  • Very nice review! I agree on every single word you said in this video! And the artwork on labels, catalogs, boxes and manuals was wonderful indeed! Especially the early artwork!

  • Tapper Q-Bert River Raid Warlords Berzerk Chopper Command Atlantis Frogger Yar's Revenge Wizard of Wor -------------------------- HONORABLE MENTIONS: Pole Position, Buck Rogers Planet of Zoom, Space Invaders, Vanguard, Stampede, Etc... EXCELLENT VIDEO MARK! My SEARS TELE-GAMES still rests beneath its canvas cover w/ the TELE-GAMES logo printed on it... :)
  • I miss catalogs like these.. as a kid I would spend hours looking through these, making wish lists of all kinds of games my family could never afford to buy me!

  • atari is the only console to have wood

  • @TheSonicsatAM Hey representing SatAM! Probably my favorite show ever, nice.

I assume you were making a joke, but yeah some Atari competitors/predecessors (pong consoles) did have wood-grain motifs as well. Most notably the Intellivision.

  • @TheSonicsatAM No the mattel Intellivision and Fairchild channel F had Wood

  • Moonpatrol, berzerk and MANY MANY more...

  • Home Brew.........

  • centipede, asteroids, dodge em, and yars revenge are awesome

  • My Favourites are. Adventure, Jungle Hunt, Pitfall and Dig Dug.

  • I have the RealSports Football, Baseball, and Tennis carts, if that helps with anything.

  • my favorites are yars revenge tied with pitfall #1

  • Aww! No ET? LOL

  • @sirbargearse

ET came out for the Holiday of 1982.

This is a 1982 catalog. ET wasn't out yet.

  • I've seen the binder at a local game store. I don't have an Atari, but if I get one I'm getting the binder. Should I get a six switch or a four switch system?

  • My Friend Has the Atari Game Center and it holds alot of games!

  • Coincidentally, I was holding a copy of one when I found this video...

  • for me... 1. Missle Command 2. Defender II 3. Ms. Pac Man 4. Dodge Em 5. Kaboom! 6. Home Run 7. Demon Attack 8. Laser Blast 9. Berzerk 10. Centipede
  • i wish i had an atari 2600

  • TT Nostalgic

  • I LOVE Atari 2600 catalogs, the art works in them & also the cart/box art! I remember flipping through them, looking @/waiting to buy new games. When my dad & I bought our Atari in '77, I remember we would go the the store every week & buy each/every new game as it was released. This went on until 3rd party games. Too many/expensive after that. I REALLY love your channel/videos BTW. When it comes to vintage/classic/retro gaming, there's nobody else out there who can touch you! :-)

  • i have that

  • i have that

  • MAN awesome review Mark. It really takes me back, I used to lay in bed and gaze into the excellent illustrations on each page. The catalog was great for when I had to be in bed and wasn't allowed near the atari, lol. I must have been 7 years old.

  • @NWNisFUN Same here man, same here! Aren't this guys videos just the best?!?! The Atari artwork was awesome though. What about the cartridge box art? That was great too. BTW, Atariage has many scans of catalogs & box art, just in case your interested & want to check them out, for nostalgia & what not. I often read them & think about reading the same catalogs as a child, 30+ years ago. I try to remember where I was, what I was doing, etc, & how bad a wanted a particular game in the catalog

  • I have never owned an atari, but I just bought atari collection for nds and I love those games.

  • I wonder if my parents still have this book

  • well there are homebrew games and i think the 12th one on your list would be halo 2600 wich is like berzerk with master cheif and convenet thats my recomendation of game for you

  • only if atari games looked like the artwork on the book...

  • You Know I Think I Did Here That Song In A Porno Before.

  • Anyone Know The Name Of The Song That Starts At 54 Seconds It's An Awesome Beat.

  • I have this catalog. Except it's the 45 game cartridge one. Different pictures but same cover.

  • Great background music. 2008 and 2009 videos were so awesome. Don't get me wrong newer CGR videos are great! But Mark's ego has enlarge since then and now he gets distracted with everything in his reviews! =(

  • look how happy this kids are, playing the Atari 2600,,, with his dog...

