  • I engaged myself to you..

  • I love Anathema, grretings from the Czech republic:)

  • This reminds me on Russian folk songs.

  • ♥...

  • my favourite... don't give a shit about correctiveness of the lyrics

  • I love to hear Anneke promise something in french with a dutch accent !

  • @thankGodforDavidG hahaha

  • This band came from Heavens...

  • I'm French, and it's impossible for me to understand anything in that song. So many BIG mistakes, and a very strange accent, for me, the lyrics are unreadable, thanks to the english translation because I was completely lost with the franch one. I don't really like that song. Anyway, Anathema stays a very good band, I like their albums.

  • @Madbat84 Yeah, I watched an interview with Daniel about the Falling Deeper album (where they left this song instrumental) and he said they were really embarrassed about the "pigeon French" and several mistakes that came in the translation with the original.

I pledged myself, I pledged myself, I pledged myself to you...

  • 1)ghareeeba kteer

    2)btshbhnee kteeeeer...

    tfaj2et be 7ali awwal mrra sme3t-ha.. 5ososi 3n shajar el safsaaf!

thnx for (you) ... you push me towards myself like I never thought it would happen..

I wish this disappears so skies won't hear and destroy...

  • Really amazing. If I listen this song in every single seconds in my life, would it be enough to get rid of that melancholy which I carry for years and years....

  • the version on falling Deeper is amazing !

  • Man, Darren White has some serious range.

  • Magic...Greeks love Anathema!!

  • best song ever

Good song in spite of a very bad use of french, both in translation and in pronounciation.

  • @Karthagus it's difficult when translating into another language... like spelling pronunciation correctly for example ;)

  • @scouserfourteen yeah it's difficult for me not to make mistakes when I write quickly in a foreign language, as I speak several languages...It's easier when you speak only one.

  • Language doesn't really matter. Anathema can create magic under every circumstance.

  • esa cancion debería ser mas larga

  • @jamepho Lo bueno dura poco

  • The lyrics are supposed to say "the way the willow leans over the stream". They user "La voix" which means "the way" but in the same sense as "which way should i go". They should have user La maniere.. which would mean "the way" in the sense they want it. But maybe saying "La maniere dont le saule s'incline au dessus du ruisseau" would not find with the melody haha.. beautiful song anyway ^_^

  • Goddammit, you people and your pointless arguments ruin anything.

  • Fuck you frensh peopls no one cares about your fucking pronouncement.

  • I'm french and i do not car about the mistakes, it's sincere and beautiful !!

  • @UnwieldyFrench well, google was found in 1998 and this song is from 1992 album. Another stupid french moron... :-/

  • @UnwieldyFrench +1 lol

  • @UnwieldyFrench

Well, don't give lessons if you also make mistakes while translating.

  • @UnwieldyFrench this song was writen in 1993! Google translator didn't exist!

  • someone has the video vith that gilr singing? I'd like to see it

  • strange, there was no google translate when they made this song... how could have they managed to write/sing in such an awfully broken French, it is still a mystery to me...

  • I just imagine my self with this girl singing and me playing the guitar , both lost in the deep forest

  • brilliant, just pure and make me recall an afternoon which was lived in an uncertain summer..

  • Ooooh her accent is so cute! ^^ Too bad the lyrics are not really correct in French but who cares? We can understand the mood and what she means just by listening to her voice. Great atmosphere for a song. Sorry for my English, I'm French :).

  • late autumn nights, cold...this song kept my soul warm. it's pure...

  • Wuisseau FTW

  • wonderful video - and video - thank you - lg gitte

  • I am transported to an preternatural plane as I listen to this.

  • criant pour le monte not criant pout l amant

  • I wanna hear Anathema in Swahili

  • thnx for the lyrics!!! in the 90's i never understand the lyrics and i speak french!!!

but the song is one of my favourites of all times

  • Full of merriment, also melancholy, but always melodic.

  • that's another pure music....pure art...my mind just flows trough this song

  • I Made A Promise ( J'ai Fait Une Promesse ) Great Guitarist Who is he?

  • @whatevergetoverit Danny cavanagh O_o :P

and probably vincent cavanagh too =)

  • went i got this album I was on doom death metal only, this song has change my life! and also 40 bucks poor than before, dam this was back in the day.

  • @Brafmah hahahaha , worth 40 bucks man!!!

listen to more of their new songs , i recommend some of their songs like inner silence , or alternative 4 , still kinda close to doom stuff :D

  • The fact she has an accent is not the worse thing...

