  • I'm american and I think British comedy is better than american comedy.

  • @Killer27586 As do I.

  • @Link504 awesome

  • @Killer27586 I disagree there, I just find American comedy a bit better. However I do make a huge exception with Monty because he is funny as hell.

  • @sonbrodersen they are as funny as hell. they, not he.

  • @sonbrodersen We can trust your opinion on comedy because you clearly know what you're talking about, as you know Monty Python is a "he".

  • 76 are simply pining for the fjords

  • 4,353 people have beautiful plumage.

  • wkuk

  • 76 people have a dead parrot.

  • 76 people didn't get on with it

  • wouldn't it have bbeen awesome if after 1:09 the shopkeeper said "well that'll kill it"

  • why is it always that ppl have to paint the obvious observations on everything thats posted on you tube .its insulting to assume that ppl on here are not that savvy enough to figure out what exactly is being exponded upon here?

  • @nukecat is that a pun?

  • Hold 9 and see a crazy twat with a moustache looking at you

  • @FridayFace To me the parrot sketch is based on the same principle, except one party (Michael Palin's shopkeeper) knows what is being communicated and is deliberately trying to befuddle the customer. But we could debate this forever. I think we agree that the four candles/fork handles sketch hinges on wordplay and the dead parrot surrealism. I think your point of view is perfectly valid, I just think mine and other people who enjoy this sketch's are too.

  • The palindrome of "Bolton" would be "Notlob"!

  • Damn, missed the frontal nudity :L

  • "pauullllyy!!!" xD

  • @twilightfan3601 It's 'Polly' mate :)

  • it was the parrot wat done it

  • I fail to see why this sketch is so revered...

That's it, I'm going to make a complaint!

  • It's a case of the emperor's new clothes. There is nothing funny about this. Nothing.

  • @FridayFace That's because you don't understand how revolutionary this was when it came out in 1969.

  • @krazymop With respect, that's quite a presumption, isn't it? How do you know what I and do not understand about the revolutionary nature (or otherwise) of Monty Python? I agree, I don't get the humour. I have never thought that MP was funny. From my perspective (and all appreciation of humour is from A perspective) I've always thought of MP as pretty conservative, public-schoolboy (in the UK sense) japery. But that's fine... We don't have to be the same as each other, or like the same things.

  • @FridayFace You are of course entitled to your opinion, as humor is subjective. But I dare say it wouldn't be a stretch to say the majority of the people who watch this sketch find it funny. Seems rather odd then to proclaim everyone to be wrong in as bold a fashion as you did, especially given the subjective nature of the subject.

  • @krazymop Hi Krazy, Looking back over my comments, I don't think I have written (let alone 'proclaimed'!), that "everyone [is] wrong." I'm very happy to be in a minority in this case, and to express my view nevertheless.

  • @FridayFace Fair enough. I would just add in the future the phrase "in my opinion" prior to making such a bold statement.

  • @FridayFace What do you find funny?

  • @MrHeslopian Well, if I was going to talk in an abstract sense I'd say material that is witty, intelligent, etc, because that would reflect well on me. But sometimes I like puerile drivel because I like to laugh at poo and farts. I like the thrill of a punchline that suddenly turns my understanding on its head, and sometimes I like the most predictable puns that you can see coming a mile off. I just don't find the parrot sketch even slightly funny.

  • @FridayFace The parrot sketch hinges on a very simple idea which the actors build on. That's the only way I can describe it. Two characters want different things, one is sensible, the other a dunce. It's what comprises most sketches, such as the The Two Ronnies' four candles bit, except whereas that was built around wordplay this is more surreal. I guess that's where the problem is. This sketch simply isn't to your taste, which is fine, but doesn't make it a case of the Emperor's new clothes.

  • @MrHeslopian Fork handles: now you are talking! What makes that very very very funny is the exasperation of failed communication based, for each object requested, on two perfectly legitimate interpretations of the same utterance, giving rise to a suspicion on the part of the shopkeeper that the punter must (surely!) be "avin a larf". What makes the parrot sketch to me unfunny (and I think an example of the emperor's new clothes) is, yes, the surrealism. But there you go. You gotta laugh.

  • @FridayFace

I, for one, find this hiliarious. I like jokes that are witty. But that's just me.

  • is there such thing as a cleesedrome?

  • lmfao

the palindrome of bolton outld be notlob not ipswich hahahaha

    lol :)

  • An absolute classic!!

  • Its resting.lovely plumage!

  • @beggin1967

The plumage "don't enter into it!"

    "It's a pun" "It's NOT a pun"

"No, no, not a pun...what's that thing where a word is spelled the same [back and forth]?"

    "A Palindrome?"

    "yeah, that's it,a palindrome."

"It's not a palindrome. [Bolton said backwards] would be Notlob!"

I don't understand why other sites cut this entire part out of the sketch. For me, though the string of euphemisms for death ARE funny, I find the whole "palindrome" thing to be one of the best parts of the sketch!
