@456japan Thank you - shot about 50 interviews with sharpies from Thomastown to Frankston to Paddington NSW - working on the longer version now shouldn't be long now ...
@RebeccaMcLean123 hmmm... Conte cardigans... I just don't know about that one! They did have those woeful clod-hopper shoes though. (then again, our ripple soled desert boots, brothel-creepers etc. weren't the funkiest footwear either!)
It started in Melbourne and it was unique to Melbourne. The interstate Sharpie thing only really got bigger later on but from what I have been told by various ex-Sharpies the Melbourne scene was quite unique in and of itself.
The only Sharpie crew from Syndey I had heard of came from Laperouse.... I'm sure there would have been others though.
@bovverboots86 Well, that's just not true, as I grew up in inner-city Sydney The Blue Mountains and the coutryside in the '70s and there were Sharpies pretty much everywhere I lived.
They were the bane of my existence for much of my youth to be honest. My friends and I drifted between ska boys and mods, and the sharpies were always giving us grief.
The bulk of Sharpies seemed to be in the Western suburbs, but we came across a few around the beaches in The Shire too.

Why do Victorians think this only happened in Melbourne?
We had Sharpies all over Sydney too.

A longer doco is coming out soon - which includes late 60's and interstate Sharps! But let's face it - did the Blacktown Sharps wear Conte cardigans?
