  • I really like this song - and the video!!

  • It's not easy... Letting go of my black dog... :S

nice metaphor... oh why can't she love me back now... :(

  • this isnt the original ,Led Zeppelin was the first band to make that song and you need to delete this video cause you dont know what your talking about.

  • @McdaMahon

    You are wrong...

This isn't meant to be a cover of Led Zeppelin.

This is an original by Kris Rowley.

  • I love the picture of the dude playing the guitar left handed flipped upsidedown. Left handed guitars aren't always that easy to come by.

  • You deserve to go far, Kris. The song and the video is beautiful.

  • hey dude remember after we recorded this song you did all that acid then made that downs syndrome chick take her clothes off then you inserted that broking tv antenna inside her colon and punched her in the eye saying that should fix her

  • Finally someone who combines good lyrics with good music. Music today is on a downward shift, reverting back to the fortys and fiftys and some cases finding the eightys.horrible. this guy is good

  • Absolutely beautiful song, I gather the dog is a metaphor for something in his life? What makes this song all the more poignant, is the wonderful sketch art in the video.

  • This song is so powerful.

Why do Kris' songs make me cry?

    Something with the minor chords....

  • Cognitiveguerilla i know what you mean.. im lucky enough to have grown up with him.. he's a good guy.. could be a knob sometime but who isnt.. he's an amazing musician just ask to hear the song he wrote about his father and you'll hear real beauty

  • @cognitiveguerilla cause your a cry baby ha ha

  • looks like jeffery dahmer

  • Ha!

  • What a great combo of pictures and music, works so well together.

  • It was a great honor to work with Kris. Thank you! ~Jon

  • Again a great work. Perfect video!

    - MMM

  • Life is one massive song and dance, made from wave frequency, when it reaches a certain range we call it sound, but when we open our minds, we hear the music that plays all the time, the music that the soul understands, the songs of Kris makes me open my mind.

    enLIGHTenLOVE friends :)

  • I totally agree, but what of those who aren't musically inclined, with zero interest?

  • Does that include deaf people?

Find me a person that doesn't like music. I suppose there are people who don't like music but there are a very few of them and are very hard to pick out.

Deaf people aren't musically inclined but I think that they very much would like to listen to music, the notion of zero interest does not apply to them. But who am I to know what deaf people are like? I only make assumptions.

  • I would say that the Deaf have their own way of understanding music. One of my favorite hobbies is Sign Language and I once had the privilege to attend a Deaf church and one of the best things there was watching the song leader.

The difference between music and sound is an emotional one. The right movements of the hands and the passion in someone's eyes is just as musical as someone with a guitar and a nice voice.

And there are some very musically inclined Deaf people in the world.

  • you are a presumptuous cock.

  • Die in a hole will you

  • The dog deserved to be tied on a tree and left to die alone... He was disturbing the person... But in real life, the guy couldn't do that, or when he did, it feel less happy in his home...

  • The dog is a metaphor, dude.

  • I was just kidding, lol...

  • Okay, so... is this guy a title ripper? Red Sky at Night is a song from David Gilmour... Black Dog is a wellknown song from Led Zeppelin. etc. Faded Into Light is taken, Good Bye is taken big time too...

  • There's a such thing as coincidences.

  • Well is there a coincidence that this guy's titles are almost all taken by great artists? But still... This is a good song...

  • Led Zeppelin didn't invent the concept of the black dog, and this song bears absolutely no resemblance to theirs.

  • I'm not talking about the song, talking about the title...

  • Like I said already, there's a such thing as coincidences. Like some other people have said, a black dog has been used as a metaphor for depression. And furthermore, do you know how common black dogs are? Chances are, more than one person will name a song after something the same thing, but that doesn't make that person a title ripper.

  • That was really neat !

I'm glad the dog isn't real...

  • Thank you Darian. Kris is really an inspiration. Thanks for mentioning "Restitution", too!

  • Sad Dangerous Potential Unrealised Takes a Dog to Lead Him Dog is happy Man is not Dog has more to live for than Man But Dog depends on Man Man gives nothing back - but sadness Man ties up Dog - makes Dog sadder Man dwells on himself FAR TO MUCH Man needs a LIFE The Black Dog has one!!! Man has not
  • I wrote a song called Little Black Dog a long time ago. I'm sure you know that's what Churchill called his depression. Again, great stuff.

  • Great as always!

  • excellent video and your music is always great to hear! loved this song.. you are so very talented!

  • wow!i do love your songs !talented!

  • Hey Kris Happy New Year! :D I really like the illustrations that Jon did. It always fun to see what others see in our work. YOU of course I can't say more than BRAVO again! It is wonderful to see you expanding with your music. Sorry it took my ages to get here. I hope all is well with you and you Dad. BIG HUG ~Meg

  • A Kris Rowley tune is ALWAYS a treat to find here, huh? Thanks!

