something different

  • Back when Billy was serious musician. Alas today he's gotten famous and majorly into nostalgia

  • I have seen the greatest and Billy Joel is in the Pantheon. I saw Billy Joel LIVE in West Palm Beach in high school (77-78?) and he had all the energy and SOUL of this performance. LISTEN! Liberty De Vito I LOVE you!! Mike Douglas or booker = Pantheon for having KISS and TED NUGENT on the show.., WOW were blessed to be able to see John Lennon and Sly Stone on Cavett... and to see DOC SEVERINSEN and the band on JOHNNY.. THANK GOD that Conan had MAX all those years! LONG LIVE ROCK & music!

  • Is it true that Mike Douglas sold these windows from the wall to TV VIVA?

  • The pianist on the left is an animal.

  • the pianist on the left is amazzzzing

  • I heard this song today for the first time in my life and I considered myself somewhat well-versed with Billy Joel's music. Great song.

  • 2 minutes of pure rocking out before any sort of singing...That's pretty badass.

  • look at those sexy hands.

  • wie der drummer abgeht^^

  • what year was this? a little piece of history, via time travel...a peek into the past! thanks for posting!!!!

  • Fantastic drumming by Liberty Devito!!!

  • Even only being 18, I was raised listening to Billy Joel, and have seen him live twice. I still have three of his tapes and listen to them often (yes...TAPES), and also have the two-disc compilation of some of his most popular songs. Billy Joel is the King of the Piano, and I'll never stop loving his music!

  • Billy Joel's Prelude/Angry Young Man reminds me of what my Uncle had did to Grandmother.

  • great footage, very nice taste of the 70s. those were the days...

  • Tight band. Billy kicks ass here as usual.

Note: This new autoplay feature, (which you can't seem to turn off), is getting on my last f**king nerve!

  • I'm so frickin' impressed with Billy's performance in this. Plays piano AND does the synth solo like its nothing while looking at the crowd like there's an unruly child causing a fuss. I'd like to know how many times they practiced this as a band to be so tight. I hate the sound of the drummer's cymbals and the way he moves his arms, though.

  • Liberty Devitto should get a lot more credit than he does man, Dino Danelli too!!!

  • @Thamacx: AGREED! Especially Dino....he was one of rock's first "show" drummers twirling his sticks and all before rock drummers were doing it.

  • @MattHatter It's the first I've really took note of his playing and noticed he was kicking ass then I scrolled down and read y'alls comment I'm glad I have a name now.

  • billy rules

  • Is that Howie Emerson on guitar?

  • Who's the guy with the moustache playing drums?

  • @blutocampbell

    Liberty DeVitto

  • Who's the guy with the moustache playing drums/

  • @blutocampbell That's Liberty DeVitto

  • The drummer has a sweet mustache and who invited the angry Canadian

  • Lol poor Billy fluffing his balding head's hair.

  • The guy in the middle on the podium looks like a young Billy Joel

  • THE 1970's - IN YOUR FACE !!!!

Polyester suits and plastic back drops on Mike Douglas - sigh - those where the days ;)

  • I've seen that same prelude many years ago from his USSR tour in 87, was it to the same song???

    Anyone ???

  • No, he's got two songs called Prelude/Angry Young Man.

    Dumbass.

  • OOOh funny how some people have such big balls and firey courage only with the anonymity of the internet. Dumb ass ay??? Careful, cause not far away is accessible software that will allow users to be tracked down by anyone, anytime. Great for those vengeful psychopaths with nothing else to do with their time !!!

  • ease up there chief, nothing wrong with a simple question.

  • I guess this song's title is about you.

  • yep.

probly. he could have been messing around. but thats a lot of time to mess around in.

  • Yeah it is to the same song, Prelude/Angry Young Man originally from the Turnstiles album from 1976 and the Kohuept live album in about 1987 or the late 1980s anyway.

If you type "Billy Joel - Angry Young Man (live)" exactly word for word or copy and paste it into the search box, then you'll see the actual video performance of it on here too.

  • Prelude is one of my all time favorite instrumentals! It just makes me feel so happy =)

  • F**k Elvis. Billy is the king of rock 'n roll!!!

  • @KitFallapart Billy Joel is the Piano God

  • @KitFallapart YOU SAID IT!! HE IS THE KING..

  • @KitFallapart this isn't rock and roll

  • @darius595 Yes, thanks for your useless input there. Appreciated.

  • wow, I heard this song so many times at work but I had no idea it was billy joel. Pretty cool now that i know.

  • Liberty's backbeat makes it sound a bit rap-like when Billy is singing the verses. Great song. Thanks for posting this archival treasure.

  • Liberty is a drumming god but why is he so loud in this performance? It wasn't just him but the entire mix that sounded horrible. I wonder if Joel's guys did it or Douglass'?