The fact that the lyrics don't make any sense in French, that is bad & stupid.

I mean, if they wanted to make a song in french, they could at least write in a right way and write something with a true meaning, not just the words thew known...

  • I'm so glad Anathema made songs in french. And who should really care about how the accent is ? Of course I'm french and can hardly recognize what she sings but Art is not limited to an accent, if it was, then everyone would put the shame on Nina Simone when she sings "Ne Me Quitte Pas" (watch?v=TI8F6DbB2cE). If you can not make the difference between Art talent and Real TV programs then you have a serious program.

I would also be curious to see how criticizers here speak a stranger language...

  • esto es muy emo.

  • @JoseFruguletti1972 tu es muy tonto...

  • Hei dudes. Is it french? Or dialect?

  • i was looking for a more doom sound but this is great aswell, she sings very well

  • I don't think I could sing as good as her!

  • well this is song and not an elementary school french language class. so ... who carres about language mistakes ... the music and the voice are just perfect

  • well it's not easy to sing in a language you don't understand.i'd like to see all those who say she can't sing in french trying to sing in russian,or some other difficult language they don't know.i understand french and i didn;t recognise a single word but it doesn't matter.it a melodic song.just listen to it.or don't if her pronunciation really others you

  • 2x: Là vois le saule qui s'incline au dessus du ruisseau;

    Comme une personne qui en descent pour attendre l'amant;

    Je me rapelle de l'automne, pressée dans sa révérence;

    Je me suis engagée

    Je me suis engagée

    Je me suis engagée;

    À vous.

    Je me suis engagée,

    Je me suis engagée,

    I pledged myself to you

  • @AgemIronn

I think at the end she actually sings "I pledge myself to you", and not "pledged"..

That is present, so is it then wrong to say

    " je me engageé"??

  • @JaneInsane2

if its present, its: Je m'engage

  • @JaneInsane2 if it's present, it is "je m'engage"

  • at first i did not know it was french. mon dieu. i thought it was some flamand old language

  • i love it !

does any one has a link for a free mp3 download ?

  • She can't sing one word of french...I have asked french people, if they know the language she's singing in, and none of them recognised it as french...what a shame, because the song is actually quite nice....

  • who fuckin cares about french...Anathema can speak in any language...i would be grateful if theu wrote a song in my language (italian) an wouldn't mind if they did mistakes

  • From the way they are written in french, the lyrics say: (i recreated the actual sentence structure, missing words and bad grammar included, but its too bad i cannot recreate bad gender choice in english)

The path, the willow leans on top the stream

like a person who gets himself down, yelling for the lover

remembers me of fall before you kneeled

    i've plegded myself

    to you

  • Periergo kommati den tairiazei poly me ta ypoloipa tou Serenades. Min ksexname oti paizan katharo Doom Metal tote..

  • Je m'ai engagée. Je ME SUIS engagée !

  • putain on comprend rien !!! o_O

  • love this song i almost teared up when i first heard it

  • je m'ai engagee a vous...

  • It's Gaelic, not French nor English.

  • @Blueyefinity

Bullshit. Of course it's french! Read the lyrics in the description.

  • @soulstormblues1977

its french with a lot of horribles mistakes.

    But the effort is good

  • Yes, her french is horrible, but I STILL love this song! Better than the whole new album by Anathema ("we are here because we're here"), which is kind of a dissappointment. And I'm saying this as a hardcore fan of this band who owns all their regular albums and their rare stuf and travels hundreds of miles to see them live in a small club.

They're still my favorite band, though. And ever will be. I love Anathema.

  • her accent is so thick, it makes it really hard to understand .... and I'm French !!!! No offence but your transcription of the lyrics is not correct.... it doesn't make any sense in French....

  • beautiful outro!

  • Woh, her french is horrible:O

  • watch?v=zZMGFtrF_z4

  • Never trust Google translation!

The lyrics mean nothing in French.

  • I'm french, I'm an big Anathema fan, if I really don't understand the lyrics (frankly it sound like japanese or spanish for me) I understand the sweet music and like it.

  • After hearing this I can die now

  • wow. have always loved this song, and these pictures are so beautiful & perfect...thank you!

