  • have not seen this vid,. before but really good view and tribute to Canadian pilots who flew Spits in Battle of Britain ww2

-also who flew for Bomber Command, -very brave and courageous men with

great humour, BUT fighting strength-lest we forget

  • I guarantee every British man over the age of 40 will know that sound.

  • Brings a tear to the eye.

  • That's a nice tight display!

  • Can't wait to see this plane june 20th at hamilton war musuem

  • sweeeet sweeeet merlin sound! i wish they never invented the jet engine ;)

  • agreed100%

  • 3:13 is AWESOME

  • hurricane was a tank buster with its four 20mm cannons, it would have done poorly in a dogfight as it was a wood/canvas frame.

  • Dude, the Hurricane took out more German fighters in the Battle of Britain than the Spitfire.. so not really.

  • everything i've read attributes the spitfire for winning the battle of britain (that and radar). but don't get me wrong, I think the hurricaine is a great fighter. Fast, agile, and lots of stopping power. It just dosn't have the rate of fire and number of rounds nessisary to be a good dog-fighter.

  • "It just dosn't have the rate of fire and number of rounds nessisary to be a good dog-fighter. "

The Mk Ia Hurricane (the ones used in the Battle of Britain) had the same guns as the Spitfire (8 .303 MGs)

The real tank busting Hurricane was the Mk IId which had 2 40mm cannons and 4 .303 MGs

The one with 4 20mm cannons was the Mk IIc and while that was used as ground attack it was also used as an interceptor

  • think your alittle lost ..the hurc had thicker wings which could take bigger cal guns and ammo but lost speed and lift due to drag and weight. Where the spitfire was once used as a speed plane before the war called the type m 300 it was made for speed first...then had everything else added hurrie was a lumberjack with a big axe and the spitfire was a tango dancer with a craving knife lol both great planes

  • Hurricane wasnt fast.....318 mph top speed for the MK1

  • The Hurricane had metal wing construction. Not wood. The fuselage was steel tubing construction covered with doped fabric. Canvas is not used as an aircraft covering. The Spit may be prettier and faster but the Hurricane was the work horse of the Battle of Britain inflicting 60% of German casualties. The Spit gets most of the credit for what the Hurricane did. I will agree that the Spit is a better fighter but the Hurricane took out more bombers.

  • carpcrew2006, some of your facts are correct, but you fail to realise that the Hurricane outnumbered the Spit almost three to 1, hence more kills, the Spit got the difficult job of taking on the 109's and the Hurri the lumbering bombers. Both aircraft won the Battle, as did radar and a host of other factors.

  • i love the sound of teh engine what is it a v12???

  • wrong hurricain won the war it had more kiss and the aircrft with more kiss wins the spit just got all the glory and thats a proven point

  • Yeah, you might want to think about WHY the Spitfire got all the glory. It fucking earned it, little boy.

  • Whats this Mustang talk,a Spitfire and a good pilot was superior to any fighter during the 2nd world war

  • You all got it wrong!!! The Spitfire came first and did a tremendous job fighting off the Nazi's. The P-51 only emerged after the road had already been paved by the Spitfire. Not the either one in my opinion is the better of the aircraft. When it comes to these fighting machines only the pilot makes the real difference. The Mustang is only the Spitfire polished up, cleaned up with updated technology for the time! Apples and Oranges Lads.

  • a big thanks to the yanks for turning up late in WW2 (and WW1) to help out, and screwing the UK to PAY for the machinery we needed to save the free world.

  • The p51 was made FOR the RAF by north american so if it were not for our intervention it would never have existed, as great a plane as it was. also the early p51 just wouldnt work at high altitude because of the allison engine, it was only when they puth the RR merlin (thats right, british) into it did it become the fighter that we know and love today. the spitfire could out turn out run and out gun the p51 (tho admittedly not by much) but was in most respects a better aircraft. Spitfire=legend

  • i just love the sound of that engine!!!!!!!