  • I totally thought the same thing about the mix. And you hardly hear the piano; it sounds tinny and awful! It was probably the TeeVee people who screwed this one up.

  • You know, I can't decide whether Billy Joel is more gifted because of his lyrics or his melodies. I mean..... he's just plain unbelievable. !!!!!

  • I really hope to see liberty and billy play again one day. Lib > billy

  • no my friend you are wrong. nobody is > billy

  • Can't help but notice that once the verse starts this is REALLY close to scenes from an italian restaurant. Forgive me if I'm late on this...is it on purpose?

  • I don't hear it.

  • Which part of Scenes do you think its close to? The 'Brenda and Eddie' section?

  • yeah...the harmony structure and the rhythm of the Brenda and Eddie section I think comes from the same wheel house...I mean they're both Billy...I love both songs.

  • To put so much into a song. amazing. You don't see that nowadays.

  • Ha ha, I love Liberty with his 70's Ron Jeremy mustache.....

  • Has a Prog-rock feel. The intro was straight out of the Yes playbook.

  • yeah, kind of has a time and a word feel, doesn't it?

a bit like "no opportunity necessary"

  • What a song.

  • the piano part in the beginning is amazingly hard (his hands are like a blur) and I love the guitar and harmonica in it. A recommended album of Billy Joel's that has this song on it is Turnstiles.

  • I can't believe Billy did that synth solo with one hand --- and not even looking!

  • any chance of sending them my way willie?

  • unfortunately those rare performances have been taken down bc of a copyright claim. a DAMN shame ... they were amazing ...

  • B.J.'s drummer Liberty DeVito has a moustache!

  • yea the guy is way off. it sounds like a tech issue though

  • Great song. The guy singing harmony is fine, I don't get the negative comments.

  • it wasnt negative it was more of a wow feeling, like i didn't think billy would allow that. jeez im just stating a something that is clear as day, im not insulting billy or the instrumentalists in any way, theyre amazing like usual

  • wow whoever is singing harmony kinda f'ed it up

  • Maybe you meant harmonica? He was a little off time, a little slow, in the beginning.

  • naa i meant the harmony.. the singing the harmonies is doin a pretty bad job.. don't get me wrong im a huge billy fan, but not a huge fan of his backup singer in this one

  • 可以的哈

  • 可以说中国话?

  • he accidentally presses an extra note on 0:14

  • An amazing song! However, the show's sound engineer needed his butt kicked.

  • lmfao!

  • Man this song hasn't aged much. Those chords and that arrangement still sounds cool even today. Just can't go wrong with ol Billy

  • Billy Joel is great! We all know that! But the guy harmonizing.... sucks

  • billy has nice hair.

  • What was that keyboard? A Korg, Roland?

  • I believe it's a Moog

  • I was a month old when this was broadcast. Cool vid.

  • Robert Smigel on drums.

  • Liberty DeVito.

  • Robert Smigel on drums.

  • good to see the 'hungry' billy. i miss that.

  • Actually Liberty wasn't writing a book. He had a lot of negative input to the book by Mark Bego. Title: Billy Joel The Biography. He talks of getting financially screwed by Billy, drugs, etc...I heard that's why Billy (and rightfully so) kicked him out. Billy now uses Chuck Bergi on drums from the play Movin' Out.

  • You can either use your Thumb or pointer finger, I find the thumb easier.

  • It's too bad Billy kicked Liberty out of the band after so many years. I guess Liberty should've kept his mouth shut.

  • Do you know exactly why Liberty got kicked out? I've always wanted to know.

  • I read that Liberty said some negative things about Billy's girlfriend (now wife) and also was writing a tell-all book which included details about Billy's drinking and drug use

  • Really? What was the title of the book?

  • i use this song as practice when i'm trying to learn it because is a slower version but slow or fast is a great song. :)

  • All the talent is there...but they look like babies! LOL. It's nice to see Billy held his ensemble for so long.

  • Wow! You talk about a RARE CLIP!! Nice job scoring this one Turnstiles06!! Mike Douglas was the only national afternoon talk show back in the 1970's: So he pretty much had a lock on guests back then. I remember Mike having John & Yoko Lennon; Sly & The Family Stone. I remember seeing Gene Simmons of KISS for the first time ever and that was on his show!! That was pretty wild!! I didn't know Billy Joel was on his show. Good performance!! Thanks for posting!

  • Thanks for posting this. I can't believe that Billy Joel was on Mike Douglas. Obviously the sound quality was bad but it was still amazing to see how young they all were. I saw Billy a few weeks ago at Shea Stadium and every single one of those hairs on his head were gone.

  • There's nothing like a good random, pointless argument - Billy Joel is ok but can't be compared to XYZ - XYZ???? You're an idiot!! - ABC are the best! ABC rule! XYZ are S**T! etc.. blah blah blah

  • Billy Joel is amazing, but Lennon and McCartney are the greatest songwriters of all time, hands down.