  • Great song brings back memories. Good work with theslideshos as well. Oh and for those of you whom continue to bitch about the grammer how about you listen to some rap and correct their English? If you don't like it don't listen

  • SO WHAT??Est le français??ALL THE TIME THE SOVINISTIC PROBLEM THAT U HAVE IN FRANCE...DECIDE TO SPEAK IN ENGLISH OR ΙΝ ANY OTHER LANGUAGE EXCEPT FOR FRENCH FIRSTLY AND THEN TELL US... IT S NOT ENOUGH IF SOMEONE TRIES TO SPEAK FRENCH..U WANT HIM TO BE ABLE TO SPEAK WITH PARISIENNE ACCENT...OMG

  • @myrtomyrto I agree in a way. But in fact French is a horrible language to learn with many exceptions, many ways to write what you hear etc. A French who learns English will have less problem to deal with.

  • @Aksvarn

yes, im french and its fucking true ;) My english is horrible but i never really learn it.

  • In my opinion one of the best songs ever made, who cares about the pronouncement. Just listen to the beauty of this song and let your mind flow. I wish there where more songs like this, listen to the music and not the words.

  • @joepenguus I wouldn't be surprised if they just changed the pronunciation to make it sound more interesting. Sounds more Latin to me than anything else. Which is good, basically, because it adds a certain exotic dimension to the lyrics. I agree with all you said.

  • @joepenguus being best is relative ;) but it is nice anyway ;)

  • @joepenguus Well said,,great song from an unbelievable band.Respect.

  • I am also french and this is definitely NOT french. She pronounces the french words as if they were english. For exemple, the word "L'amant" is pronounced "L'ey-man" because in english, A = Ey. Well it's supposed to sound like "Ah!" as in "A-pple" ... A-mant. But still, very good song...

  • I'd bet on some Gaelic or Celtic dialect. They has both english pronounciation and french-like sound.

  • @SkinnyAssassin it is French, it's just a, well... moderately butchered version of it haha. I think her native tongue just isn't french, so her pronunciation is off. Great song, and I think part of the appeal to this song for me, is in fact the odd sound of the language.

  • there's a lot of comments saying this isn't the pronunciation. lol i think someone should post a vid with the correct way cause its really a beautiful song to sing.

  • it s verry nice..anathema is magic.. Nomade Steps is on UTUBE just for you, listen

  • Nice music and great video. I like it very much!

  • it does not sound like french meaby english version would be better hmm

    Annyway I love it!

  • i teach french in france i love anathema

BUT it makes no fucking sense (unless it s pretended real creative poetry) you dig?

  • I'm french..... that doesn't sound french, but I love her prononciation! It still sounds well.

  • magistrale composition

  • My french friend actually went "What language is this supposed to be in??" haha.

Save the obvious bad french she said it was a beautiful and haunting song, and I agree :)

  • Oh my, how i remember to be so impressed with this beautifull song in the 90s when i got this cd...

  • looks like they weren't really thinking at the time when they made this particular song ;)

  • I love this song, even though the lyrics are not really french. Who cares? Just think of it as elvish or something... :D

  • That's true, Anathema did a very WEIRD thing. I am french, this is very bad x)

Anathema is one of my favorite bands, and if this song is great musically, the lyrics don't make sense AT ALL XD

  • Also, it's "l'automne", not "d'automne"

"ta révérence" and not "ton révérence"

"je m'ai engagée" and not "je me suis engagée"

And, well, "pressée dans ta révérence" ? This means "hurried in your reverence".. don't even know it it makes sense in english.

Anyway, nice idea, and nice english lyrics, really dark (almost lugubrious) and melancholic song!

  • Sorry, but I can't understand anything unless I look at the lyrics, and I speak french too.

"dessus du ruisseau" should be "au-dessus", and I don't hear "dessus", I hear, more or less, "dessous", which would mean.. under the stream, heh! (But, well, agreed, french pronounciation is hard)

  • Also, "se descend", well, I *think* "se descendre" is okay in the context, but "se" wasn't needed, also note that "qui se descend" may be a slang meaning "who kills himself", since I often heard "descends-le" (kill him) in movies from france.

Also, "crying", in english, has two different meanings I think, and should be translated here as "pleurer" (weeping), but is translated as "criant", which only means: screaming!

  • great song , thanks for posting!!!

  • quit whining about the song, its a great song. Just leave it at that rather then going on how the grammar is wrong. Don't be all uppity about it

  • I'm a 16 years old french and i can say to you that you can understand nothing of the lyrics without read it! worst, every single sentences are wong! i like anathema a lot but if they do a french song, they must to do it right!