  • Think on Cousin American) this plane (and the Hurricane) "saved our ass"!! not yourselves! (despite popular culture and your history and the cursed PC!) I love your culture as an Englishman, but please stop trying to hijack my culture to tell my children that you saved my Country! you did'nt!! this is not intended as an insult or a slur to your great Nation, the RAF and the Royal Navy,"saved our ass" but don't put this MY Nation down at the expense of your own PC!

  • The P-51 Mustang even with the Allison engine out performed the Spitfire. The P-51 only improved when it was fitted with the Packard build Merlin engine. Donaldson R. Berlin build some P-40 Warhawks with Turbocharged Allison engines that out performed the Spitfires and the BF-109's. Regardless of these facts, the Spitfire was a supreme fighter in its day. I love to watch them fly just as much as Mustangs, Warhawks, Hurricanes, 109s, Zeros, etc.

  • This plane is a star, a beauty of a machine,

graceful, fast climb like a monkey om steroids.

  • rolls royce and frank whittle beat willy messerschmitt and, kurt tank hands down in the second world war air war

  • The spit was far more superior to the mustang. It has more fire power with 8 machine guns and twin 20mm cannon were the P-51 only had 4 50cal machine guns. the last versions of the spitfire the mk's 22-24 with the dome canopy was armed with 4 50mm exploding cannon. yes the mustang had better range of distance but the spit was the ultimate fighter and the mustang will never have a legacy quite like the spits.

  • you wrote that Mk 24 and 22 had 4x 50mm cannons i think that your statement is an outright fabrication 50mm is 5cm and it is almost 2 inches. 0ne burst from it would cause spit stop in air or push it backwards or tear wings apart wings would have been extremely strong to take such push and so quite heavy. P.S.late mustangs had 6x 0,5 inch machineguns

  • Operational Miles: Spit 437 vs P-51 1,650.

    Service Ceiling: Spit 35,000 vs P-51 41,900

Speed: Spit 378 mph vs P-51 437 mph

Armament: Spit 8 American Browning 303's vs

    P-51 six American Browning .50cals

    Bomb Load: Spit 500lbs vs P-51 2,000

As a fighter, the Spit was wonderful. As fighter that was much more versatile it goes the the Mustang which the British Purchasing Committee wanted to replace the Spit. In essence it is a very "British" fighter.

  • the spit and lanc won the european air war.the mustang without a merlin would have been a toothless tiger

  • This Plane is soo Beautiful!

  • a couple of weeks ago 2 spitfires done a couple of passes over my house near r.a.f bentley priory stanmore n.london the sound was fucking awesome, my kiddies loved it and so did i we could here em coming miles away .

  • I share your thought too, Nothing like the sound of Merlins

  • tally-ho!

  • troof is de spitfire mk9 woz or summink near it de best fiter of ww2-me grampy floo wun from kenley.

  • But yes over all 1939-1941 most Bf 109 A/B/C + .Were able to out dive spitfires and Some Tempest Do to the Neg,"G's" that had a affect on the Spitfires carburettor. In March 1941, a metal diaphragm with a hole in it was fitted across the float chambers. Fixing the dive shutter on the carb. blades, Wing tips, flaps, Eng/supercharges were also improved

  • Careful Careful...Documented top speed dive record of a Spitfire XI was chosen to take part in these trials. Due to the high altitudes necessary for these dives, a fully feathering Rotol propeller was fitted to prevent overspeeding. It was during these trials that EN409, flown by Squadron Leader J. R. Tobin, reached 606 mph (975 km/h)(Mach 0.891) in a 45-degree dive. In April 1944 Unlike the topspeed of the 109 that was 589 mph

  • i love ww2 planes and the Spitfire had its flaws but it gives me goose bumps everytime i hear one. And my children look up to the sky in awe everytime one flys past

  • The spitfire was one of the most revolutionary designs of the 20th Century, capable of modification throughout its life but it certainly wasn't responsible for ending WW2. It got the glory in the Battle of Britain but the Hawker Hurricane shot down two thirds of enemy aircraft in the battle. Comparison with the Mustang is a little misleading as the Spitfire was designed for defence rather than bomber escort.