  • I have that catalog

  • The real Atari is long dead, but there are still fans making new games for the system and putting them on new cartridges with labels, awesomely enough.

  • It's a rotten shame companies don't put as much effort into their catalogs and manuals anymore. It shows lack of care, and the best marketing comes from solid material like the catalog you're reviewing. Good designers are not overpriced, so that's not why modern day catalogs are so "blah" by comparison.

  • @HypnoToad72

Heck, most Companies don't even include manuals in their games anymore. The instructions are all in game. Remember when Nintendo manuals were ACTUALLY helpful?

  • That was cool

  • thats the american dream made me wanna puke

  • @jacobgovan You might want to get that checked out then.

  • 16 people are Xbox Dicks

  • The catalog art is awesome. I remember spending hours as a kid just looking at the art for the games i didnt have (yet).

  • "Been a little slow lately" I burst out laughing :x.

  • Its funny how most of the atari games just suck, but still atari just makes (i have to admit) good artwork. Wtf?

  • I have that catalog!

  • hey i got this catalog to.

  • I have an Atari 2600 and it has one cord sticking out of it and it looks like something I've never seen before, what do I need to get it to work?

  • @comradsausage23 you need to get a special box or go to radioshack and talk about a rf to coax thing.

  • @whoisthecat Why thank you, Radio shack? Really they might have one?

  • @comradsausage23 yeah they will my box broke.

  • Berzerk, Yar's Revenge and Combat are worthy, but most of the best 2600 games were made by Activision. Space Invaders? Defender? Pac-man?...terrible, terrible ports.

  • @LordelX Space Invaders was a good port and so is defender. Pac-man was the only bad atari port you mentioned.

  • @LordelX Space invaders was THE arcade port. It's the cartridge that established the paradigm of arcade hits on a home games console. It was a tremendous achievement for its time, and I always liked it more than the arcade version. The home version was more tense and spooky, and the aliens had more personality. Didn't much care for the 112 variations, but that was a convention of the era. Definitely a must-have for the Atari 2600.

  • You forgot ASTEROIDS.

  • Ah yes, the educational games - aka the ones kids prayed their parents wouldn't buy them for Christmas.

  • I have a different atari catalog which is pretty much the same thing except instead of cool graphics it has really scary and stupid looking cartoon drawings.

  • Where is asteroids???

  • @Supersourcrout 0:32, Watch the video before you comment

  • @bioo80 I DID watch the whole video THEN comment. I was saying that asteroids isn't in his top 11

  • @Supersourcrout Neither was Adventure. This was just to start a Collection. BTW Asteroids is overrated.

  • Being a child of the 90s, I never got to see these ads for in house Atari games. Wow did they do a good job.

  • There are only three of those simulated-wood-grain Atari Game Centers known to still be in existence and two of them are in the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles.

The third is rumored to be in the Palace of the Crown Prince, Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud in Riyadh. But that has not been confirmed.

  • is Maze Craze 1 player?

  • i actually recomend activision games if you want to start a collection... most of them are well done, and the label generally give an acurate depiction of the game instead of nice art and sub par game play

  • Top Ten to Top Eleven... Taking a step up ahead. Huh, that reminds me of Nostalgia Critic's Top 11s.

  • Thanks for this jump in the past. Wonderful.

  • im going to get an atari today and maybe a nes

  • id go with hero as being one of the best games for the console, i think new comers might be able to get into it. when i was new to it recently i managed fine with it

  • Darn you video game crash!!! We totally missed out on the "super realistic, life like" graphics. Due to that, we had to wait a decade for games to even look realistic. Sigh :((

  • @tigresuave11 LOL I get your joke. I'm imagining Atari coming up with something better than Blu-Ray back in '82(even though CD's aren't the norm yet!)and ditched it when the crash happened.

  • @n00berania

    :(( We can only imagine.

I can see the commercial now...

Alan Wake for the Atari 2600 coming summer 1984

It totally could have been part of the sword quest series, just call it lightworld.