  • nice song mate, however, I do not like the dog being tied to the tree and left, this sets a very bad example. Although, having previously thought he was going to hang it I suppose I should be grateful. A dog is for life, not just for Christmas or 'Original Song' animations.

  • Don't worry, the dog is only a metaphor; he's not real! Even in the video, he only exists in the man's mind.

  • The whole piece is wonderful. The music, the artwork, the direction. Great work!

    Love it....still.......

  • Thank you Joe!

  • Amazing!!!! Great video! FANTASTIC song!

  • Definitely among the very highest quality entertainment I've seen on youtube. Thanks so much! Like most, I took the dog at face value, not as a symbol, but after reading the explanation I watched again and enjoyed it even more. Bravo!

  • What a wonderful compliment, thank you! I'm glad you were able to get two unique experiences out of the same video, too. ~Jon

  • Glad you enjoyed, bardsrback

Jon's visuals really are more than I ever expected

  • Kaiser is too adorable! Naw, he can only lead you to the light... or the dog park.

Thank you for your most gracious seal of approval! ~Jon

  • You two guys are so awesome, I can't stand it!!! I had a comment I was going to leave when I first saw this but I guess I forgot to post it in my excitement to share this. It was basically that I do think you two shall meet in person one day. Hope I'm there too! :D

Much Love Kris and Jon!!! This is some high quality s*** right here!

  • Thanks Dave. I hope you are right. I'd love to sit and jam with Kris one day (and perhaps take tea with the Queen while I'm at it!).

    Thanks for the stars! ~Jon

  • The funny thing about that is, I could see you actually having tea with the Queen and Sir Kris Rowley or at least being invited when he gets knighted :D

  • As long she doesn't mind me taking coffee over tea, I'm there! ;-)

  • Inspirational.

    Love it

  • Thanks :-)

  • Really enjoyed the feeling of this song. I'm glad I randomly clicked on it while browsing through Leesha's favs. It reminds me of that old joke somehow, "My dogma got run over by my karma."

  • Haha.. not heard that one, noliketoregister

    Glad you enjoyed

    Isn't Jon just great?

  • Brilliantly and insightfully done. Fine tune and vid. Great job! I think Leesha below summed it up perfectly.

  • Simply amazing song and art!!! Thanks for sharing!

  • This video is EXCELLENT! I can relate to depression hanging around in my life to the point it nearly destroyed me. It took me awhile to figure it all out, but now that I understand better, leaving the dog tied to the tree was the best thing he could have done for himself. Bravo, my friend! 5 Stars, plus some! Great job!

  • Thanks Crisco, and thanks for favoriting it, too! ~Jon

  • Thanks many times over, mingofalls

    Glad you enjoyed

  • I'm back again for more! Okay - I admit it; I'm hopelessly clueless - why DID he leave Black Dog behind? I gots to know!

    cheers

  • Here's my take on the video:

The black dog is like depression or melancholy... it hangs around for years, influencing every aspect of life. It's there, unexplained, every morning, and it taints relationships and other things in life that used to bring joy. Notice how the dog leads the man to the rope and the man gets a pained look on his face... then the dog has the rope by the tree... is the man contemplating suicide? Possibly, but in the end, he ties up the dog and walks away.

  • Leesha! You could nor be more correct in your interpretation! Thank you for guiding some of the other commentators through the narrative of the video. I thought it was obvious, but I can understand now how some might have misunderstood the metaphor. Kris's words literally sang to me the plight of our hero and the struggle he endures. I Googled "Black Dog" after recieveing his lyrics and discovered Churchhill's dark demon. (cont.)

  • (cont.) I saw how aptly this metaphor could apply to so many others who suffer as he did. I allowed a sort of sympathetic empathy for the Black Dog to emerge at the end because, even though depression is a debilitating condition, it can be VERY difficult to come out from under it, even when you are clear and free thinking. The lifestyle of the depressed is just that- a lifestyle. It isn't easy to turn your back on years of conditioned living. (still more!)

  • It isn't without its rewards, though. Much great art, music, and invention might never have come to light without the isolation and concentration that depression can bring. Still, I would go back in time to offer Van Gogh lithium to thwart his demons, even if it meant the world would never know of his Starry Night or Sunflowers. His peaceful, happy life would have been consolation enough.

Thank you so much Leesha for your understanding and praise. You are a true artist and friend! ~Jon

  • You nailed it, Girl!

  • i contemplated this but then... why does the dog have to be so beautiful and cute?!!!! hehehe! (depression is not man's best friend!?) anyway, i still absolutely love this video and the message. jon, you are a super talent. oh and you too kris! as always! loved it loved it loved it.