  • The spit was also very versatile, it could carry mixed MG + Cannon, bombs, rockets, and even modified to carry a torpedo. It was fast, well armored, and very very deadly. Many versions of it were made, and was used in the RAF until the late 40s. It's regarded as perhaps the best fighter of WW2, but also looks and sounds damn sexy :P

  • im sorry to say it...but any person wo thinks messerchmits or kitty hawks or tomahawks are better

you are wrong, the british spitfire practicly endeed the 2nd war,the german, japanese and italian and others feared the spitfire because it treted enemy planes like they were easy sitting targets, like flying pieces of meat.Spitfire owns WWII

  • Ended the 2nd war? It was many different fighters that teamed up to end the War. If Messerchmits were so crappy, why were there so many German aces with som many kills? They were quite good aviators and had to fight everyday.

  • i guess your right...but the spitfire was a pretty awesome reinforement plane wasnt it...yet again reinforcement or not it still kciked the enemys planes arse like hell

  • I do agree. The Spitfire in its element was a fighter to be reckoned with. The Brits did design one of the best liquid cooled engines. Daimler Benz also made a nice one.

  • the reason the german aces had so many kills is simple. france begium an holland were mostley biplanes for a while the luftwaffa looked good until they met the spitfire and hurricane, look in the history books ( the ones with real facts and not fiction) you will see the class of kill were mostley biplanes.

  • France, Belgium, and Holland?. You missed the point. The longer you fight, normally you get better with your craft. You also failed to mention Russia, England, U.S. and Spain. Now get back to your books.

  • Nobody went to war with Spain. They had a civil war, thats about it.

  • Right! And German pilots didn't learn how to hone their flying skills in Spanish War from 1936 through 1939. They were referred to as the Condor Legion.

  • rubbish Messerserchmits were 1 of the best fighters of WW2! it could beat ANY allied fighter in a dive and i not just sayin that cos i like 109's i prefere spitfires

  • Hello!! any fighter in a dive? Try outdiving the P-47, then get back to me on your report.

  • all right then MOST allied fighters in the dive and the only reason a P-47 could outdive the 109 cos it was heavier than the 109. the 109 had a gravity powered fuel line.

  • damm i love that sound!!!!!!!

  • Yeah great plane, probably the greatest pure fighter plane of ww2, in spite of an engine that had a floatless carburetor instead of fuel injection. I'm an American, and although i do think the mustang was possibly the best all around attack aircraft of that conflict, I would rather take my chances in a spit.

  • the p-51 was a not a good plane until it got a brit engine in it and it still wasnt that good

  • Hello!!! Try taking the Spit over the English Channel for Bomber support or attacking enemy land positions. It didn't have the legs to fight. Endurance is a key part of any fight. The Mustang did a much better job overall with an American made Packard engine designed by the Brits.

  • get your fact strait the p-51 had a merlan engine in it it was crap untill it got it and the spit is still better in itlay the p-51 was getting owned by an itlan plane beacuse it couldent turne fast enufe the spit on the othere hand could easly beat the italan plane beacuse it could turne faster

  • Don't cry. Can you help us out with using "spell-check" when you type? Your English is terrible. What are you trying to say?

  • in fact the mustang engine was a rolls royce merlin made under licence from rolls royce. ( 27 litre supercharged with koffman starter)

  • I think it was referred to as a Rolls Royce Merlin Packard. Packard the Car Company ended up producing vast quantities enough to help equip RAF planes.

  • The Spitfire was taken over the channel for bomber support & strafing which included B25's & B17's to Belgium and France before the Mustang showed up. Spitfires PR XI & XIX had a range of 2000 miles which took them to Berlin & back, even the yanks used them at Mount Farm Oxford for PR work, not bad for an aircraft designed as a short range interceptor in 1936 long before the Mustang was thought of.