  • I recently got an Atari 2600 on ebay (recieved it today!) and it came with most of these games. I Am missing Bezerk, Defender and Super Breakout that I will want among others not on this list =P

  • He reads "ATARI creates new game program cartridges all the time." He then says "Thay have been a little slow lately." :-) LOL

  • That's exactly what future looks like.

  • pele gave my aunty a rose when she was in hospital

  • I like Air-Sea Battle. I would add that to the starting collection.

  • 00:55 What song is that? I wanna listen to it.

  • The covers for 2600 games were awesome. And as you said, some covers were actually more exciting than the games themselves. But still very distinct and special.

  • That book's marketing was a head of their time

  • The video game crash happened around 1984. but the Atrari 7800 did have a limited success shortly after.

  • hej whats cold the game that u drive bike and make walls from you back that others bikes crash?

  • @ohujaly Tron

  • I actually have that exact catalog along with a few others that I found at a flea market in a box that I bought from a hippie.

  • emulators, simple FREE and fun

  • what's the name of the music starting from 0:55?

  • And he really hit the nail on the head when he said, "They don't make them like this anymore." Think about it...when was the last time you found yourself holding an actual game catalog? Let alone one with beautiful artwork.

  • @Skyrift

Yep you are right. I still have this catalog and I remember looking through this as a kid and I really enjoyed using my imagination while reading through the book. Plus the art was really imaginative and excellent too.

  • @Skyrift yeah, it's all internet and tv commercials now...

  • @Skyrift Easy. When the internet catalogs replaced paper ones. We still have catalogs, and much better looking that that, but they're online, that's all.

Nostalgia is great, but some people get blinded by it. The past wasn't better or worse, just different.

  • @Skyrift umm ign magazine, playstation magazine, and theres more not trying to pick an argument but there are plenty of good game catalogs or atleast the equivelant of a game catalog

  • @Skyrift When was the last time you held a full color book that involved games at all? Yeah PSOne era MAYBE. :| sad times.

  • @Snotnarok lol nintendo power is still around

  • @ignika98 1/4th as good as it was as I hear

  • Oh man I remember these catalogs. That picture on the inside cover really said it all...that era of gaming was classic and timeless.

Sure the technology was primitive. The gameplay was simplistic and the graphics were as base as it gets. But none of that matters...the 2600 still holds a special place with old school gamers for it's sheer awesomeness.

  • i was gonna buy an atari 2600 since it was the very first system i ever remember playing at the age of 2. But Im a kid of the Nintendo Era, and the graphics and sound on the atari really put me off. :(

  • i remember this playing with my best friend in Russia but this is old now bro but it's still cool...;)

  • Comment removed

  • After seeing this video I had to get a atari catalog of my own so I got the 1982 catalog with the 49 games and I also got a 1981 catalog with 45 games along with my 2600 vader's manuel for about $9.00 what a deal.

  • I have air-sea battle but I have no idea what im doing

  • "super realistic graphics " ahh the good old times =)

  • wow... i have that atari game center... its pure awesomeness!

  • i didnt grow up with atari but when i was like 3 or 4 we had a 2600 with the game center and the only game i remember playing with my family was the firetruck game!

  • i remember havin the game center but i never used it cause i liked to have them on the shelf to be seen ^^

  • Love the porno music playing when we get to the game center. :D

  • What music playing when video begins after the intro?

  • My maze craze was actually called maze mania but had the same decal on the cart and it was the same game. Something I had i never see are the atari comics. Not the full size dc comics, but the smaller ones that were the same size as the atari game catalog that came to atari force members only. Wish I still had those, they were alot of fun. My favorite 2 player game for the 2600 was SURROUND.

