So, some sort of border needs to be agreed upon, even if some don't like it, and Israel and the Palestinians need to abide by that decision.

Had we not almost arrived at a two state solution? Certainly that is part of the answer. For battle to begin, someone must fire the first shot and for batlte to end, someone must stop shooting rockets. Then we can talk.

But peace does not mean watching more and more settlements being erected on their land. Bear in mind that Israel claims to be a democracy...

Europe's sense of guilt over the Holocaust has sufficiently diminished that they no longer turn a blind eye to the excesses of the Israeli state. There are fewer and fewer states prepared to turn a blind eye if the terrorist attacks stop. If other democracies emerge in the Middle East, this will also increase presure on Israel.

@bloodandwinearered It seems easier for a democracy to stop the illegal settlements, as a gesture of good-will, than the semi-functioning authorities in Gaza and the West Bank to stop militiamen firing rockets. Problem is, even if the settlements are all dismantled, the Israeli state is still based on an illegal act. so there will always be some Palestinians (and Muslims in the wider world) who reject Israel's right to exist even. But whilst settlements continue...

It's there and in the absence of some sort of cataclysm, it isn't going to go anywhere. Human beings, and populations, are remarkably forgiving, given enough time, after whatever wrongs which they suffer cease. So, some sort of border needs to be agreed upon, even if some don't like it, and Israel and the Palestinians need to abide by that decision.

Israel will have to be seen to play fair if it is to get the majority of Palestinians on-side, as it is the Palestinians that will need to resist the calls from these external players. The US will need to be play fair and independently from the Israeli lobby too.