  • And in quite a short period of time the American Packard company was making some Merlins for Spitfires. Then came along the Mustang that was designed and built in 178 days. Not bad for an airplane that became one of the best fighters in the World.

  • I think you mean 117 days

  • It rolled out in 117 days, and first flew on October 26, 1940 = 178 days from signed contract.

  • 4 years & 8 months after the Spitfire. Designers can learn a lot in that timeframe, almost as long as WWII.

  • The Mustang wasnt a scratch on the Spitfire.

  • ?????? Sorry I don't know how you are using the term "sratch" in your sentence. If you mean it didn't measure up to the Spitfire, then you need to do your homework.

  • Silly American, it clearly says scratch and the term 'not a scratch on...' or in this case it is past tense, means that it isnt as good as or isnt up to date with. Plus the Spitfire or the Hurricane were probably the best planes of the war since the Americans came in so late.

  • What a profound statement!!. Lets talk about your beloved Neville Chamberlin? He sure helped you stay out of the War. Best two fighters of the war? Again I have to bring up the fact that the British Commission came to the silly Americans for a new plane. MUSTANG!!

    Ha ha ha.

  • Initially powered by the Merlin! ie the Spitty power house! where was the Mustang at a pivotal moment of WW11? The Battle for Britain? yes we came to the US and we paid for the privilige too!

  • The Mustang was originally powered by the crappy General Motors Allison Engine. What timeline do you put for the "pivotal" moment of World War2?. And yes, the Spitty was also powered by American built Rolls Royce Merlin Packards!

  • It doesnt matter, us as two great Allies both produced great and beutiful aircraft that won us the war us British defeated the nazis in the battle of Britain with our Spitfire and you guys in the day light bombing campain with ur Mustang :)

  • ahh yes the mustang the first aeroplane ever to have missles armed on it...what about the aeroplane that had checkered spots on thw wings,i heard that one was said to be brutal to...they say its heavily armoured and armed?

  • the P-47 was as brutal as they came it looked slow but had a top speed of 460 MPH and was also incredibly agile they wouldn't have givin it the nick name the "juggarnaut" if it wasn't but the spit was an awesome plane any plane that could take on ME-109's get my respect

  • the firt aeroplane to carry rockets (missles )was the hawker typhoon around 1942 I think.

  • Ahhh the sound of freedom, theres almost nothing like the sound of a merlin being given the berries, what an aircraft is there a better combination than the Spitfire and Rolls Royce Merlin engine???

  • you are so right pal the spit was so adaptable it could carry bombs rockets photo reconassince defence attack all round a super aeroplane. it won the freedom

    and saved our necks.

  • Hawker Typhoo, Spitfire, and Seafury were some of the best ever produced.

  • Don't forget the Mosquito :D

  • yeah mebbe but dont forget the Hurricanes, defiants, blenheims and gladiators which flew and fought in the summer of 1940

  • Defiants, Blenheims, and Gladiators? We are talking about really good airplanes. Hurricane was a good machine.

  • spitfire triumph bonneville jag e type....sure is possible to fall in love with a machine particularly if it is british

  • oh yes

  • There can be no more stirring a sound for a British man than the throaty 'Grrr' of the Spitfire! The RR Merlins always sounded like they had more to give if needed! Great video. Kids of 12 can distinguish this unique aircraft even today. A living testament to the designers and brave pilots to whom we owe our freedom.

  • And this particular woman as well, Moribundian! :D

I grew up near Eastleigh (now Southampton) Airport in the 70's, and Spitfires used to often fly over. I fell in love with them! That sound as it goes past gives you goosebumps!

  • British design at it's best, and there is no mistaking the Merlin engine sound, awesome!. This plane will never be fogotten.

  • is this a restored original or a replica spit? looks awesome. nice vid :>

  • Yes, real deal Spit, A real pleasure to watch with Mr. Romain or Mr. Walker at the controls

  • Love Messerschmitts more!

  • kwl

  • is this in the US or UK?

  • It was in Canada ( Niagra region, Ontario )
