Dont be ignorant! You wouldn't buy a BMW and then bitch about having to buy only Premium Fuel because it costs to much... The P22 is a high-end plinker, so dont get pissed when you have to buy high-end munitions. I have owned many P22's over the years and if you fire good amo through it (which you should do with any gun) if works like a champ, never misses a beat... HATE CHEAP ASSES!!!!!
I have three of them and they all work great unless you are not nice to them. :-) If you put the magazine in fast and hard I have trouble most the time. But if you take it slow and easy it works great. Mine have even been good with cheap ammo.
Hello, maybe you can help, I took my P22 out to the range for the 1st time after buy'n it and after @ 50-100 rounds the striker {firing pin} broke. How, Where and cost {if you know } would it be to fix? Can I or should fix myself or let a dealer do it? thanks, Scotty
@equitium I can't speak for the P22, but my P99 9mm has been flawless. After running - 2500 rounds thru it (Tula, Federal, UMC, WWB, Speer Lawman & Gold dot, Blazer) I've had zero malfunctions, ever, even while intentionally limp wristing. I think Walther is a quality firearms maker. Too bad Umarex markets the P22 under the Walther name.
The P22 is certainly my worst gun experience. Actually it is my only poor gun experience. I had nothing but problems and was happy to sell it, didn't even own the thing 6 months. The slide release was junk and would cause malfunctions, the hammer would seize the slide, failure to feeds, failure to eject. A friend of mine got a PPS and I witnessed it have nothing but problems. I think I am going to stay away from Walther for awhile..
I have the newer P22 Q model, and it's almost 100% reliable. In fact, I've never had a malfunction, but my wife's had a few (I suspect she was limp-wristing).
Maybe Walther has resolved some of the issues? But yes, I agree that if I were to go to the store today, I'd much rather have a Ruger SR22. I just love Rugers and their reliability.
Now that it's properly broken in, my little Walther will fire cheap ammo all day long. I've even taken a few trips to the range without cleaning it, just to see if it would jam up. I didn't have a failure, but all the crud in the gun started to smoke a bit so I finally broke down and cleaned it. By this point all the moving parts of the gun were making crunching sounds from all the grit left by the dirty 22 ammo. It's an awesome little gun.
I'm going to have to disagree with you on the Walther. Mine is a superbly reliable little lead launcher which required absolutely no custom work. The trick is just to break it in properly. Yes, that will include running a few hundred rounds of CCI MiniMags. Sure they are pricey, but it's not like you're buying 44 magnum ammo. Make sure you clean it very thoroughly, and scrub the feed ramp well. Lubricate it well and work the slide back and forth (With the gun unloaded) while you sit and watch TV
My walther has never had problems.browing buck marks are ugly bulky you look like u belong on starwars when u pull one of them out...waltherp22 is a great gun! I think u got ripped off by the guy who sold it to ya.the only thing walther will jam on is federal brand ammo.but federal sucks in bout any gun and it dirtys yer gun quick..good reveiew for a walther hater....walther #1
Good vid, I too was thinking why buy a 350$ 22 cal gun that's gonna cause issues when you can get a better one for less money. Glad to hear that the Walther P22 can be modded to fix the problem though even if it costs more money but still is expensive IMO for a 22 cal hand gun.
I very much enjoyed your discussion. Please keep it up. If you're looking for material, just present a different gun smith type of activity each week. Take a customer's gun each week and do a showcase on the work you did. Example. Polishing, fitting, sanding down the rails, etc on the P22. You spent 8 hours working on this pistol. Would have been cool to walk us through the process.
Yeah my gun has similar cycle problems using Federal ammo, I have already had to round the trigger bar due to its damaging of the slide and I removed the magazine safety springs as it was impeding double action. I am going to test polishing and maybe rounding the hammer to try and get better cycling. Would you advise any certain tool to shave the hammer down?
It seems that the P22's are hit and miss. Mine cycles perfectly with everything except subsonics. And with subsonics, I get one jam every magazine. I know people that have a lot of issues with theirs. So it's up in the air. But I agree, it is unacceptable.
I have a P22 and have over 400 rds of cci mini mags through it and it cycled 100% no problems at all.If u can afford to pay 400.00 for a pistol u can afford to pay 7.00 for 100 rds of mini mags.as for 22 ammo cci mini mags is all I use.I don't waste my money on that cheap bulk crap
lol can't believe I found someone who had to do the same thing as me. It cost me about 500 bucks for an armorer to fix the gun. Although while being raged about the issues I had managed to find out Walther knew about this and instead of recalling the gun manufacturer defects they just fixed the problems and started making them again. Apparently lots of guns were released who experienced this problem.
i must say i did like this video but i guess i really lucked out on my Walther P22, i bought mine brand new about 3 weeks ago for $300 and i have been able to run the Remmington Bulk Ammo, as well as the CCI's, Winchester Super X with about 3 FTF incidents, all of the problems have been with the Remmington golden HP's. but other than that it has function outstanding with over 600+ rounds through this gun. I'm talking about doing rapid fire, etc.
I'm sorry but in my opinion I think you shouldn't be shooting at all if you cant afford an $8.00 ammo which I think is not really that bad at all. No pun intended. I'm just saying..
I admit the only ammo I've ran through my P22 is Federal and Remington(and I am no gunsmith), and over the course of well over 2,000 rounds the only time it has ever given me trouble(beyond the odd .22 misfire)is when it got absolutely FILTHY.
I have heard consistently negative things about the Colt 22lr M4 carbines, the Sig Mosquito 22lr, and the Walther P22. The one thing they all have in common is that they are are all made by the German company Umarex, but sold under another the known name brands.
Smith and Wesson is doing the same deal with the new M&P 22, also from Umarex. It does bother me that all these companies are basically banking on their good names while selling products that are known to be inferior.
The SIG Mosquito also has issues cycling most ammunition. SIG claims that is was designed around the CCI MiniMag as well, and it does tend to do better with it than with the bulk type ammo, spoken from experience.
sounds like you got an out of spec used one... try a brand new one out of the box and dont assume used shit is a valid example of factory new. I doubt the guy wanted to unload it because he just felt like it... every manufacturer has lemons.
@M733 No sir, when I got my hands on it, it was in barely fired condition. My guess is that the original owner bought it on a whim, shot it a couple of times, saw it had issues, and decided to offload it on some other unsuspecting person. That person (the customer/friend I bought it from) knew I was looking for a cheap suppressor host, so he sold it to me on the cheap. As far as it being a lemon, I doubt it. The P22 is pretty well-known as being a less-than-stellar gun.
of course its going ot have issues, its an airsoft converted to fire .22lr, walther closed down after WW2, the name is owned by umarex, its an airsoft company.
I've heard good things about the P22 when compared to the Sig Mosquito. Agreed, you shouldn't have to run CCI through that gun. The fact that customer service even offers that as a solution is borderline offensive. I'd throw a fit and send it back to Walther/S&W.
Honestly, they both have issues. There are many better (and less expensive) options out there for a plinking handgun. If you're looking for a .22 to use as suppressor host, a MKIII with a threaded barrel, a 22/45 with a threaded barrel, a Buckmark with a threaded barrel, and several others work much better than the P22.
That said, I didn't pay a whole lot for this gun, and since it's only purpose in life is to demonstrate suppressors, it'll work just fine.