  • I'm sure anathema knew what they were saying

The lyrics look fine in french

    The translation is just off

  • Great job, you entertained me well.

  • beauu!!

  • there are some mistakes in the song..they should consulting a french person before writing the song!!!

  • @jazeera986

who is caring about it :) still magnificent song even with mistakes! :)

  • can some translate it into turkish cos i like this song very much but i dont know what it means :(

  • (:hey!I found the translation!( i am not sure that it is right...i found it in the internet..sorry for my english..i am from greece)

  • Lyrics:

Me rapelle d'automne, presse dans ton reverence, Reminds Me Fall bültenleri sizin saygı içinde,

je m'ai engagee a vous... Ben ... başlattığınız love me

  • [Edebi Çeviri]

There, look, the willow clings over the river, Orada, bak nehir üzerinde söğüt Clings,

Like a person who bows down, crying for the lover.

Reminds me of Autumn, [when] you were kneeling, Reminds me of Autumn, [zaman] sen, diz çökmüş edildi

I engaged myself to you... Seninle kendimi meşgul ...

  • I speak french everyday, i'm a Québécois or a Canadian French. And i have to say the English people in general, who learn speak french always pronounce words one after another with a different intonation. Wich is the reality of the english language. In french they have one intonation by sentence. That make the song of her word broken by her accent, but that don't make difference for her, she have a beautiful voice anyway.

  • this band...is the definition of beautyfull music...they are....trully genious.

  • seranades was an lp the ep was crest fallen

  • My first language is french and I can say it's their failed try to use the french pronounciation correctly that makes the lyrics incomprehensible. All the rest is excellent music though.

  • Have you ever learn music in school ? It's acceptable...

: ( DOMMAGE!!

  • well, i dont speak french, but one day i will.

maybe next year, i hope :)

  • UnDiable13, you're right about the massacre of the French language in this song, but I think it's the French who are less tolerant , proof?: you've posted this in French knowing fair well that most people can't speak it, let alone read it. Maybe I should have posted this inRomanian,it would have been only fair, right? :PI myself dread what they've made out of the french words here, it's indeed austentatious, only it doesn't manage to overthorow the beautiful music, voice and the delicat message

  • I believe that for native French speaker it may be unacceptable. But for me, non French speaker is really nice, mostly, like you have mentioned before for melody.

  • Where the hell does this song come from? I thought I own all Anathema albums. Well, I love it!

  • Album is called: Anathema - Serenades.

  • it is from the serenades EP before they were mainstream

  • Amazing voice !! Amazing Melodies !!

Who F@#kin' care about bad accent ?

  • If it was your language, you would care. But the problem isn't about the accent, cause the problem in here is the traduction and the pronunciation which are only french for the words, not the syntax of the sentences.

  • I'm in the "who bleedin cares" camp. There are loads of songs with terrible grammar and badly pronounced english (take any song by Immortal for example) but that dosen't detract from the songs.

  • bad accent,it sounds like japanese or an asian language, not french.Still got to give them credit for the song,it relaxes me

  • Bad accent

  • The play better music than they write french, that's for sure. ^^

  • es divino este tema

  • Very funny ^^

I'm french and i listen anathema for a long time, but i have never listened this song, and the accent is very funny for a french person ^^

  • The way the willow leans over the brook Like a

person dropping down, crying for his lover The way

the willow leans over the brook Like a person

dropping down, crying for his lover Reminds me of

last autumn when, bowing down, I pledged myself, I

pledged myself, I pledged myself to you. I pledged

myself, I pledged myself, I pledged myself to you.

  • here is another translation it has slang in it some words are not french

The way the willow leans over the brook

Like a person dropping down, crying for his lover

The way the willow leans over the brook

Like a person dropping down, crying for his lover

Reminds me of last autumn when, bowing down,

I pledged myself, I pledged myself, I pledged myself to you.

I pledged myself, I pledged myself, I pledged myself to you.

  • The, sees, the willow inclines itself over stream, as a person that descends itself, screaming for the lover

The, sees, the willow inclines itself over stream, as a person that descends itself, screaming for the lover

Me fall rapelle, in a hurry in your reverence, I have myself engagee I have myself engagee I have myself

    engagee has you...

I have myself engagee I have myself engagee I pledged myself à you.

  • I love this song !

  • If I might give a little advice: I would change the bow over the stream, to lean over the brook. My french is not that virtuose, but I think it sounds more poetic, more justice to the - very poetic - lyrics.