  • youve gotta be kidding me

  • wow fuck you he could be

  • That was on The Mike Douglas Show 1974 and Billy was at his best and i agree with some folks about the underrated Liberty on drums.

  • hell yeaq heil the piano man!!! :)

  • billy is by far the greatest pianist whos ever lived

  • Liberty Devito is The Most Underrated Drummer Ever. PERIOD. and Joel is America's Greatest Songwriter. Period.

  • @therealjohnnytampa He is a vastly underrated drummer!

  • This just shows that Billy Joel is the best piano player and the best songwriter in any genre.

  • agreed

  • eltons not bad though...although he didnt write the lyrics to his songs over course

  • This guy is so underated. I love his seventies period. He is one of this country's great songwriters.

  • I'd say he's one of the WORLD'S best songwriters! <33

  • I love Billy Joel as much as the next guy, but I don't see how a guy who's sold over 150 million albums can be considered "underrated."

  • I should have been more specific. I was just remembering the lukewarm response he got from critics in the late seventies and early eighties who were calling his music lightweigt pop.

  • I've always loved this song. And yeah, rockbertoqc, the great music might make some oblivious to the message... but it's there for those who wnt to really listen. One great musical piece.

  • i love this song

  • Thanks so much for posting. One of my favorite BJ songs - I have totally related to it - as I was an 'angry young (wo)man' when it first came out. Now, unfortunately, I've "passed the age of consciousness and righteous rage; I found that just surviving is a noble fight"

  • listen to that piano playing i the begining, wow wow wow

  • I saw this live, I couldn't believe how great he was then and now.

  • this is a gem from a decade like no other.

sure, to someone who lived through it, the 70s probably seemed like a time when there was plenty of crap floating around on the radio and tv, but for someone like me who grew up in the wasteland that was the mid to late 90s (and subsequently 2000 up to now), the 70s are a musical paradise.

  • The great music of Prelude/Angry Young Man makes to forget sometimes the message in the song. Prelude/Angry Young Man is one of the best song ever written. Everyone of us, when we're young, we have pure ideas and intentions to fight by our ideals, but time is cruel. Great Song.

  • I miss the 70's!!

  • Can't say more than: I join you. The 70's were awesome. Love Billy Joel and the feeling his music gives to me :)

  • so true

  • There's more talent shown in these five minutes of video than you'd see in a year of watching MTV these days.

  • Liberty is freaking hilarious with the fro and the mustache. Looks like that teacher from Welcome Back Kotter.

  • Be care as even if you're a fan you're not allowed a harmless joke or someone will give you a thunbs down, minus flag up! LOL

  • Liberty is Great. Shitty sound guy

  • Agreed. The mix was as awful as it could get.

But Billy is one of the greatest writers/Entertainers of our times.

  • True Rusty, the sound was hollow sounding. But EVERY act on the Mike Douglas Show had that raw uneffected vibe to it. Peter Frampton, at the height of the live album, appeared in a rare TV appearance and sounded...well, like this.

  • Billy Joel did a kick-ass job with this song. Toward the end of the song was awesome. It would be nice to add the accordion to it. Don't you think?

  • omg ..3:29 ..it's freakin corcky!!

  • Just amazing this was 31 years ago! Some of the best work by Billy Joel which is just timeless

  • this is a song with a wide changing time along all the song. it's written with this feeling of changing time during the song. that's emotion !!!

  • the drummer is good. the drum is loud but it's not a mistake of the drummer but of the mixer recording. and then it's not retarded but billy chose sometime to play it slower and sometime faster. And there's not retarded faces. don't take LSD !!!

  • Wow, Liberty's drums are real good but real LOUD! Too bad the drummer's screen wasn't around in 1975, huh!

  • well it's not so much that, but everyone's really tight together, heck billys piano is only like 5 feet from liberty's bass drum

  • BJ, almost looks like he's a little retarded in this vid ...especially when he switches to the synth .. he's making retard faces

  • LOL, that's funny, you're right...

  • Shit, what a great performance and you can only manage to insult the guy with a coment that I would normally not even bother replying to if I was not pissed!! Really uncool Maxixe!~!!!

  • Wow! BJ had a lot more hair back then, huh?!

  • Most certainly a great album, followed by the smash "The Stranger",and followed by the equally great "52nd Street".I consider Billy's music from the 70's through the mid-seventies to be the best.

  • Please come by and check out my rendition of "Prelude/Angry Young Man"

  • Russell sounds like his balls haven't dropped yet! LOL

  • AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i absolutely looooove billy joel he's amazing!

  • He should put a DVD out of the archive footage. It's pretty fun to watch the band back in the day.
