Mine takes two hours to get running. I wouldn't care but it takes 40W bulb so leaving it on all the time isn't cheap. But it;s nice anyway.

according to everything I have read about lava lamps, including from the manufacturer is that every lava lamp "has its own personality" so there is no way to change it, short of trying a totally different lava lamp
