I'd like to join the little quasi-debate here. "They" could mean the record industry, corporate enterprise, human nature, people in general. I personally prefer specific lyrics, but RDC's emotional message always comes through strong. Artists like to say - "the song is about whatever it means to you" which tells me they should just go be politicians... because when you really like an artist, you want to know what the song means to THEM.

As is the case with many great songs, RDC has set it up to mean something different to different people. I'm sure the roots of her lyrics have a profound meaning to her, but she has left the door open enough for the rest of us to relate this song to our own particular thoughts on who "They" are. I agree with SenorCrushMan. The poetic genius of ReinaDelCid masterfully offers up lyrics that can be interpreted in a number of different ways. Who "they" are can apply to many different groups or entities. In fact "they" could apply to dishonest & unscrupulous everyday people. Balboa515's list of who "they" could be includes the record industry. I was surprised to learn that one of my favorite songs, "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" by Traffic was evidently about the record industry.

It has such a hypnotic hold on most listeners. I always liked it a lot even though I never knew the true meaning of its lyrics.