  • I wonder if maybe the dog looks so cute and lovable because depression does become like an "old friend"-- it's reliable in its consistency in showing its face every morning. You get used to it and learn to live with it and may even fall back on it as some sort of comfort... it's hard to explain, but as frustrating as depression can be, it does become familiar and "safe." It can be an ugly monster at times, certainly, but I find more often than not, it's a subtle creature. :)

  • This is so true Leesha. A rut is a rut. Whether it's paved in gold, or mired in mud, a rut can become a comfort zone if ignored. You are a very insightful person. ~Jon

  • I think you hit the nail on the head with this one Leesha!

  • Well, even Satan is described as an Angel of Light. When bad things masquerade as good, it makes the evil even moreso. Thank you Alley!

  • Cheers, alleycat82

The answers are in there, but, true, the dog is rather lovable looking.. hmmm

    Peace

  • My apologies to Jon and Kris if I'm wrong... and I don't mean to taint other viewers' perspective before they get a chance to contemplate the metaphor for themselves. I just wanted to give you my interpretation and why it was so powerful for me. :) Cheers!

  • ***** and faved, so I can watch it over and over!

  • Amazing, amazing job. Kris and Jon, your talents know no bound, and we're so fortunate to enjoy the synergy of your talents in this video!

I'm reading some of the other comments, and many seem to think the video has a sad ending... no way! It ends with hope! That black dog (metaphorical for something else folks!) hung around for too long. When I saw the rope and the tree, I started crying (all too familiar a consideration), and when he tied up that dog and walked away, I cried tears of joy!

  • Bravo, Leesha. Thank you so much. ~Jon

  • nice song and absolutely BEAUTIFUL film clip. made me want to cry when he tied the black dog to a tree though? obviously i need to spend more time on that metaphor!

  • Hi Jess. Please don't cry! Look at Leesha's comment below and you will find it is a happy ending! Thank you. ~Jon

  • Did he not like the dog or something? Poor dog, just abandoning it. :( Gd song tho.

  • Hi. Please see Leesha Harvey's comment further down and you will see the intent of the narrative. Thanks. ~Jon

  • verry tastfull ^_^

  • really nice kris,is it a new song.???..pete

  • Cheers RAWRAMP1..

New-old if you catch my drift

It's been floating around for a while

    Peace

  • that had a lot of emotion in it. great stuff man. and the drawings really drove it home.

  • With a Kris Rowley song, the inspiration comes easy. Isn't he amazing? Thanks. ~Jon

  • Most definitely

Jon's narrative is one which overlaps in part with my own but is original all the same. Genius!

  • This is really beautiful. Thanks, Julie, for pointing me this way.

  • Thanks so much, LiteGauge

  • very cool. great performance, great poetry, cool video.

  • Wow....great!

  • Thanks a lot, jessemy

  • this is wonderful!! well done zap and kudos to the artist - reminds me of drake's 'black eyed dog' and churchill's description of depression as a black dog - one of my favourites of yours for sure!

  • Thanks Joe.

  • Great video great song, but how sad.

  • On the contrary... Read Leesha Harvey's comment further down. It is a hopeful ending!

    Thanks. ~Jon

  • brilliant

  • Reminds me of a story...

"My grandmother used to tell that we all have two dogs living inside us: a good white dog and an evil black dog. The one that grows is the one that you feed the most."

  • I remember hearing that proverb ages ago, too. It really is a truism, huh?

    Thanks!

  • beautiful! thanks bunilvr for sharing!

  • very nice

  • Bravo! You are both headed for greatness! Now this is the true meaning of friendship; in every way! This is so magical - I LOVE it!

Tons of stars to you both!

    cheers

  • Kris is such a fine, decent fellow. he greatest payoff in this collab is getting to know him even better! Thank you.

  • For my own part, thank you many times over, buniluvr

    Jon's a star

    Peace

  • Wonderful project, proves once again that a group is more than merely the sum of its individuals.

  • What a nice compliment, but I think the math goes like this:

    Kris = 90%

    Jon = 10%

I was simply honored to be included in this project! Thanks.

  • I second that notion, funkwurm

    Thanks for the support

    Peace

  • great video, great song, keep it up kris :)

  • Thanks a lot, Linerideroxs

    Will certainly do my best

    Peace

  • pure greatness

  • You are too kind, calebhawk07

    Glad you enjoyed

    Peace

  • Once again you've brightened my day with your wonderful music. I like the more folksy tone at the end of the song, it was great to hear you sing in that sort of style. The video was amazing as well. The ambiguity of what the main character meant to do with the rope was really clever. I really enjoyed this!!!

    Thanks Kris!

  • Pleasure, electricbubbles

Props to Jon and his artwork

    Peace

  • Great song Kris!! Love the drawings also..Did you sketch all of them? Looking forward to the description but from the vid, the ending was pretty sad. 5*

    Gersing

  • Hi Gersing. No, the sketches are by my good friend Jon, aka flyinghorseknuckles. Check description for details.

    Peace
