I have never heard an orisa song that says HEY Obatala, Obatala hey...... Ibaye Obatala, Obatala orisa ire. Ibaye means to rest in peace so why is he saying Ibaye Obatala? The only traditional song he sang was Baba Fururu. Obatala has his specific beats and dances, none of them include the shimmy. This person dancing who pretending to be "touched" was nothing more than her running out of breathe and getting tired.
Many people learned a gr8 deal about our religion that day because the elder wasnt as concerned with partying and passing the rum as he was with teaching & embracing all present while giving the Yawo his blessing.
I was initiated by this house & I've also worked the Santo room of a Lucumi initiation. There is NOTHING missing from this presentation of the Yawo besides the respect she deserves by all in this forum. Secret rituals remain secret, this presentation is public & should be regarded as such. This wasnt an initiation or bembe.
What exactly do these people think they are doing or practicing? Obatala, Obatala HEYYYYY Wow !!! just when you think you have seen it all you get stuff like this. Why the hell was he saying Ibaye Obatala? Is this lady suppose to be a Iyawo? Wow I have so many questions. LOL! Next time I'm at a Bembe I'm going to start singing Obatala, Obatala Heeyyy and see if i can get a Konga Line started. LMAO This is such a joke.
I see it this way Every house of santo is different example some say that gay people cannot get scrapped cause the spirit wont recognize it. 2. that obatala oshun or yemaya cant be scrapped aal I am trying to say is this houses are different if this is the way they do it we must respect it. I respect everyones rules. but in our house we are thought to respect maferefun obatala
The presentation of the iyawo is quite different, it has a very distinct American interpretation to it. I prefer the older traditional way, the use of the sacred drums, sacred oriki, orin,,shaved ori etc.I hope the iyawo received good training in this ancient tradition and many blessings from Obatala. New Age Yoruba is very different but she looks pleased.
Obatala Say what, not someone with a computer. Obatala may have settled and reached out to the children of africa and others, but don't get it twisted this is an Africa Religion, so powerful the captors practice it today. How Iya dances with or from Obatala has nothing to do with anyone but she and Obatala. Lets make a comparision what the responses are are basically saying u know better....uh huh that's like Marv Albert telling michael Jordon how to play basketball.
Your comments lack any real respect. Nothing in Ifa says that everything has to pressed from your cookie cutter. Just a simple look at the videos to the right of this one would prove that statement true.
The purpose of this dance was to unite the initiate with Obatala. This was evidenced by the touch at the end of the video. So many people miss that and it's sad. Where is your iwa? Peace in Ifa/Orisha despite your disrepect.
real music?what do you mean by real music?wow, black people can't praise in peace.peace to you, whatever path you took.but, you don't own the musical copyright on spiritualism.Alafia.
well what i meant was the more traditional music of the traditions wether it be traditional yoruba or afro cuban brazilian ect sure you can wroship how you whant but to properly call orisha you have to know drum language and conversation or atleast oraly enough to comunicate through oriki odu kaure
receiving negative reviews from people here only reinforces the fact that some people have some serious problems with bigotry. if a BABA, who was trained and strengthened in AFRICA was there, who is BABA KARADES' elder, has no problem with this, then, neither should you. when you write world-selling books on the religion and garner praise and admiration like these BABAS have done, then,we will see what YOU know. YOU SHOULD HOPE TO BE LIKE THESE TWO MEN. BECAUSE I DO.ALAFIA.
there's alot of bigotry going on with some of these comments. if you say you are an aborisha, then you should not bring your iwa buru here. no one does not have a lock on orisha worship. if you can intelligently show your points do so. with iwa pele. some people here just by their comments show that there houses aren't in order........alaafia!!!!!!!
Modupe O. It is good to se iwa pele and good reason when it is being presented. May the Irunmole bless you for seeing what so few really see but are too locked into fear and ego to appreciate. Ashe.
I never looked to the Orisha so that you or anyone would validate me. Only Orunmila, Orisha, the Egun, my Elders and my family but not your groups. No offense but you haveno copyright on the Egun who died to keep this tradition alive. Mine did just like yours.
