Mussorgsky was largely untrained in music. After his death Rimsky-Korsikov took his work and made it more "melodic" and that's the Mussorgsky we have today. His early work, like this operatic adaptation of Alexander Pushkin's Boris Godunov are very dark and brooding, with the passion of an artist who feels the music and not the sounds popular at the time. I think Mussorgsky could have enjoyed this for what it is.

On the contrary, I would think that Mussorgsky would have enjoyed this rendition. It uncovers moods that get somewhat lost in symphonic versions, while retaining the essence. And Mussorgsky, like all geniuses, would not be fond of being fossilized and mortified.