  • omg this takes me back. The image on the Adventure series was My favorite. :D

  • I LOVE classic gaming! I have a couple Atari pre-2600 dedicated pong/breakout systems, Atari 2600,5200,7800, Intellivision, Bally Astrocade, Magnavox Odyssey 1 & 2, 3000,4000, Fairchild Channel F, Emerson Arcadia 2001 & an old Coleco dedicated pong type system. & of course, Emulators up the butt. Gotta love'em. Every Atari console game ever made, Every C=64 disk. Basically everything up to & including Nintendo 64, along with the TOSEC/Goodsets. (Meaning every piece of software ever made)

  • God I miss the good old Atari days! I have a couple old catalogs like that. BTW am I the only 1 who thinks vintage Atari "art" drawings in the catalogs & on certain cartridge boxes & cases is really cool? Like "Break out, Street Racer, Combat, Video Olympics, Air Sea Battle, etc. I thought some were really cool looking. Check out the DVD cover art for "The Venture Brothers" season 3. It has an "Atari Art" homage thing going on. Looks really cool! & finally, "Have you played Atari today? ;-)

  • @gjc82071 "Have you played Atari today? ;-)" i wish! lol but i dont have 1. =(

  • no problem..just download the emulator : D

  • emulators are soo fake unless they actually look like the system and take carts. i use EMUs but i prefer originals.

  • in no particular order. centepede yars revenge berzerk mario bros joust space invaders atroids missile command war lords super breakout enduro top 11 atari games.
  • I have that book! pretty cool but I have the rebranded sears telegames atari 2600 pretty rare i guess

  • I bought an atari 2600 with 29 games and 6 controllers

and a gator skin leather game carrying case at the flea market plus it didn't come with fleas for $25 and a taser for $5 dollars Thats half the price of a new game

  • i recently bought missle command combat defender andair sea battle in a lot with the boxes and instructions and two other games and got the atari 1981 catalouge. It is similar to this catalouge but it has a couple less games in it.

  • Wow!! I forgot all about Atari.

Now that i think about it.

I have some of that old stuff out in an old storage building actually.

Not sure what all is out there.

I know i have the Atari 2600 system, joystick controllers, and i'm guessing 10 or so mixed games...

    Good Video!!!

  • Give me about 2 more years and game stops around the world will be in a shortage of Ps2 games why, I am going to be the third generation collector meaning, Ps2, xbox and game cube games, right now the game stop I live near has around 500+ Ps2 games at about 5 to 15 bucks a pot so I will start buying the hole lot of them :3

  • That was brilliant thanks.

  • man were is the warlords thats a four player game and i recommend that game to all atari lovers it was amazing, now its a top 12 list

  • think about this: why is pitfall so many ppls fav atari game? only because it has great graphics. pitfall is a good game, but its not the best. the best game most sertanly is not pitfall. its too easy and not that fun. lots of games are better.

  • Im going to get an Atari 2600 soon =]

  • no dude go for the atari 7800

  • I dont want a 7800, i may get one at a later date but i want a 2600 right now.

  • old school games are way better than nowadays games, cuz most of them have good visuals, but gooF gameplay, the old games were the opposite - bad grpahics (but neat for their time) and awesome gameplay

  • I loved looking through those catalogs. Wow back then such simple things made me happy. I guess it is true in some respects today, but nothing like being a kid and playing Atari.

  • "Well. they've been a little slow lately."

    LMAO

  • yeah that was funny XD

  • Mark pwnz G4

  • @xvegeta13 Coming up, it's Adam Sessler and Morgan Web!

  • E.T isnt the worst game ever think about it just think about it you find stuff and dodge poeple

its not fun but most atari games aren't

  • SUPERMAN 64 is the worst game ever

  • @clinch44 No, Action 52 is.

  • @clinch44 no halo is

  • @clinch44 Well, think about it: Xialin Showdown on the PS2 is THE worst game ever. Here are 8 reasons why...

    1. You cannot die

    2. Your partners do all the work for you

3 loosely based off the cartoon

4 compare it to ET, and Firefly

5 Is Elliot going to collect any pieces of the phone for you

6 Are those weird Atari rejects in Firefly going to commit suicide for you

7 At least Superman 64 has something for you to do

8 Xialin Showdown gives the PS2 a HORRIBLE reputation

  • @clinch44 EEEEEEE TTTTTTTTTTT

  • @clinch44 E.T. nearly killed video gaming single handedly

  • @clinch44 no et is

  • My favorite games were Boulder Dash, Great Cross Country American Road Race, Pole Position, and some other Activision flying game. Not to mentioin Karate, Ninja, Zorro, and Bruce Lee. Nonehtess, I'd rather get my hands on on a 65XE or 130XE computers, I much prefer the mid 80's styling, as opposed to wooden cabinets of the 70's. (Same goes for synthesizers. I prefer a DX7 to the Minimoog). Anyway, it would take me life time, and I still wouldn't be able to program even one of those games...