I could comment more but I have nothing to prove to you or anyone else. I just wonder what orisha gave you permission t be profane in speech. Where is your iwa? Peace and space.
Aside from the opinionated arrogance, the rythm and chants are ridiculus! Orisha and Ifa traditions spans thousands of years. while there is certainly space for creativity, what you are doing is an invention, where you can be the Graet Chihuawa! I know of many folks taken advantage by opportunists claiming to be Babalawos, Babalochas and Iyalochas by virtue of being "Black" and having read a few books!
Rythms and chants have thousands of years of history! Not bullshit you sing and play!
ABO RU ABO YE ABO SISE BABA.first off this is the celebration afterwards. check the yoruba vids and see how fast they play.its faster. but when celebrating, speed doesn't matter. it's your intent. look at victor ludovic.he has three batas and his rythmn is the same. and then it progressively gets faster.and plz don't come in here insulting when you are of a different faith.ALAAFIA!
First off.All you jokers who have posted ignorant comments have yet to prove your legitemacy as priest. For all we know your Ile could be bogus. Secondly,Baba and his Oluo have gained wide respect for there work in Ifa in their community and internationally.Thirdly, they have top selling books on Ifa and orisa todate. So next time be informative with your comments and maybe, just maybe you gain that same prestige through wisdom/iwa pele and spreading ifa.Not for fame or fortune.
Theres no honor in insulting Awos/elders of the tradition. Criticism w/o respect does not lead to progress and is rooted in baseless opinion. Theres an assualt on African-American orisa religiosity and it must CEASE NOW. We too will worship and give praise. What you see above is an African American celebration of the birth of an Obatala priest. Permission to praise or validation in how it is done is neither requested nor required for viewers to appreciate the achievement of the newly crowned Iya
Ogbo Ato, Dupe O! I want to thank you for seeing the real reason why this and other videos were put on this site and more important, one of the many reasons why we come to the Orisha. I hope he bridge between Nigeria and the Americas grow stronger and wider so that we can continue to return to tradition.
The Odu-Ifa says that no Babalawo should be disrespected, even a young diviner. My grandmother said if you don't anything good to say then don't say anything.
Is this what you come to Ifa/Orisha to do? I didn't come to the Irunmole to criticize anyone. I'll never understand why people feel that they have the right to criticize others. Ifa Temple of Light continues to stand for the children of Africa to return to tradition and to help heal human beings.African traditions are the birthright of all of Africa's children not just those who can say they are from a certain place or they have been involved for so long. In time I hope you can see wisdom.
i strongly agree with 77pedro its been 14 years that i have been innitiated with obbatala.and i have never seen a ceremony of innitiation like this not in the u.s. or cuba
i dont mean to disrespect anyone our religion gets enough bad publicity.we dont need any more.......................
When people make commments like this, you are being direspectful. No one has a copyright or trademark on Ifa or Orisha. We don't have to do anything like any of you. We don't put you down, so don't put us down! Ifa says, "No babalawo should be disrespected even a young diviner." I won't waste anymore of my time trying to compete with what amounts to iwa-buru.
This is a beatiful video. I feel the love for the Orisha everwhere in this video. I am crowned a daughter to Eshu. Ochun is my mama, however, I have very close ties to Obatala (Obatala put me at the door and Eshu opened it). Forever grateful to Obatala I am. I walked threw that door - never to look back. I am proud of my Religion & I respect all my elders and those before me, upon who's shoulders we stand. Thank you for sharing this beatiful moment. Ashe
To all who gave their pro's and con's: This video seems to have been done from the heart and the person receiving seems happy. Olofin hears and sees all. Yburu Boya. OgbeTua, Susie
Thank you for seeing what we intended everyone to see. Notwithstanding there are many things going on in this video that everyone seems to be missing.
I appreciate your right to comment on this video. However, I not only disagree, but as the producer and editor of this clip, I know better. I have that knowledge for many reasons. One of them is actually at the end of the video. If you missed it I invite you to watch it again.
