damn i wish i could touch the rim that easy im 5'5 i got to jump 34.5 inches to touch the rim my standing vert is 31 running 35 its from squats and deadlifts and cleans
Thanks kingfish. Also, one thing I've noticed from weight training, jump training, and stretching is that all the muscles in the P-Chain are connected. If my hamstrings are tight they are gonna pull on my lower back muscles. This is why stretching is so important.
Everyone is 'p-chain dominant' jumper. In fact, those muscles are the bulk of your power. Your vert is gonna suck, whether it'd be squats or deadlifts.
hmm... since I started weight training this year I haven't increased my VJ a lot... I thought it was going to be a lot more. I had a 29 inch SVJ without any training and last time I tried I had 30inch(5'9'' touched the rim). This last month I've been training hard like at my 100% lifting nearly my max and I see I'm jumping higher. I haven't tested yet. So I realize If you train hard and explosively you'll get results.
It does, but not instantly. He's sore because he was lifting consistently and his body didn't recover yet. So I'd say he's jumping on reserve leg power, rather than maximum. After he rests completely, I think his vertical will be a lot higher than before he started.
Exactly, I know from experience, it usually takes two weeks for me to fully recover from squats and deadlifts. But the benefits after the rest period are enormous.
ok, cool. Key is recovery. I began strength training legs 2 weeks ago. This week i did 4x10 of 160lbs squats and some other excersizes. gonna be adding 10 lbs ea week. im 5'10" and weigh 160 lbs. Im supposed work up to squat 1.5 or 2x my weight right? im gonna add in some plyo and sprinting.
Good goals man. I'd say at least twice your body weight, coupled with explosiveness from like power cleans and plyos. Everyone is different, but I would workout intensely for about a month or so, then rest for a couple weeks to see the improvement. No matter how hard you train, you won't get anywhere without resting. Breaking down the muscles during those intense workouts will need the rest to build them back up to be stronger.
i found the best way to measure a standing vertical leap is by using the top of your head as the measuring point. simply measure how tall you are and see how high your head can touch and measure the difference. this eliminates the reach of the arm that can add false inches to your leap.
lol.. but i can't really jump high with a very weakened back. also, i tested my pre-workout jump the same way. arm swing removed to focus on pure leg drive.
@Dragon

What is p-chain?
MrPatchesOhoulihan 1 year ago
@MrPatchesOhoulihan
posterior chain. spinal erectors, glutes, hamstrings.. anything on the posterior (back) side of the legs.

I have touched the rim of a basketball hoop by jumping and I am only five foot six. Only problem is it is not consistant yet.

so your saying the squats and deadlifts to increase strength dont help for the VJ?

NO
your vertical jump goes up as your squat numbers go up (while keeping bodyweight constant).
my standing jump gets lower after a period of heavy squats because of muscle soreness, which goes away after a deload

i agree, recovery is very important. would you say increasing the weight 10 lbs ea week is irealistic?
zevahc87 3 years ago
It is, but I'd think you should go with however your body recovers.
Check your messages bro, I sent you some information. It's too much to type here.

kingfish405 3 years ago
you need to find out what your standing reach is.
i have a 92" reach. the rim is 120". 120-92 = 28" needed for the tip of my finger to touch the rim.
kingfish405 3 years ago
Hey Kingfish, you for sure have over a 30! No arm swing in that, being sore. Wait a week & film again. BTW, NICE GYM you lucky shit.

You could have gotten much higher if you actually decided to jump, you didn't even swing your arms. Be the first one to post a 30on TVS