  • I'd have to go along with everyone else - Warlords was the epitome of multiplayer games for a long time. It's still very fun to play. I'd recommend that WAY over Air-Sea Battle and Indy 500.

  • a list of games that LIVE IN THE PARELEL UNIVERSE of shitty games.

    jr. pac man

    H.E.R.O.

    pitfall 1 and 2

    berzerk

    mario bros.

    kaboom!

    stampede

    circus atari

  • pitfall is my favourite atari game

  • same here, I hate that if your young people say "Oh you cant appreciate atari"

I personally like Atari. unlike everyone else I know,Genesis was my first system back in '01. got atari a little later. so really, graphics have NEVER mattered to me. Its 360 I cant stand.

  • Awesome! I'm only 13, but my first system was a Genesis in 2002! I love Genesis and always will.

  • Mark! Indy 500 and Air-Sea Battle suck balls. The others are pretty good. I'd recommend Pitfall 1 and 2 and Solaris.

  • A completely awesome stack of games!

  • The Atari Wizard knows all. He can see into your VERY SOUL.

  • 3:42 Berserk! Woo!

  • Pitfall, Enduro, Ms Pacman, River Raid

    Shouldn't miss those ones!

  • Comment removed

  • when i bought my atari 2600 it came in a big ass box and the guy said " nobody buys ataris so just fill the fucking box with games" when i was done i bought an atari 4 controllers and like 40 games

  • "Look at how happy these kids are...playing Atari...with their dog."

  • Although I personally don't like Atari games, I respect Atari for what they have done back then and their place in history of gaming. I love learning more about Atari and their old games.

  • Lovin the smooth jazz music. Kinda reminds of the music that was played on when the Preview Guide Channel was around.

    Thanks for the memories.

  • Do you even remember when the 2600 came out? The 2600 came out in 1977 and the NES came out in 1983 in Japan, that's a freaking 6 year diff. In 6 years tech changes so much. On an Atari cartridge you had to have something repetitive because they didn't have space to put a story of some sort. Point being is that tech moves extremely fast.

  • you are the dumbest 3 year old that i have ever seen, and to top it off you probably voted for George Bush

  • i didnt know i was playing with the brest system when i was a kid must of been plaing with kelly kelly lol tpo font attack me i was just makeing a joke

  • Oh, your hilarious ineptitude amuses me greatly. Please continue in a similar manner, internet jester-man!

  • yeah, iam a nut job..oh well..lifes too short to be so serious...eat some big fat pussey lips hahahah

  • Wonderful! Countless thanks for the delightful encore, my good man. Take a tuppence for your trouble.

  • thanx ...well aim gunna drink some beers now alone..cause my neighbors think there too good to drink with me,,fuck them..there all married and miserable,,i dont want to hear about there bills, and nagging wives,,so peace out!!!

  • I agree. Stuff is bad and such.

  • Hahahaha...reality.

  • That's exactly how I feel.

  • famicom was what came out in japan bro

    nes came out in '85

  • nobody's comparing atari to nintendo

thats just comparing apples to oranges!

  • fuck off

  • River Raid should be in any Atari 2600 top ten. Of course it only came out in 1982, and was an ActiVision game, so it wouldn't have been in that catalog

  • You can also play every 2600 game on the the free Stella emulator and the game roms are free to download on various rom sites.

  • back in the day the Atari 2600 was awsome.

  • I used to love Video Pinball + Golf.

  • Atari really needs to get their act together, I haven't seen a new game for the atari 2600 in a few months. I mean the last game was ACTIONAUTS in 2008 and how long did it take for that to come out What's the deal atari?

    (Is joking here)
